Stop Saying “Use a Travel Agent”: The Language That’s Killing Your Value

Marcie Muensterman, a travel advisor with 19 years of experience, argues that words like "use" and "free" in marketing devalue the profession and fuel burnout. She recommends swapping "use a travel agent" for "hire me" or "partner with me," and offers an audit to rewrite bios, emails, and websites to attract better clients.

Hey there, welcome to the No BS Travel Advisor. This is the solo edition, just me, Marcie Muensterman, my mouth, my mistakes, and the real stories from 19 years in this wild-ass industry. There will be no guests here, no censorship, no filters, just the truth behind how I burned out, rebuilt, and finally learned to run this business like the And if you're an independent advisor who suspects your host might suck, hates working for free, and appreciates a well-placed F-bomb, you're in the right damn place. So let's go. Hey y'all, welcome back to the No BS Travel Advisor Podcast. I am Marcie Muensterman. Oh my gosh, you guys, I got a little sunburnt over the weekend because my daughter had 4 softball games in her first full official tournament weekend as an ace, and it was a rough weekend. Tough weekend for the girls. We were in it, and we were right there with all the other teams, but we just could not pull off a win. And I just keep thinking about how hard it must be to be on a big stage like a softball field for hours on end losing. And it just broke my heart to see the girls come off defeated, literally defeated, with— on their face and their body language. And just how it must feel to let their team down, let themselves down, let their coach down and ultimately look at us and think that they're letting us down. And I just thought, you know, they are working so hard, but some of these teams just know how to dig deep. They know how to get the job done. And at first, that's what I thought today's podcast was going to kind of be about. And I think that there will come a time when I talk a little bit about that. Talked to Jude after the game, and what we really took away from it is no matter what we're doing, we are not defined by our mistakes. not defined by the errors we make on a softball field or even in everyday life. It doesn't destroy relationships unless you let it. And it doesn't destroy your own confidence unless you let it. And I think it's one of those things where that can definitely be something we can take into business as well, that we are not defined by very many things in our life, the true definition of what it means to be who we are. And I never want her to feel like her errors on the field equals not being good enough in real life. I also believe in specific types of language when we are talking about ourselves, when we are talking about the things we enjoy, when we are talking about the things that we are doing and how we show up. How we educate people on who we are is all in language. It's in actions, and it's in owning and taking accountability for those things. So if we say certain words, it will lead to how people perceive us and how we perceive ourselves. And that is what today is all about. We are going to talk about something that sounds kind of small in the big scheme of our travel businesses, but I assure you it is not small. It is the language we say, use, and give to our prospects, to our audience, in our marketing, in everything we're doing in our business. It's the messaging we send. I told Jude if she beats herself up and says that she sucks and that she's not good enough, that that language will alter her brain chemistry. If she allows that type of thinking and that type of belief and that type of language into her brain, It will literally change how she actually sees herself and how others will see her. So we have to shift the language. We have to shift the belief so that others understand fully who we are, even despite the errors we have made. Specifically today, I want to talk about the phrase, who's a travel agent? Who's a travel agent? Or, All travel agents are free. I'm free. Agents should be free. And before anyone thinks I am preaching, let's be clear. I am. I am very clear in how I want you to change your language. And this comes from a place of, I used to do this too. It was an error I made in my business. It was a message I was brainwashed to believe I needed to say. And then I believed it to be true as a value add to my clients, but ultimately it wasn't. I mean, even though I used to market myself this way, making the shift and getting away from saying, use me, I'm free, shifted not only my entire attitude around my business, but it shifted the audience's attitude around my business. That is why I stopped. And that is why I want you to stop. Saying it as well. I see you. I follow you on TikTok. I interact with your reels on IG. This phrase, use a travel agent, is everywhere. This idea that not only should you be used, but you are fucking free. Oh my gosh. Combined, you guys, it is just one thirsty-ass party on the internet. And it is getting so old to watch. It really is. It's giving desperate. And I'm going to be honest, prospects can feel that desperation. Through the computer, through the marketing. And often this marketing is paired with really tacky images of, I don't even know what, but I'm going to be real honest and tell you, it is not sending the message you hope. It is not educating the prospects in the way you really think it is. I posted about this in the Maximize Your Travel Advisor Facebook group on Monday, and Patty Says I saw a post over the weekend where some influencer suggested to save money using ChatGPT instead of a travel agent. She did not receive good responses from travel advisors on her post, or those who work with travel advisors. But she said the worst part of their comments were to defend themselves and say they are free. To use. And to make matters worse, someone came in and started bashing travel advisors who charge a fee. Sadly, so many travel advisors come into this industry encouraged to take any business they can get at any time for any destination and work for peanuts. We already know that, but it's getting worse in that there is so much misinformation being spread on social media. And let's be honest, Patty says, myself included, that's what I was taught. That's what I was told to do when I was new until a year ago when she found me, the No BS Travel Advisor, Marcie. It's time you all trusted why you are here, why you are following me, why you are listening to this podcast. You want to make real change, real difference in your lives and businesses. You want to change how you see yourself, be so fucking obsessed With your own awesome. And that means stop demeaning yourself with the words use and free. All right. So excited. Let's fucking go. First of all, this is not a charge your fee or else episode. Whether you charge a fee or not is completely up to you. That is a business decision you need to make for yourself. You have to see your time as valuable and decide If it's worth charging a fee for. Only you can ultimately decide that. This really isn't even a money episode. I really want you just to be thinking about the positioning of your business in the market. There are a lot of travel advisors out there, and it's an ever-growing, ever-changing, dynamic industry. And there is room for every kind of business model at the table. As long as we are running ethical businesses and treating each other with respect, the industry can elevate and change on pace without being structured in a way that we're tearing each other's business models completely down. Now, if there are people listening and you're like, yeah, but you tear business models down. Let's be real. I am talking about unethical business owners who treat their ICs like employees, which is against federal law. Okay. That is not the same thing as me saying we need to respect all business models. All business models have a place in our industry as long as they are following IRS policy and being respectful to one another. Ethical businesses have all my support. Doesn't matter what you niche in, as long as you are treating your ICs like ICs, I'm happy. I don't care. Even if you don't pay a lot, don't love that, but that's really none of my business. And if your advisors are happy, that's all that ultimately matters to me. But what some things have never changed in this industry is this idea that because we work for commission, everything else we do is free. Whenever you are saying the word free or use, the language is training your prospects Your current clients, the public, your friends and family, other advisors, all in how to see you and your business. And if you keep saying use me or I'm free, don't be surprised when people treat you like something disposable. That's the bottom line. You become disposable. I used to be a destination wedding specialist. I mean, technically I still am a destination wedding specialist, but I no longer participate in helping people plan destination Weddings. I have done over 230 weddings in a long career, and I always wanted to charge, but it just wasn't encouraged. When I say I did the majority of those weddings for free, I think I only ended up charging for like three weddings because I didn't start charging until 2021. I started this business in 2006, so that is a lot of work and a lot of time invested. In hopes that the payout was worth all the time invested. And it never, ever was. But it was my own fault because I positioned myself as a free travel agent. So it didn't matter how much time I spent on room blocks and securing dates and contract reviews and coordination and emotional labor and being a therapist, all of it. I had been told For, from day one that advisors don't charge. We are free. We get paid via commission. And it never occurred to me that the commission is a thank you for supporting a specific hotel line or resort. It was not payment for the endless amounts of work and hours I invested in these weddings. And I was told that even charging $50 would be bad for business. $50. Good agents don't charge. They said that saying you're free is better marketing. And in fact, saying you're free is just scarcity mindset. It really is. There is no abundance behind free. I mean, I did what I was supposed to do forever, but it led to my burnout. Being free, saying yes, led to the destruction of a well-built So I just want you to sit there with your coffee, with your wine, on your walk with your dog, and think about how it makes you feel when someone says they're free. Do you really think that that is a value add and that's such a competitive market? Genuinely, genuinely think about it. For me, once I really started to think about this, it just made me feel smaller. It made me feel like I wasn't worth anything. Didn't matter how much expertise I had. Didn't matter how many resorts I had visited. Didn't matter how many meetings I took with destination wedding coordinators on site. None of that mattered because I was free. So my education, my expertise, the time invested, the money invested into my business did not matter. That's really how it comes across. It's how I really started to think like, this is such bullshit. And that to me is The real reason, like we have to see ourselves first as the professional, as the expert, no matter if it's day 1 or day 1,000 in our business, because no one knows your business and what you have done to train and travel and be this version of yourself better than you. That's the other thing. You are unique. What you bring to this industry is unique. None of us are doing this business exactly the same, but no one tells you on your first day on the job that when you say you're free, you are only going to be attracting people who value free. That's the bottom line. We've all been in that situation. I about died when I read this comment, but it is so true to me right now. Christina Baker said, my daddy said, when we, when he hears folks say, use me over and over and over again, it Just makes them sound like a Dollar Tree prostitute. Oh my God! Oof da! I was like, whoo! That like made my skin like it made me clutch my pearls. I about spit out my coffee this morning when I heard that. But hey, if the shoe fucking fits. When you say use me, you attract people who will use you. They will pick your brain to death. They will tire kick. They will ghost. They will ask a bazillion questions and never ever. Ever book the vacation with you. They will come back to you over and over and over again and never finalize a reservation because you keep letting them use you. You keep quoting them for free in the DMs. You keep shopping that same cruise over and over to see if it's a better deal than Expedia or Costco or cruise.com or wherever the fuck they're shopping around or comparing the pricing with. They're not partnering with you. They just want the best deal. And because you say you're usable, they're coming to use you. They do not respect your boundaries. They do not see you as strategic support. They are using you and you are allowing it. And just like you, I didn't realize this at first either. I could tell you a ton of stories about the many, many leads I got that I worked and worked and worked, and they never ever closed. And I really genuinely believed it's because they took advantage of me being free and me being usable. And therefore I became disposable to them. A lot of advisors don't realize what the general public does not know about advising. And that's that we absolutely do not get paid until you secure a reservation and actually go on that vacation. Those 2 things have to happen. Well, there's a lot of other things that have to happen, but you know what I mean? A deposit, a final payment. A traveling client, and then we wait thirty, forty-five, sixty days until we're actually paid. So during that time, you're working for free, and a lot of consumers don't realize this. So as much as I don't want you to talk about commission, I do think educating on how much we do prior to someone actually traveling, and then the care they receive by a full-service travel advisor is so different than what Costco, Expedia. Discount, you know websites are offering to the consumer. So that's why it's really important to shift the language because I didn't realize when I was telling people to use me and that I'm free that that meant more endless shopping and quoting for them. More comparison behavior was attracted to me. More ghosting and just non-response. Like back when I started travel agent being being a travel agent, ghosting was not a word. It was just they didn't respond. What am I supposed to? to do. They're still not responding. And I don't know when ghosting kind of came out, but I'm sure it was within the dating realm, right? You started getting ghosted by your dates or online or whatever, Match.com chats, I don't know. But I didn't use that terminology back then. It was just like, this fucking client never responds. Like, they don't get back to me. They just totally like left me on read. And back then we didn't even have left on read. It also led to more quick questions— quick questions, quote unquote— that weren't quick. It led to more emotional energy than financial return. I was working for pennies, especially at such a bullshit commission split, 70/30. It was ridiculous that I was still at a 70/30 after years and millions of dollars in travel sales. And I had trained them to see me this way. I had taught everyone around me that I was free and that you could use me. So even my friends and family would pick my brain and never ever realize how that actually affected me. Okay. It really did contribute to my burnout in ways I cannot ever get that time back. It just feels so desperate at the time, even though I was a good salesperson and could close a lot of deals, there was still so much unpaid labor and unappreciated labor because of the terms I was using to describe my business. This was on me. I never looked closer at how I was marketing myself. I never took a beat, a pause, and thought, why do people treat me like this? That's the hard part though. It's not them. It's you. It is you. I believe in taking responsibility and accountability for every decision I have ever made in my business now. I didn't always think this. I blamed my host. I blamed my clients. I blamed my friends and family for not getting it. But ultimately, like I have said in many episodes, all of this, how far I have come, how far you can go, has to come from within. It's the mirror work. It is standing in front of the mirror saying, how do I make changes that will deeply affect my business for the positive? How do I dig deep to stop feeling like a fucking loser? How do we move forward? And position ourselves the way we truly want to be seen. How do we do that? It is as simple as saying, hire me instead, partner with me instead. After all, we don't use a lawn care service or a housekeeper. We don't use a roofer. We don't use a financial advisor, lawyer, CPA. We hire them. And just because you don't necessarily charge a fee for the service doesn't make you more usable. And one of the things that has always stuck out to me was my conversation with one of my business besties, Farren. She was on the podcast in the first season and she said, I am not a Kleenex. No one is using me. And it has stuck with me in ways I didn't know it would. It really has. It just was one of those core memories from our conversations and from the time in coaching. When she really started to shift her mindset. And it was one of those aha moments for me when I heard her say it. And I think it was an aha moment for many of you if you've listened to that episode. Not only are we not Kleenexes, we are so much more valuable. We are not snot-filled stuff like that you just throw the fuck away. I am not a Kleenex, damn it. No one is using me. I really love that visual. Of like a prospect blowing their nose all over me and then just being like, I got what I needed out of this and throwing it in the trash. That is absolutely not how I want to be seen as a travel advisor. I know it's how you do not want to be seen. And I know as a whole industry, this is not how we want our business relationships to be seen. Who's makes you interchangeable. Replaceable, disposable. It signals that any agent will do, any online website will do, whoever's cheapest will fucking do, whoever responds the fastest might do. I don't even know because even responding quickly didn't pay off in the end for me. I want you to realize you are not interchangeable. You have experience, judgment, business relationships that you're developing. You have risk awareness, intuitive service skills. Problem-solving, outside-the-box ideas. You have high emotional intelligence from all your experiences prior to being a travel advisor. You are also you, and what you bring to this table is so unique and unreplaceable that only you can provide certain experiences to your prospects and clients. But only, all of this is only true if you actually believe it and you share it. Through educational content marketing, emails, ideas, how you handle the DMs, all of it. You have to shift how you're handling those things, how you're spreading awareness of who you are in this industry. If you stop saying use in your content, stop saying it on your website, stop saying it in your email responses, DMs, Reels, Calendly, shift to hire or partner with. And see what happens. This small change in your language will make worlds of difference in how the entire audience around you will see you. Not just prospects, but your friends and family, your fellow colleagues, me, since I stalk you online. It really will change your business and who you attract, and you will be able to take ownership of this awesome vibe that you can put out in the world. If you choose to continue to market yourself as a generic option, you will continue to dilute all of your amazing, all of the things that make you truly unique at what you provide as services to your prospects and clients. What makes you special in your niche, this industry, and what you have to offer Can stand out, but only if you are willing to make one of these small changes. This costs you nothing to change. So even if you don't charge a planning fee, you're not quite ready, you don't think you're worth it, whatever it is, you are not free. Yes, you can say that you provide a complimentary service because you are compensated through supplier partnerships. Yes, you're paid via commission, but guys, you still carry so much liability, so much responsibility to provide an experience. That people will want to repeat and refer. You train, you travel, you know things others do not about your niche. None of that was free to obtain and learn because that was your time, your effort, your energy, and so much money out of your business bank account. So why do you keep saying you's free? Be honest with me. Be honest with yourself. When you say I'm free, clients don't hear your compensation structure, they're never going to understand it. And I don't believe in explaining it, but I do believe in understanding value. And when they hear, I'm free, use me, that time no longer has value. That language creates bargain behavior thinking that you're willing to do anything to get this sale, that you may even offer big discounts, OBCs, whatever. In addition to being free. What the fuck is going on with that? Cannot stand it. Like, it is like so thirsty to me that you are still using this language. You are literally attracting people to you and training your friends and family who may or may not, because we all know they're the hardest ones to get to refer us, but for those who support us to talk about us like we talk about ourselves. And if we say we're free and then they start perpetuating free, it spreads like wildfire through the industry, which is exactly what has happened over the last 30 years. And that's also why people say, aren't travel agents dead? Is that even a real job? Is that even a thing anymore? No one needs a travel agent. They see zero value in the services we provide because of the messaging this industry has Shared with the public for decades. Let's be real, you are literally equating yourself to the free little bites and tastings at Costco that you will never ever fucking purchase. Like, sometimes people just go there for lunch and don't buy anything because they're encouraged to do so. So this desperate, thirsty-ass language, oh my gosh, it's just so fucking outdated, old. Completely unrelatable to how we actually should be seeing ourselves because it just says so much more than no cost or complimentary. It says you are not worth treating yourself with respect. And I just want to make a quick shift into how this industry has evolved, especially since the COVID years. In reporting with Host Agency Reviews, nearly half of hosted advisors report charging fees. Independent advisors that have no host are even higher percentages, and Asta is still claiming 72 to 75% of advisors are charging a fee of some kind. Now, this could be a research and consulting fee. This could be a cancellation fee, but they are charging. So the idea that only good agents are free is completely fucking 2011. But again, this episode is not about whether you charge. It is about the fact that there are advisors charging. And it's the language they have shifted because they are no longer free. They had to shift their language and they are still successful. And even in many times more financially stable and successful sooner and faster than advisors who choose not to charge. So if you continue to position yourself as free, it is unlikely, unlikely going to mean success faster, especially financial Success, but you can still not charge and position yourself as a professional, someone who respects their own time, energy, and expertise. Even if you're new, you are doing the fucking work. You are taking all the trainings. You are getting on the webinars. You're listening to the podcast. You're investing in courses. You're considering hiring a coach. See, you don't use a coach. You hire one. And in Maximize, the comments were just commenting. I was loving it. Brooke Millward said, 100% yes. To stop saying free and use. I switched how I communicated to my clients and potential clients last year, and it makes my business sound way more professional and legitimate. Also, I know it's working because in my client reviews on social media posts, my clients are now saying in that same language, we may never plan our own trips again. We hired Brooke and seriously had the best time with zero worries. We definitely recommend hiring her for your next vacation. That like brain explosion emoji needs to be on my screen right now because it's so simple, but it has essentially trained her clients on how to speak about her services. It has elevated her business into a different structure that goes against everything we've ever been taught or heard about this industry from day fucking one. It's going to shift how future potential clients see her business. She says it has eliminated tire kicker friends, people who know her, who supposedly love her, that are only interested in having her quote a quick trip and a zillion different things and pick her brain. She says it elevated my business to show others that it's a paid professional service, just like paying your hairdresser or any other service. So the words you choose. To use for your business really do define your service and attract more aligned clientele. Such a small change that she made with an oversized business impact. First of all, I just fucking love this for her. I loved reading this. I loved seeing that that shift also gave her confidence to charge a fee. So once you start changing your verbiage, you may feel more empowered and confident to move to the next level and include charging some kind of fee. But guys, you need to own and be so fucking obsessed with yourselves and believe that you are a hot commodity. When you are obsessed with how you speak about yourself, that energy is palpable. It is attractive. It is going to bring the right aligned client to you. I want you to really be your own best friend here. I also want you to consider calling out bullshit language when you see it. And I don't mean like up in their comments being rude. I mean, just making small suggestions and tweaks to your colleagues' posts could really help them elevate. We have to take ownership of the entire industry sometimes. And especially if you know somebody that keeps doing this, gently make a recommendation to shift the language or send them this podcast. That could be a really fun, easy way to get the word out on me, but to also help them. Without being in their face. I'll be in their face for you. But we do need to start holding each other accountable for that poor usage of free and use. It's really time to shift our entire industry. And I need help on this hill, damn it. Like, I feel so alone in so many of the things I talk about when I know I'm saying what you're thinking. I know I'm sharing things that you want to share. I know I talk about things that you wish someone had told you before. So do us all a favor and share the love of this podcast with your audience, with your friends, with your colleagues, with your, you know, with your host companies. We don't have to fight it out in the comments though. We are professionals. We could just have gentle conversations with one another. And I just really think that it's all about retraining us. Unwinding the brainwashing. I truly believe though, it has to start with us, like ourselves, and set that example in our content, in how we communicate. We're all watching each other. We're all paying attention and owning it. When new advisors say, hey, come use me, I'm free. If you are a mentor, if you are somebody that really takes that role seriously, a quick, hey there, I have one quick change I would love to see in your marketing. Let's shift that language to hire me instead of use a travel agent. That's it. We don't have to all go in full lecture mode, right? But we can help each other realize what a little thing that is that can have such a large impact. And I just think, gosh, it is time to own this. And if we are willing to stop saying this, then we really are elevating the entire industry as a whole. We are standing side by side in it. Hire me. Partner with me, work with me. This just is an energy shift too. It just also just brainwashes us in a good, positive way. And when I started doing this, it changed how I showed up and it then changed who showed up for me. One of the ways I moved into a 6-figure earner yearly income without working a bajillion hours is when I started to attract super aligned clients who valued me. Even before I charged, it changed how consults felt too. It felt more empowering and I felt more confident in the delivery if I knew they were going to hire me. And ultimately that just made me see myself in a different way. And that's what I want you to feel, just so excited to show up for this job every day and be hired by aligned clients. Words don't just train clients. They don't train friends and family. They don't train your audience. They train you. They literally— words shift brain chemistry. When you call yourself free long enough, you actually believe you should not be asking for more. And in fact, on a call a few weeks ago that I had with some smart moms who are no longer with that company, they said, I just feel like I can't say it. I can't charge. I can't do this. I feel like I'm not allowed. I don't feel like I'm valuable. And it really made me sad to hear them say this, and I'm a hardcore coach. So we were really big sister loving on this call, but I was so worried that maybe like I hurt their feelings a little bit because I am an aggressive, direct communicator. And I'm just so passionate about you having confidence in yourself and just seeing how defeated and deflated they felt and looked around the mere idea of this. We are just going to continue this conversation on our next mastermind call because it's just this ongoing, it doesn't happen overnight vibe. I still catch myself saying, use a travel agent. Like I still say it sometimes and I'm always like, no, Marcie, correct yourself. Like it's, it's not worth not being willing to make this change. Like it's so much more valuable to the industry as a whole to reprogram our brains. And I hate that so many advisors are out there believing this because it means you think you're not deserving. You think you're not worthy. You think your desires don't matter or that your financial success isn't important. And I want you to believe in yourself and what you want and know that you are deserving, but it does take real mental clarity, slowing down. Before making that post, slowing down before saying the words and reprogramming, retraining the brain to say, nobody's using me. They're hiring me. They're partnering with me. I'm going to shift just a little bit to the idea too, that there's a lot of miscommunication around whether advisors should charge and how other advisors often come at You for either charging or not charging, and this idea that good advisors don't operate on either side of that. Now, in many ways, I feel so worth it. I feel you're going to get so much from hiring me that I am unlike anyone else doing this job. I truly believe that. I believe that in myself now. But that doesn't mean that advisors who don't charge are not good advisors, and it doesn't mean that if you charge, you are duping somebody. It's a scam. So that's the other. Other little piece I just want to put out there today is if you see these conversations happening, like, let's try to help each other be on the same team. Stop aggressively attacking each other around whether we charge. Instead, let's educate on verbiage, language, how to elevate across the board regardless of your business model choice. That's how we truly are going to come together, because honestly, whether somebody charges or not has zero effect on you as an individual travel advisor, but saying free and use reinforces consumer behavior that our work— it reinforces consumer belief that our work has no inherent value. When you use the words use and free, it makes it harder for every advisor who is trying to position themselves as a professional. You can choose your own business model though. If you don't want to charge, if you're not ready, if you genuinely believe that your time is paid for within your commission, that's fine. But let's stop undermining the entire industry with dinosaur messaging and volatility in these social media spaces. Stop attacking people who charge and stop attacking people who don't charge. Instead, reengage and reeducate. With language changes, because when you audit that, it can really literally change everybody's visual on our industry as a whole. And we are each individually responsible for that piece of this entire industry. So today, after you get off of this pod, which always feels like a call, I almost said, once you get off this call, I want you to audit Your language. I want you to search your Instagram, all the reels you've done this year. I want you to check out your bio. I want you to go to your website, read all the copy, go to your Facebook, check out the description in your Facebook group, on your Facebook page, on your personal page, pinned post, what's going out in the DMs. Find those words. Free. Use. Rewrite it. Instead of use a travel agent, try Hire a travel advisor like me for insert niche. Partner with a travel expert like me for a memorable experience. Work with a professional who manages the complexity of your vacation like me, because I've been in business for X amount of years. Even if you don't charge a fee, because this is about perception and perception is very much reality in the world of marketing. It really is. Truly, you don't lose any kind of professional. You hire them. You don't lose expertise. You invest in it. So if you keep shrinking your language, you're going to keep shrinking your business.
