Whether you're an entrepreneur, you have your own business, or you work for another business, we all have ambitions of moving up within a company or growing our current companies. All of that is exponentially easier and more effective. When you pay attention to the mindset and emotions that you're operating from without coming from the right mindset and the right emotions driving you, then your odds of success go down significantly.
Business owners out there, please know the that you control the future. You control it, not the hands you've been dealt. I know we all grew up thinking that it is what it is. It's not. Welcome everybody to another episode of the Main Street Business podcast with the Main Street Influencer. And I'm so excited to interview Jody Moore. She has a corporate background and left that to pursue life coaching. She's got the business experience bringing together life coaching now changing the lives of so many business owners. I love her book, the best selling book, Better than Happy. I've read it myself. I've got a dog. I even gave it to one of my daughters. She really needed it.
Love it.
And she's got millions of downloads on her podcast, which I love. Jodi, thanks for being here with us.
Thanks so much for having me, Mark. I'm excited to be here.
Well, I appreciate you. We need you. The business owners of America need you and they don't even know it. It's kind of like my geeky accounting stuff there. I'm the day after guy. Okay, so here's the golden question.
Okay?
Tell everybody why life coaching and how it relates to business and then let's unpack that. And I think it's fascinating and I'm so excited to hear your thoughts.
Okay, well, life coaching is such a generic broad term. You don't know what that means from person to person. Right. When someone even says I'm a life coach, that literally anyone can say they're a life coach. And it's not against any kind of law, that it's not a regulated industry. So the type of life coaching that I'm trained in and that I know you practice and are familiar with, it has to do with just understanding your mindset and how that's driving you to create every result in your life, whether it be navigating challenges or going after goals. And so for me personally, when I first discovered life coaching and it, it helped me in a lot of areas, but one area immediately where I saw the impact was with regards to my goals and the things I wanted to create. So for anyone who isn't, whether you're an entrepreneur, you have your own business or you work for another business. We all have ambitions of maybe moving up within a company or growing our current companies. All of that is exponentially easier and more effective when you pay attention to the mindset and emotions that you're operating from. I think that the tools of life coaching are a game changer. And I say that because I've experienced that myself. But I've also witnessed it in hundreds of other people who apply these tools of. Not like we need to. We need people to tell us what to do. We need some advice about what to try in the real world. What we call action line advice, right? Like try this, try that. That's all good and fine to learn from one another, but without getting your head in the right place, without coming from the right mindset and the right emotions driving you, then your odds of success go down significantly. And the amount of success you can have varies greatly depending on your mindset. I'm sure you have experienced that as well.
I love it. And let me ask a question that relates to so much of that mindset too. And I just wanted to get here in the conversation and it's the feeling piece. A lot of business owners, I don't think they understand that their mindset affects so much of their feelings that drives their actions. And so I know that's kind of a unique concept of feelings and action. How do you explain that to business owners trying to make sense of all that?
Yeah, well, I think if we give some real examples, it helps, but I'll. Which I will in just a minute. Let me just preface by saying I like to think about our feelings or emotions as like the fuel that's driving us, right? So just like as you know, in our physical bodies, I can eat a candy bar and get one kind of energy or I can eat some healthy protein and things and get a different kind of energy. And both might give me energy, but one might have a crash on the other side or whatnot. Right? Like as human beings we're fueled in different ways by different things. The action that we take in the world is also fueled by emotions. This is why they say 80% of our communication is non verbal. Right. Body language. Because I might be like, let's say I'm, I'm. I'm selling something in my business, right? I go to sell something, I'm on a sales call, maybe a one on one call. I can say the right words, especially if I have a teacher that teaches me the right words to say. I can say the Right words. But if I don't have the right emotion driving me, the emotion of abundance and confidence, ideally. Right. Those are the most useful emotions on a sales call. If I'm coming from scarcity or fear or nervousness or desperation, I might say the same words but they'll come out differently. Through all my non verbals through whether or not I'm making eye contact, maybe things I don't think to ask, questions I don't ask. Maybe I hurrying in the call. So the same quote unquote action of having a sales call, even if you're following a script is going to go differently based on the emotions driving you. And as human beings we're experts at reading one another, right? So I can tell, we can all tell when somebody's trying to sell us something in the and we feel like their intentions are insincere or they're. They need this sale more than we really want to buy what they're selling. So your emotions are everything in business.
I love it. And you know, and the cool, the cool thing for me that was mind blowing in this understanding how we can hack our mind. And I really learned a lot of this from you too. I just give you so much credit for change lives of so many people.
Thank you.
And that was that. Well, okay, I'm going to go into this sales call. I'm going to have better feelings. I'm going to be excited. Oh my gosh. I'm going to close it. But, but that all starts with what I'm thinking about and controlling my thoughts. And, and we think, well, this is the circumstance. Life sucks. My bank account's low. It's just the way it is. I can't change. But controlling our thoughts or not controlling. How do you explain it? Like getting the right thought that drives that emotion. How do you. I love the way you explain that.
No, it is controlling your thoughts. I call it mind management because it's sort of like the brain tends towards scarcity and negativity and fear and all of that because of this basic primal survival part of our brains. Right? Our brains are like, let's just not. There's a part of our brain that only cares about not dying and anything beyond that. It's like why are we bothering with. Why do we need to do more? We're fine. Why do we need to try something different? What we're doing right now has kept us alive. Let's not bother. So that part of our brain is really strong. It's the kind of the immediate gratification part of the brain, right? And so you have to manage your mind. We're not mad at that part of the brain. We need it. It's serves us in many ways. We just don't want it always making the decisions and driving the car, if you will. We want it to be in the back seat or in the passenger seat. And we want the prefrontal wiser part of the brain driving the car and making more of our decisions. And so it is really, it is really directing your thinking. And it can be as simple as choosing. And here's the key. It's not just positive thinking, it's not just positive affirmations. If that works for people, great. But for me, it has to be what is a believable story that gets me into the emotional state I want to be in that I can focus on just before I go to that sales call. So, for example, if, if I am in that situation, like you said, where my bank account is empty and this is it, and I've got bills to pay and I'm going to this sales call and I really do need this sale, right, Then it's going to be tempting to come into it with scarcity and all of that. So what I want to do is take just a minute ahead of time to talk to myself. And some people do it in writing, some people do it with a coach and remind myself, listen, if this call, if this, if I don't close this sale, it's okay. There are a bunch of other people out there I can talk to. Or sometimes I just like to do what I call making peace with worst case scenario, which for me is like, you know what, I could just go to Chick Fil A. I'm pretty sure they're hiring. Like, I'm not gonna let my family starve. Or sometimes I even will be like, if I really need to, I could move in with my parents or whatever, right? These are scenarios that none of us really want that, that we're probably, hopefully never gonna get to. But you have to quiet that part of your brain that's like, I don't think you understand. We're out of money, we're gonna die. And what you're reminding yourself is we're not gonna die. There are actually hundreds of other options before death. Okay? And of course, of course what we prefer is that we close this sale. But we're not gonna, we're not gonna get all worked up over it because that's just not gonna serve us in the end, right?
That's an abundance mindset, right? Cause it's like I have all these options. That's the abundance part, is that thought.
And there really are always countless options. And it blows my mind how many people don't see this. Right? Like, I, I'm sure you experienced this. When we talk to you business owners who are thinking about maybe buying a program or hiring a coach or something like that. And it's always, I don't have the money for that or I don't have the money to invest in my business. And I, I say, well, I wonder how you could get some money to invest in your business. And they literally look at me like, I have no idea. And I'm like, really? Because. And I'm talking to people, I'm talking about someone in this case who lives in the United States of America, like me, right? And I'm like, you don't have Chick Fil A downtown. You don't have Etsy. Don't they have Uber in your town? Like, there's a, in, there's a million ways. And I'm not telling anyone to go do any of those things. I'm telling them, open your mind up to the literally millions of possible ways for you to make some money to then invest in your business. And ultimately we want the business to be supporting us. Right? But it. In a scarcity mindset, we have these blinders on. We're like, I don't, I can't think of a way.
Yeah, I love that. You, yeah, you've heard of a second or third job. We all done it, I think. Well, I like your concept about that primitive mind. And I want to go back to the cave. I wrote down on my phone some of the notes I was excited to bring up. And that was ironically, one of them is that as business owners were in that cave, like, oh my gosh, I can't go out there, I can't go get that business owner, invest in myself or take the next step because we're so afraid. And we were one track mind of that saber tooth tiger that might be out there that's going to come get us. So for business owners, and this is. Okay. And so I wanted to say this. I want everybody here to know this concept of brain on brain that we have got to have someone showing us what our brain's doing because we're in it. We can't think, we can't see it when we're in it. We're in the cave. I can't get out. And so this brain on brain is that life coaching, which I freaking love is because it starts to teach you that you're thinking this and look what you're doing because of it. But we don't see it.
What do you.
I mean, how do you. Do you like that brain? I mean, you've used that term brain on brain and.
Yeah, I mean, it's sort of the whole like you can't read the label from inside the bottle kind of analogy that we're not even aware sometimes. And, And I will say that if you really study this work, I think that 80% of it you can do on your own. But there is always a 20% that. And I always know, I'm like, I am stuck. I can't get myself out of this one. And I got to get on the phone with a coach and have them talk me through it and show me my own blocks. So that's the reality in the. And I've been studying this work for over 12 years, you know, and so there's a power to somebody pointing out your blind spots. And that is what, you know, I'm sure you and I both love about coaching is it's like a gift, right? It's like I kind of equate it to like someone telling me that I have lettuce in my teeth. If I'm not in front of a mirror, I don't know, I have lettuce in my teeth and I need someone to point it out to me. Then I can choose if I want to do something about it or not. But if I don't know, I'm just walking around with lettuce in my teeth. And that's what a good coach does, is just point out, like, things that you may not be aware of and, and how that might be affecting you. And then you get to decide whether you want to do something about it or not. And.
Oh, yeah, yeah. And let's talk about the decide part. That was the revelation for me. It was about two and a half years ago, a life coach. And I was a little, you know, life coaching is janky. Woohoo. Whatever. I'm a tax lawyer. I'm like, I don't care about feelings. I'm just going to go out and, you know, slay the dragons, whatever. And this life, this life coach was like, you gimme one hour. If I don't.
If I.
If you're unpressed, in one hour, I'm going to show you how to look at your mind. I'm like, all right, whatever. So at the end of that hour, I was like, in tears. You've seen it A thousand times and better than any therapist. Not the therapists aren't great. A lot of people need marriage counselors or other therapists to like help, you know, work through issues. But this was so forward thinking in this decide thing. Here's what I had. This was my decide image. And you tell me what other image you like is that I'm dry. I'm sitting there on a lawn looking up at the clouds and I can look at which cloud I want to choose to think about. All right, what does that cloud look like to me? Or it could be cars driving by on a freeway. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to let that car take the exit. I'm going to deal with that car. Nope, that's a bad thought. They're always going to be there. There's going to be clouds in the cars going by. But I'm not going to give it airtime. That's, I have the choice to do that. I never knew I have the choice, right? Thoughts were only thoughts.
It's so true. And people say that all the time. When, when we start pointing out like this is a thought, this is not a fact, it's a thought, it's a story, right? And they'll say, but it's true, right? So for example, like, like that person doesn't like me. I coach a lot on mother in laws and things, right? So like my mother in law doesn't like we all have a mother in law, right? I happen to get along great with mine.
You can make millions with that mother in laws.
But you know, they'll say, but it's true. I'm like, why? Every time you think the thought my mother in law doesn't like me, how do you feel? And then who do you become, right? I feel, I feel terrible, I feel mad or I feel whatever. And then you know who we become? Not the best daughter in law, not the best son in law, right? Like I, I kind of avoid her or I just whatever. And I, I, I don't want to go to family gatherings. And when I do, I keep my distance. I'm like, I can't imagine why she doesn't like you. You sound so likable. Right? So, so when we start pointing out, okay, that's just a thought, my mother in law doesn't like me. And they'll say, but it's true. Like she's told my husband, I don't really like her. She, she might tell people that. And I'm like, okay, but still, like to your point, it's Not a thought. You need to walk around thinking necessarily. If it's not serving you, what is the upside? And that's what we want to do. We want to. We can let our brains, like, again, 80, 90% of the time, you just let your brain choose its thoughts and it's going to work pretty well for the most part. But there's that 10 to 20% where you want to go. You know what, we're not going to focus on that anymore. We're going to focus on this instead. So in business, in my experience, is one of the most powerful ways or places to apply that concept. So, for example, I was just talking to a business owner, a coach, who was talking about her email open rates, and she's like, people are unsubscribe. I'm getting subscribers to my list, but then I'm getting unsubscribers and they're not opening my emails and all of this. And. And she kept talking about these unsubscribers. And I was like, why are we thinking about unsubscribers? Because how many people are on your list? She, she's got a big email list and she doesn't have a full coaching practice. So I was like, if we, if we just decide. I want to say she had like 3,000 people on her email list. And I'm like, what if. Are there 200 people out of that 3,000 that are pretty regularly reading your emails and not unsubscribing that want your coaching? They just don't understand that they want it yet you haven't sold them on the value of it and you haven't invited them well enough to come and learn about it. And she's like, yeah, like, out of 3,000, are there 200? And would that, that would like, blow her business out of the water if she had 200 clients, right? So I'm like, why are we thinking about the 2,800 or what? Whatever the math is, why are we thinking about all the others? You need to be thinking about the 200 that want your services. They just don't realize it yet. They haven't heard about it enough. They haven't been so long. Don't think about the unsubscribers. Even though it's true people are unsubscribing, who cares? We're not thinking about them. We're thinking about the right fit person. So it's exactly like you said. Which cloud in the sky, which car on the freeway am I going to focus on? Are you focusing on the lack. Are you focusing on what, what's wrong? Or are you focusing on how to enhance what could be right? It's a.
It's totally, totally different. And if you guys aren't seeing this or feeling it, let me explain in baby steps here. Yeah, if you control what you're thinking, it's going to elicit a feeling. And if it's like a crappy feeling, like, maybe I should quit thinking that and I'm going to think of something else that. Oh, 200 subscribers. Yeah, 200 people want to hear me. I'm going to focus on bringing them in. How can I get them across the threshold? And I love how you. That's a great example because it's just that brain on brain. You helped her shift the mindset.
Yes, that's right. And it's tempting, it's challenging to do because your brain's like. But we should figure out why people are unsubscribing. I'm like, why we don't care. Like, it's not relevant. And you have to. I like what you said about then what am I going to think about instead? Right. Because we do have to then redirect to what is more useful. But usually I'm in this course right now with Dr. Benjamin Hardy. Know if you've heard of Dr. Benjamin Hardy?
Yep.
His book 10X is easier than 2X is all about this, like, really, really filtering your life right now from your future self that is ten times beyond where you are in terms of your progress in your business, your personal growth, your development. It can apply in your relationships, anything you want. But like, that future self, that's 10, that's only five years out and is 10 times beyond where you are right now. What does he or she want you to be doing right now and want you to be thinking about? And what, what do they want you to be saying no to? And, and just like thinking about it that way is totally blowing my mind and making me like, shift what I, what I even have the room for in my head and in my day to focus on. And it's just so much more fun then, like you said, letting that primitive brain that's just kind of afraid and wants to just do this same thing over and over again. The problem is that gets boring too. Right. There's no upside to staying in the cave. We get bored and restless and we call it unfulfilled or whatever. So if, if that were peaceful, I'd help people. But for those of us that have big ambitions, it's not Peaceful either. So.
No. Well, that's funny that I love doing the future self work because. Because you can, like, okay, I can envision myself there and I'm gonna. What would I tell myself? And it's almost like you're in the cave and you're not worried about what's out 50ft in front of you. You're looking over at the horizon.
Yeah.
Okay. I can get over to that mountain.
Yes.
And it. It changes our whole mindset of being stuck in there. It gives us a place to go.
Yeah. That's a great way to think about it, because then the next question is, well, how. Right. If I. If I set a 10x goal, like, I want to be the next Oprah Winfrey. I want to have my own show, and I want to bring people on, and I want to do coaching and I want to bring on experts, and I want to talk about this on a show. Okay. Then my race. Well, how are we going to do that? And the answer is, I don't know. I don't know from the cave. I don't know how I'm going to get to that mountaintop. But what I do know is that over the next 90 days, I need to get from here down to that field. And so get out of the cave. Yeah. And so how am I going to try? Let's just. Let's just do that. You approach it 90 days at a time, but letting the. The future goal be the sort of the pull that's driving you and the filter for. What am I thinking about? What am I focusing on? And who am I becoming ultimately?
Okay, so my business owners to follow me. What have you been doing? Freaking life coaching. This is what it is. It's this easy. This is why I wanted Jodi here, because I need all of you to catch the vision here that hiring a life coach once a week to just go, what the hell are you thinking about? I don't know. Well, guess what? You get it. You get to choose. And how are you feeling? Crappy. Well, let's dump the drawer open. What are those thoughts mumbling around in there? Let's get rid of that junk drawer crap and let's talk about what really matters. And that brain on brain. I love people. You've got to get Jody's book better than Happy. Get on your podcast platform, type in Jody Moore. It's down the links down below, and start drinking her freaking Kool Aid.
Because she.
She.
Because she's.
She's moving into the business realm, which I love. And because. Because it Is true life coaching seems like, oh, it's just life. No. You freaking business owners, you need this.
Yeah.
So important.
For sure. It's. Yeah. I don't know how. I don't know how business owners doing it do it without this stuff. I don't. I don't think I could be where I am if I didn't have a coach keeping my head straight. Or be. I've talked to people who say, be careful when you start your business. You know, it can be a lot and it takes over your life and you're going to get burned out. And I realized those are people doing it without coaching. It doesn't have to be that. So.
No. Because you leave so much carnage in your path. You like, whether it's family or friends or employees, and it's like, it's no fun learning by mistake and, and just going for it, hoping it works out.
Yeah.
Okay, so practical. Let's. Let's get one last practical tip out here. Your time is so valuable and I freaking love you.
So.
All right, so circumstance. I want to. Now for those. If some of you are like, what are these coach words? Circumstance, actions, feelings. You're like, what the hell? You've got to listen to Jody's podcast and she'll freaking explain it. It's called the Model. You'll freaking love it. Okay. Circumstance. For me and a lot of my business owners, especially accountants and attorneys, we're all like this, right? Brain crazy people. It's like, that's my circumstance. My marriage sucks, my bank account sucks, my business sucks. I can't hire good employees. Whatever your story is, y' all have one.
Yeah.
And it's true to you. And that's the circumstance. So now I've got to work my way out of the circumstance. They think, what do you tell someone I love? Tell me what you do when someone's like, this is my circumstance. This sucks. And it's true, Jody. Dammit.
Well, the way we use circumstance in the model that you're talking about, Mark, is the circumstances, just the facts. The really boring, very facty, like, could be proven in a court of law. Even though I know there's some nuances there. The attorney. Attorneys always point out that you can actually prove things that aren't even that true. But you know, for the sake of argument, let's just say, like, it could be scientifically proven. Right. So that's why when. When the person says to me, my mother in law doesn't like me, I don't make that the circumstance because I can't Go draw blood from your mother in law and be like, it's true, you. She is negative for liking you. She doesn't have that in her blood. Like, even if your mother in law on one day feels like she doesn't like you, she might feel differently tomorrow. Or it might be that she actually doesn't like herself. But the way it comes out is I don't like you. So it's not scientifically provable. We don't make that the circumstance. We can make the circumstance. Her words, she said, quote, I don't like her, then we could make that a circumstance. So for business owners, a lot, one of the circumstances I hear coming up a lot for people right now is the economy, right? They're like, the economy sucks, interest rates are high, everything's harder, right? Because of the economy. They want to make that the circumstance. I'm like, no, no, we're not making that the circumstance. I'm sorry, but give me. We can get specific facts about the interest rate or about, you know, stuff in the market. We can pull some facts. But what I'm interested in is what are the specific facts in your life and in your business that are impacting you? Is it last month or last year, this month I made this much revenue and this, this year, same month I made this much and it's 50% less. Okay, we can make that a fact. But don't just start throwing stuff up into the circumstance line because you hear everyone saying it, because then it feels true and outside of our control. The truth is what's really driving us is our thoughts, our stories, right? So the economy sucks right now is a story a lot of people believe. A lot of people are buying, like,
awesome for some people. Like, the economy is perfect for my business.
The economy could be perfect for some businesses, right? Or like when the economy's down, is the, is when people need more help. I mean, there's like a whole bunch of versions of stories that could be still believable and true. The point is, and for me, it's usually like, I don't need the whole economy to be healthy. I. I just need to figure out how to help the group of people I'm trying to help to be. And I can be really successful. I can make millions of dollars helping the people I help.
Our business is great for the economy.
Yeah.
Need tax advice when things are crappy and they need financial advice. Tough. And then they go home and feel crappy and they need their life coach. It's like you and I are the one, two punch Like, a bad economy is perfect for us.
Yeah. And we're not talking about, let's take advantage of people because they're struggling. It's just the way you think about what's going on in the. Like, for. I remember when Covid hit. I. Sorry. I know we're running out of time, but I remember when Covid hit and everybody was freaked out about what was going to happen. Right. And I remember just thinking, like, okay, I could be freaked out, too, because I don't know what. None of us knew what was going to happen, how long it was going to last, what it was going to do to people, financially, et cetera. And I was like. Or I could think, people really need my help right now. I am going to go help them. And I. We threw up a whole bunch of free webinars.
You were everywhere.
We're just like, you got. Everybody's struggling mentally, emotionally. I got you. This is my Super Bowl. And we didn't, like, jack up prices. In fact, we did a whole bunch of free stuff because we're like, now is our time to show up and take care of people. And we trust that one day that will come back to us. And it does. But that was not. Not really the main intent. So you can think. You can think whatever you want about any given circumstance. You want to choose it intentionally, and it's that, you know, like you said, the circumstance is never creating your result is what the model shows us. In the end, the circumstance is not responsible for your result. It's everything from the thought line down. So your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions are creating your result, even if the result is your experience of the circumstance. Right. So every result that we have, we've created. And when you recognize that that's good news, then you become empowered to create anything you want.
And I'm going to use one other example, because you've got my juices flowing. I know we could talk about this for I. But accountants, everybody has an accountant. Everybody's got to file taxes. And what are we on the cusp of 60 days from now? Tax season again?
Yeah.
And anybody that's an accountant enrolled agent cpa, they're like, tax season's coming. I don't want tax season. Some of you business owners are like, I got to prepare taxes again. I just got them done. And la, la, la, la. I got the Corporate Transparency act coming. La, la, la. Or we could go. You know what? This is the year I'm going to build an advisory practice. This is a year I'm going To elevate my clientele. I'm going to help clients out the door that don't appreciate me. I'm going to honor myself. I'm going to respect my time value of money. And just that different mindset.
Yeah.
Um, creates a feeling that's so much more empower, empowering, and, yeah, I love that.
And it comes from asking good questions, because our brain, a lot of our thoughts come in the form of questions like, oh, why me? Why do I have to do this again? Why is this so hard? Why? Right. Like, dumb questions. Because the answers are like, I don't know. I don't know. Probably. Probably because you suck. Probably because you're dumb. Like, those are the answers to those kinds of questions. So we want to ask questions like, what would make this easier and more fun? What would make this more lucrative? How could I serve double the amount of clients I'm serving in tax season and take more days off? When you ask questions like that, your brain will go, I don't know. It's not possible. But you just let the question live there and go, but what if there was a way? What if there was a way? And that's where you evolve your business and evolve yourself by asking the right questions. My favorite is, what would make this easier and more fun and more productive? Like, how would. How could I serve double the amount of people and make it be easier and more fun for myself?
I love it. Well, you know, it's Chick Fil A. Chick Fil A. Yeah, Just Chick Fil
A. Chick Fil A. Chickfila. The most things, it turns out it is. I'm with you, Chick Fil A.
Well, Jody, I am so glad you joined me. Thank you so much. And business owners out there, please know that you control the future. You control it, not the hands you've been dealt. I know we all grew up thinking that it is what it is. It's not. And, Jody, you've been a breath of fresh air today. And if hopefully many of you realize that just having someone ask you poignant questions once a week, that's what a life coach is. It's that easy. Right on the brain.
That's right. So good. Thanks for having me. It's fun.
