The Mindset Keeping Latinos From Building Wealth

Louis Barajas argues the Latino wealth gap stems not from lack of financial knowledge but from inherited trauma and scarcity mindsets that sabotage wealth building even when people learn to invest. He says political solutions won't fix it; what's needed is personal healing and new systems to break the cycle.

Hey guys, this was going to be a tough one to hear. Now, when I started my firm in 1990 in Boyle Heights, people said Latino poverty was because we didn't have access to financial literacy. There were no books, there were no internet, very little resources. Most Latinos were unbanked. That was 1990. It's 2026. There are thousands of books now, podcasts, YouTube channels, free courses, TikToks, and the wealth gap among Latinos continues to grow. So let's stop pretending that this is just about information. It's not financial literacy. It's financial mindset. It's financial trauma. It's growing up hearing that money's hard, people like us don't get ahead, rich people are corrupt, investing is gambling, debt is normal. It's watching your parents struggle. It's instability. It's fear. It's survival mode. But here's the hard truth. You can learn everything about investing and still sabotage yourself. I've seen it hundreds of times, if not thousands. You can build wealth and unconsciously bring yourself back down because struggle feels familiar. No spreadsheet's going to fix that. That's mindset work. And let me say something else: the political system right now isn't going to save minorities. Arguing all day about it won't grow your net worth. If we wait for perfect policies, we're going to wait forever. We have to take this into our own hands, not because it's fair, but because it's necessary. The revolution isn't more information. It's healing our relationship with money. It's building systems that protect us from our own self-sabotage. It's deciding that trauma stops with us. You don't need more motivation. You need a new identity. You need the identity of a wealth builder, an asset owner, a cycle breaker. Please follow me and click the link in my bio because we want you to become part of the Latino Economic Revolution. We're going to do this together, guys.
