CBD and Your Health Conditions | Women to Women Podcast with Marcelle Pick ft. Dr. Hyla Cass

A YouTube interview (Women to Women podcast) where Marcelle Pick interviews Dr. Hyla Cass about CBD (cannabidiol). Dr. Cass explains the endocannabinoid system, how CBD can oppose the stress (fight-or-flight) response and interact with serotonin receptors, clinical/applicative uses (anxiety, depression, PTSD, PMS/menopause, pain, bone health, cardiovascular effects, pets), and practical guidance on product quality and dosing. The episode also includes product details (bottle strengths, dropper dose) and a listener discount code.

All right, welcome everyone to another podcast where we talk about everything. Hormone, adrenal trauma and weight for the Women to Women podcast series. And today I want to introduce you to someone that's going to give us some new information which I think is always important with regards to CBD and the impact it can have on our health overall. And many people are hearing about it now. But I think Dr. Hyla Kass is probably one of the experts in the field. So let me tell you a bit about her. She's known and I love this, I love this drug free psychiatrist for helping individuals overcome anxiety, depression and much more, all while using specific natural supplements including.
Hemp oil extracts and cbd.
And she's author of several popular books including Supplement yout Prescription, Natural Highs, Eight Weeks to Vibrant Health, one of the first that I read, and the Addicted Brain and How to Break Free. I would love to start digging into CBD and hormones. Where do we even begin? And how can we really teach people that there is relief that can come from cbd? A lot of people are worried. Well, I don't know about it, should I do it? And now you're here to help us understand that.
Right? And there's a lot of mystery around it because it kind of burst onto the scene and it seems to do so many things. It helps with sleep, anxiety, depression, pain, pms, menopausal symptoms, bone loss, you name it. It's like, wait just a minute, that's too much. It's probably placebo, but actually it isn't. I thought the same thing when I heard about it, so guilty. But what it is is CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid. The most, a well known one is thc, which gives the high of marijuana. So both cannabidiol and THC come from the cannabis plant. So they're both, they're both from the same plant. Except the hemp plant is bred to not have THC in it or to have a minimal amount of thc, which means it doesn't get you high, but it has many, many other medicinal properties. And the question is, well, how does it have so many medicinal properties? And, and that's because it is a major part of the endocannabinoid system. It interfaces with the endocannabinoid system which we have inside us. So you can take outside cannabinoids like THC or like cbd, those are phytocannabinoids, meaning from plant. But we have endocannabinoids that we actually make ourselves, such as anandamide which means bliss in Sanskrit. And 2 AG, we have our built in feel good chemicals.
What happens is this endocannabinoid system works throughout the entire body. The hormones, the gut, the brain, the immune system, really all the systems of the body, all the cells of the body are actually connected through this endocannabinoid system. And we didn't even know about it till the 90s. So it's kind of interesting, isn't it? I mean, just. Yeah. And then we didn't know about cbd, we knew about thc, we didn't know about CBD till more recently. So the situation is when our endocannabinoid system is working properly, we have a built in rest, restore, relax and heal part of ourselves which is so much needed these days.
Then the bad news is that we're under a lot of stress. When we're under a lot of stress and then having poor diet and a lot of other things, our endocannabinoid system kind of goes south and it's not working properly to help us rest, restore and heal. What to do? Along comes cbd, which is a phytocannabinoid that comes into the system, interfaces with the endocannabinoid system and helps it to work better, it shores it up. If you have an endocannabinoid deficiency and we can't really measure it, except we can tell by symptoms. When you have a deficiency and you actually take cbd, it'll raise your own endocannabinoid system and you can begin to restore yourself.
How does it connect with hormones? I mean, we think of all the hormones in the system. How does that relationship kind of connect together?
Well, let's begin with one system that we're all really familiar with, and that's the fight or flight stress response. I think that's an excellent way to look at hormones and the endocannabinoid system. So we have this fight or flight response in us, which is a good thing because when we were in the jungle running away from tigers, other predators, it was a good thing to be able to go into this so called fight or flight, which means.
All your energy goes into your perception, your muscles. You can run, you can breathe, your heart beats fast. It's all the survival. It's not even thing, you're not even thinking. It's total survival. So we need it. And when we were running away from predators, it was good. And when we finished running away from the predator, we kind of shook ourselves off and that was it. We didn't sit around thinking about it. So here we are, many, many thousands of years later with the same built in response. Except we're not running away from predators. It could be bills, deadlines, taxes, you name it, family, relationships, whatever is going on. We have this built in fight or flight response and we're not running. We're not dissipating those stress hormones. We're creating epinephrine and cortisol and these are what really start to cause problems.
It affects your other hormones.
Women under stress, for example, have worse pms, have worse menopausal symptoms, have trouble sleeping, some are more sensitive to pain. All of this happens with fight or flight, which is this built in mechanism. What we really want to do is stop it. We want to be able to curtail it and have it when we need it. If you're standing in the road and a car is suddenly barreling down on you, your fight or flight's going to take over and you're going to jump to the curb. It's good, it's a good thing. But having it running through us all the time, not so good.
No, go ahead.
No, how does CBD interact with what you're saying, which I love to give participants the understanding that there's something they can do about it. I about fight flight all the time in all the workshops and the programs that I have. But how does CBD in particular help with that?
It actually neutralizes, it opposes the fight or flight response. It works along with the parasympathetic nervous system. Fight or flight is the sympathetic nervous system. This is the parasympathetic nervous system, the calm, relax, sleep. And by taking the CBD, it actually enforces your own Anandamide and 2AG.
Those are the feel good chemicals.
This is so cool that the CBD receptors also interact with the serotonin receptors. And we know that serotonin gives us a good mood, it helps us to relax.
Really good for depression, good for overeating.
CBD actually acts on the 5ht1a receptor, which is a serotonin receptor. We have a built in feel good.
Just by taking cbd, it knows to go to the serotonin receptor. It knows to curtail some of that excessive cortisol and epinephrine. So it's just going in and smoothing things over.
Because that's its job. Yeah.
How exciting is that? So if somebody says they're listening to this and they're saying, oh my gosh, this is really something I want to try, how do they one, make sure that they're getting adequate product? How should they take it, how often should they take it? And where should they go to get it?
Oh, excellent questions.
Because it's all over the place. You know, you can get it at your gas station, various stores, online, and so on. You want to be able to have a certificate of analysis that indicates what's in it. You want it to be organically grown and you want it not to have any toxins in it, because hemp, it's from the hemp plant, and the hemp plant is a concentrator, which means that if it's grown in soil that has toxins in it, it's going to concentrate those toxins. By the way, Kale is also a concentrator. Absolutely. You really want to be careful. Even if it's organic.
You want to have a plant.
That is growing in absolutely organic soil that has not been exposed to toxins, pesticides and so on, because those are going to end up in your product and it'll show up in a certificate of analysis. So that's one thing. And then how to dose it, it's all over the place. It's really individual. I tell people, start with the lowest dose and take, say, a half a dropper of the lowest dose. I have a product that comes in 750mg, 1500mg and 3000mg in the entire bottle. For example, the 750mg is 25mg for each dropper. You start with a half a dropper. That'll be about 12 and a half. Put it under your tongue. It's good to take it with a fatty meal because that helps it to absorb much better. You put it under your tongue, let it absorb for 30 seconds, up to a minute, and then notice how you feel 10, 15 minutes later. If nothing, if there's no change, you have to have a target symptom. It has to be like pain or a headache or.
Anxiety. These are some of the things that yield really quickly or wanting to fall asleep. You take a half dropper. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, you take another half. And you just keep building up until you find the dose that really works for you. And that's your dose. And that may not be your dose all the time. It may change over time. The other thing is that if you're taking CBD all the time, after a while, your body may actually work better with it. It's not like you get used to it and then you have to take even more. It's the opposite is that you start to build up your own stores of endocannabinoid and you won't need it as much or as often. And then you save it for when you really need it.
And what about getting it at different stores? How do you, you know, if somebody can't get access to you or your product, how do they go about finding someplace that. I mean, just like everything now, there are many things that.
Yeah, you just went off camera for a minute. There are many things that we don't trust and we know from even supplements. You know, you and I have been using supplements for a long time, that there's companies that are unbelievably reputable and there are some that are not. So how do people. Hila. You know, navigate that world?
Well, that's why I actually developed my own, because I wanted. I wanted to know the purity and I actually wanted to determine the flavor and the texture. You know, I wanted it to be lighter because often it's kind of heavy and grassy and I don't like that taste. So I put it in MCT oil, which has its own healing effects, and then added some organic lemon oil or essential oil of lemon, and that gave it the. Just this lovely little lemon flavor. So that's why I developed my own. I can't vouch for. I know some are. Some brands are better than others. It may be you have to experiment or you look at the certificate of analysis online and see if it matches. Well, it's not going to be up there unless it's a good one. Right. People don't put bad certificates up.
I'll stand behind mine. And I don't know that I can stand behind the others because I'm not there. Got it.
What other things can I use it for? Anxiety, I use it for sleep. I use it for people that have their. In fight flight all the time and people that have PTSD. What are some of the NPMs? What are some of the other things that you see that it's really effective for?
Very interesting. It's excellent for ptsd. It actually works right on the limbic system. There's nothing like that because the medications do not work for ptsd.
We can use different, like tapping or emdr. So there are some techniques, but if you add in CBD while you're doing the techniques, you really get a leg up and the work goes much faster.
So excellent for post traumatic stress disorder.
Anything else? Anxiety, ptsd, pms, hormonal dysregulation, adrenal dysfunction.
Or anything else you can Let us menopausal symptoms. Bone loss. Is it really good for bone loss as well? Yeah. Why? I know it helps to. It stimulates bone growth.
Wow.
Yeah. And it has cardiac cardiovascular effects. It helps to regulate heart rate and blood pressure, just like an adaptogen in that sense. So again, it sounds like a panacea, but it just has influences on all the systems of the body. Amazing. Works with microbiome.
More about how to find you and more of the information that you've written about and all the amazing things that you've done in the past, how they go about doing that.
My website is drcast.com-r c-a s s.com and you'll see all the different forms that I have the CBD in.
Including capsules and including a pet product. It's been great for pets. Amazing. Wow.
That would make sense, though. Yeah. Your pets are going to pick up on you as well.
I've seen some really amazing results. There are dogs who tend to be lame and they have really bad pain in their legs and giving them pain medication is not really a good idea. It's not healthy. But CBD really helps them and they like it and it calms them down as well.
It's a good thing. Awesome. Awesome.
Well, thank you so much. This was very insightful for many people and I think it will really give them the opportunity to say, wait a minute, I don't like the thc.
I was scared about it.
I didn't want to do it for that reason. And now they've got another option for themselves for many of the things that we talked about, including depression, anxiety, which we see so much these days for sure. Right.
I just want to mention something about thc, and that is that there is full spectrum. And the full spectrum CBD has a trace of THC. It's less than 0.3%, but I kind of like it. The reason I like having that 0.3%, first of all, because it does add one more cannabinoid, even though it's a small amount. But also in not taking it out, you're also not having some collateral damage in terms of maybe inadvertently removing some of the other parts fractions, you have a more complete product. I also have a day and a night. So at no extra charge, we put in daytime terpenes, which are also medicinal, not just the cannabinoids, but there are terpenes that help during the day with focus and concentration. And in the evening, we have ones to help you to relax and to sleep. Fantastic.
Fabulous. Well, now people have all kinds of ideas and they know what to do to have more of a holistic kind of approach to these issues, struggling with.
And I'm giving a discount. I'm offering a discount to your listeners with the code Marcel10. Marcel10.
Okay.
There's a 10% discount. Awesome. Perfect.
All right, thanks, everybody. Take advantage of that.
All right.
Thanks so much, Hila. I appreciate it.
You're so welcome. What a pleasure.
