How I Helped Someone Save $500,000 On Crypto Taxes

In this video, Mark Kohler explains how a client saved over $500,000 in taxes by moving unsold cryptocurrency into a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT). By transferring the crypto to the trust and then selling it, the client avoids immediate capital gains tax. The trust, for which the client serves as the investment trustee, can continue to invest the proceeds tax‑free. The client receives quarterly lifetime distributions calculated as a percentage of the trust’s value, determined by IRS tables based on the beneficiary’s age and gender. The remaining assets ultimately go to charity, providing the donor with a charitable tax deduction. While taxes are owed on the distributions when received, the overall strategy yields a larger, tax‑deferred income stream, asset protection, and a charitable legacy.
