I love saving money, I love making money and it is so much easier in life when we stay organized. We have a plan, we build wealth and we feel like we have some financial freedom. Now I'm going to share 12 strategies. 12 different strategies you may have not even heard of that you can employ with your 401k. Now this is whether you have a day job, you have a small business, a big business, or you have both or you're married and one spouse is working, the other one's running the side hustle. You've got kids. No kids, young or old people. These 12 strategies are, are going to blow your mind. Can we say that about a 401k? I don't know if that, that's cool enough to, you know, blow your mind. 401k strategies. I was thinking more of, you know, fireworks on fourth of July. But anyway, we're going to do our best here to rock your world today. Now, if you have any questions, please type them in down below. My producer in the studio is going to read those out to us as they're applicable to the topic. Sorry. Don't write your life story about your grandma's tax problem. That's not for today. It's about your 401k which is what I'm going to explain it here in just a minute. Some important concepts that will help you really take advantage of this incredible tool that's available to all working Americans. So ignore any comments in the chat about someone trying to sell you some freaking bitcoin or some bot or mark, maybe millions and click here. Crap. Just ignore all that. Just focus on your listening, watching your questions. I'm going to bring the whiteboard here in, in a moment. I've got a yellow pad with 12 awesome strategies. So we've allowed everybody rolling in here. Let's get to it. I'm going to come out strong with probably my top three mind blowing strategies and then we're going to unpack it, we're going to fill in the gaps and really build it with all of these. Again, strategies you may have never heard of, but I want to go out with my top three. Number one is that you can. By the way, I'm going to back up. Before I give you my 12, let me say this. Remember that the 401k is a vehicle. It's like a car, a Truck, a van. And it can hold different quantities of goods. It can hold some weight, more than less weight, a sports car compared to an SUV. Some can go faster or slower. A 401k is just a vehicle. A lot of people are like, well I don't want a 401k because I hate Wall Street. You can put crap in a 401k. That's going to be one of our three that is not in Wall Street. You could put real estate notes and alt investments. Your brother in law's landscaping business can be owned in part by your 401k. You can invest in what you know. So we're going to come back to that. But the point is it's a vehicle. You get to put in the truck or car, suv, what you want and you can even drive it. It doesn't have to be driven by TD Ameritrade and some 1-800-number to India, I don't know where, or some financial advisor or broker that's like, hey, let me sell you an ETF and get you 5% after all the fees buried in this crap, let's get you investing in that vehicle and let you drive it the way you want to. So don't think of a 401k as a wall street thing. It's just a vehicle to help build you wealth. Now concept number two, before we get into our 12, is that a 401K is a tax deferred or tax free vehicle. You can have what's called a Roth 401K which we're going to unpack in these 12 things where that money grows with no taxes and comes out tax free. It's called a 401k Roth. And you can also buy things, invest in things in your 401k and then when you pull it out in the future, you get taxed. But you got a tax write off to put the money in. So either you get a tax write off to put the money in, you pay tax when it comes out 20 years from now, or you get no tax deduction on the way in. You use after tax money, you already pay tax on it, then you throw it in and it grows tax free forever. And final point, some of you that are younger and I know some of you under age 30 are like, I don't want a 401k, I need the money. I'm going to buy real estate, I'm going to build my wealth. 401k, I can't touch it. The hell you can't. You can invest your 401k again in what you know. And do it tax free and better asset protected. Remember OJ Simpson who's still living on his NFL 401k, no one could touch it. Even when he was in prison for busted into a hotel room in Vegas. He got his a civil judgment and the, the entire murder story. Then go watch the miniseries on that. It's incredible. But this is, this is a, it's, it's such a cool vehicle. And no matter how young you are, you've got to realize the sooner you get started saving money, the more you make. And one example on this, and then we're into our 12, is if you can just put five grand in an IRA or five grand in your 401k at age 15, just say you're 15 years old. Some of you may have kids, settle. You can think of yourself at age 25 or 35 now. But if you can put just five grand every year in your IRA or 401k starting age 15, 40 years later, at 40 to 25 or 35, whatever, 40 years later, you will have over $5 million tax free. So I want to put that money at 5,000 a year. That doesn't count any of your other investments, day jobs, 401ks, invest your home equity, whatever. I'm just saying five grand and we're going to be getting better than a 10% return in that on average. And hence it snowballs and grows crazy. How would you like $5 million tax free down the road? Your parents would kill for that right now. They probably kill you for that. But. And we will go there. So let's be thinking about how powerful the 401k is first as we hit these 12. Okay, strategy number one. So many people don't realize you can have multiple 401ks. You can have a 401k at work, you can have your 401k for your Uber business, you can have a 401k for your cupcake store on the main street business, you can have multiple 401ks. Now, the amount you can put in those 401ks is limited whether. So let's say this year it's 22,500. Well, I can put it all in one 401k. That's just the deferral, by the way. We're going to blow your mind on other numbers here. But you could put that 7,000 and change in three different 401ks. So you can have multiple 401ks and you can leverage that by having access to the money in a different way. At your day job, possibly you can't invest that 401k the way you want, but in your personal 401k, you can invest it in a lot more creative ways. So point number one is you can have multiple 401ks. Point number two, and I've said it over and over and let's get it off the table that blows people's mind is you can self direct your 401k and that means invest in what you know. You literally can take your self directed 401k and invest in your brother's landscaping business, your friend's rental property that they're rehabbing down the street, an online business, buy and sell trucks or cars, buy RVs and rent RVs. You can do all of that in your 401k. So if you can get a 10, 20 or 30% ROI doing a small business, let your 401k own the business, not you. You can't work inside your 401k and take a salary, but your 401k can do a lot of investments. People don't realize and that's called self directing. Now caveat, if you have a day job, they're not going to let you do that crap. They're going to give you their normal garbage. This Wall Street 5% to 8% if you're lucky with tons of fees buried in that 401k. So that's why I like having another 401k flexibility with hence which goes back to ruled or mind blowing Strategy number one is you can have multiple 401ks. Now next and let's see here. Okay, want to make sure if we have any questions coming through. Next. Number three, you can put away far more money in a 401k than you realize. It's called the Mega Backdoor Roth. So you can create a Roth 401K. I've got another video on YouTube if you want to get the details on this, type in Mega Backdoor Kohler and you're going to just see an incredible video I just recorded a week ago that breaks it down. If you're 50, 50 or older, you can put $81,000 into a 401k. Yeah, 81,000. Well Mark, I thought it was 22, 5 and well then the company match and this and that. Oh no, no. I break down in that video how you can get to 81 grand per person. If you're married, we could do 162. Yeah, crazy right? Next. If you're under age 50, we can do 72,572 five. And that could be all Roth money. That's mind blowing. And this is how the rich get richer. I'm grateful you're watching this because if you want to get rich, you want to learn these strategies and start building wealth as fast as possible. So that's point number three is you can really load up a 401k and get tax deductions or build it within a Roth tax free. Okay, now let's go over to the small business owner for a moment. Most of my followers have a side hustle or a small business. 50% of Americans have another source of income besides their day job. So if you've got that side hustle, that can fund a 401k. So that's number four is that if you have a small business with no employees, maybe this little side hustle, no employees, that's called a Solo 401K. You can set up your own solo. We charge a thousand bucks to set up a 401k of which you get to control the checkbook and invest it with what you want. That's at our law firm. We do it every day around the country. So as long as you have a small business, my challenge to you is don't take that extra small business income and go spend it. Let's fund a second 401k and then you can invest it. It's not the restrictive type of 401k you have at your day job. So that's number four. Number five is if you do have employees, you can't do the solo. And it's going to limit your ability to really sock away that 70 or $80,000. But you can still do a lot. And it's called a safe harbor 401k. And you only have to match up to 4% of what your employees put into their whatever their salary is up to 4% of their salary if they participate. What's interesting is 40% of employees don't even participate in the 401k at work. They'd rather go spend the money to. Typical American thing. But so as a small business owner, if you have employees, you're only putting up into up to 4% of their salary on only maybe 50% of the employees. And that allows you to open the door and have a self directed group 401k or this safe harbor 401k and it's not as expensive as you think. Some people think, well, I have employees so I can't do a 401k. No no, no, look at the safe harbor and run the numbers. They can be phenomenal. Number six. I love the match strategy. The match is a wonderful thing. This is where the day job pays off. And I just referred to it. If you're the employee, not the employer and you have a W2 your spouse or you, you got a day job, find out immediately at work what the match is. Typically, like I said, around 4%. So if you have a $50,000 salary, the going to put in 2 grand. You make 100 grand a year. They'll put in 4, but it requires you to put in the 2 or the 4. You've got to put in your 4% of your salary, then they match it. That's 100% return. So I don't care if they're investing in Wall street, making you 5%, you're getting double right out of the gate. So that's a good thing. That's a, a, a point that a lot of people that are new to small, new to employment don't realize how powerful the 401k is. We've had employees in our law firm that have been with us, a couple find out why aren't you playing in the 401k? And they're like, oh, I didn't listen to that meeting or I didn't get involved, I didn't know. So really get educated on that. And I, it's just super powerful. That's number six. Number seven is what I call the match and out strategy, which means get your match and if you're like, well Mark, I can save more than four grand, I can do better than that. Great. Put in the four, get the $4,000 match, double your money, then take that money and go do other things with it. Fund your health savings account, which you get a tax deduction right on the front page of your tax return. You can invest that as well, tax free and it comes out at any age tax free for health care. So it's like a supercharged 401k where you get a write off, it grows tax free and comes out tax free. It's like a trifecta. You get a triple out of it and you don't pay any tax on that money as it comes out if you use it for health care. And the list is huge. Publication 502 is dental, eyes, co pays, deductibles, prescription drugs, physical therapy, the list goes on and on. So really build that hsa. So don't just put blindly all your money in your day job. 401k, take it, just turn around and put some of that money in your HSA and they get back in the game and that can be a huge benefit. Next, number seven is utilizing the Roth now in your day job and you can do this in your own Solo 401k, you can make your contribution a Roth and not a traditional. See, most people think, oh, if I put money in my 401k, it's deducted from my W2. Yes, that's a traditional 401k, but a Roth 401k, you still get a W2 and you pay tax. But that money goes away and will never be taxed again. For those that saw in the news last year Peter Thiel that invested in PayPal and Facebook, his Roth IRA is now over $6 billion. And he started with a Roth IRA just like the rest of us, under 10 grand. But he invested it 20 years ago in small ventures like Facebook and PayPal. Not that I would love to roll into one of those meetings and throw down some Roth money, but he was able to do that. And the point is you can grow it as much as you want. You just have that contribution. That's a hold up. So that's a big deal. Now number eight that I love is your match that the employer does can be a Roth as well. So you can go to your, your employer and say, hey, I want the money you're putting in to be a Roth money too. Now that came with a Secure Act 2.0 last year. Huge new strategy. So you go to your employer and say, I want it. Roth people, the reason why we want Roth is because it outperforms every other traditional model because the longer you hold it, the more it snowballs and you'll never pay tax. Don't get sucked into someone saying, well, yeah, you'll be in a lower tax bracket or a higher tax bracket and you get the write off here and write off there. Every time I run the model, you win with the Roth in the long run. And I just, it's just so, so powerful. Now number nine, if you really want to put money away at work, a lot of people don't know about this. And I learned this from, from up in North Dakota. There was a bunch of oil rig workers and gas and oil, gas and energy workers that were up there and they were living in trailers, making a lot of money but had no expenses. They were just going to the bar every Friday night, then back to the oil rigs or the gas refineries and all those things. They were making great Money. And they didn't know where to put it, so they called their employer. I learned this about five years ago. It was just. It's phenomenal. And they said, can I keep putting more money in my 401k? And they go, yeah, but you don't get a tax deduction. You would never want to do that. And they go, no, no, no, I'll do that. I'll put that extra money in, called an after tax contribution. And then I want to convert it to Roth on day two. And when they convert to Roth, there's no tax because it was already included in their W2. For some of you that want to really sock the money away and you don't have the side hustle, you can do what's called the after tax contribution. Another crazy strategy that's just incredible. All right, I see we got a question. Let's go to some questions here. Tristan, what do you got?
I got a question from Texas country living. He's 59 and a half. No W2. He's got capital gains of around 200k a year. That varies a little bit. He's got a 401k with a $4 million balance. He wants to know is Roth conversions the best way to go, or is there any other considerations for a large balance K?
So he doesn't want to put more money in. He just wants to know if Roth conversion is a good idea.
Yeah, exactly. Or if there's another route with a
large balance K. Well, yes. What I encourage all my clients to do is what we call Roth chunking. So any of you out there that have 10 grand in a 401k or a million dollars in a 401k, let's find the perfect time to convert to Roth and let's chunk at it. Because if you convert too much to Roth, it might throw you in a higher tax bracket. So I have another video on YouTube. Type in Roth Chunking Kohler, and you're going to see a video on this chunking strategy. And I point out, based on what tax bracket you're in, how much you should chunk before you wait till next year. So the beauty is, Texas Follower here is if you take a little stab at it every year and chunk at it, within five years, it'll be done. You'll never pay tax on that money again. Then you can really double down into some alt assets. Look at, look at investing in some syndications, investing in small business in your area, investing in a rental property, duplex, fourplex, raw land. Invest in your community around you where, you know, you could make 10 or 20% on that money and you'll never pay tax again. So I think at any level, any of you out there, small or large, that have a 401k, make sure you get over and chunk that into the Roth every year until it's all Roth and never put money in again unless it's Roth. Go ahead. Tristan, another question.
All right, this one's from Brenda. She wants to know, can you fund a solo K with a side hustle even though she makes very little quote unquote on paper?
Yes, you can still fund it. Let's say, for example, you make, let's say you're just doing Uber and you're making part time, 20 grand a year doing Uber. But you're like, mark, I really want to put that away for the future. I don't want to go live in a nicer apartment or house. I don't need to go buy a nicer car. I'm doing Uber to build wealth for the future. Boy, bless your heart. You start socking away 10 to 15 grand a year, within 10 years you're going to have millions. It's crazy. So get on it. So if you have an Uber business, you can set up a little solo 401k and, and even with that extra 10 to $15,000, you can throw that right into a 401k and invest it in what you know. Meanwhile, you may have your day job and you're getting the match, and you may have a little Roth ira. I always want you to look at your Roth or your health savings account. So people were trying to take multiple pieces here and build an overall portfolio. Now what you invest in, again, you get to choose. My goal as your tax advisor is to get it on it on your tax return in those buckets and then growing tax free. That's what the wealthy do. That's what my rich clients do. As a tax lawyer, I meet with rich clients all the time and people trying to be rich. I've done over 10,000 consultations. You know what I've learned? Clients buy real estate, hard assets, syndications. They invest in what they know, small business, and they use their Roth IRA or Roth 401k to do it. They've got millions tax free, and it doesn't happen overnight. You just take your time. So text or call her there. If you have just even a small little side hustle, let's fund your Roth IRA, your HSA and create a little solo 401k and start socking that money away. You could even have a loss in your business. So let's say you have. So I presume you're gonna have a day job and you got this little side hustle that maybe is making five to ten grand. It can have a loss with your contribution to your 401k, meaning you could put money into your business to fund the 401k and let it go and get a loss. But again, if you do the Roth, it doesn't matter because you're not getting a write off for the 401k, super powerful. If any of you are loving this and you're like, oh my gosh, this is a lot, Mark, I don't understand all this, but I feel it. I understand. I can see how important it is. Please get a consult with one of my tax lawyers or, or one of my tax advisors. That could be extremely affordable. We want to save you 10 times whatever you pay us. Yeah, this one's a little more generic, but just something we can touch on. Dayton asks, tell me why I need a Roth IRA. What will 7,000 a year do for me? He says that his Robin hood is down 30%.
Why?
Would it be beneficial?
Okay, you bet. Well, first of all, what's their first name again? I apologize.
Dayton.
Dayton. Dayton. I'm. I use ACORNS Robin Hood. What's the other one everybody likes to Tristan Itcher. It's not Stitcher, it's. That's a podcast.
Don't know off top of my head.
Oh my gosh, I forgot. But Robin Hood and Acorns, they're terrible to invest your money because you're just buying in Wall Street. So Dayton, I don't want you putting your money in. Okay, so you've equated Roth with Robinhood. So you've got a Robinhood car. I want you to get rid of the Robinhood car and have a self directed car so you can put that seven grand in it and invest it in a small business down the street or loan it to someone at 10 to 12% interest that needs a bridge loan, that's doing some financing on real estate. And if you can put seven grand a year for about three to five years now you've got 50 grand you're playing with. You're a roller. And you're not in frickin Robin Hood. You're not in Acorns, you're not in TD Ameritrade, you're not in Merrill Lynch. The website to go for this is directed ira.com directed ira.com this year we hit over $2 billion of people that are taking their money and investing it in alt assets. That's alternative assets from Wall Street. So your problem is Robin Hood, not the Roth. When you say what can a Roth do for me, dude? And I wish I had some of the little math here. Like I said early on, five grand a year for 40 years. At 10%, you're going to have over 4 to 5 million sitting in that Roth. The problem is Robin Hood's down 30% because you're stuck at freaking Wall Street. Get out of there. Go self direct. And you're like, well Mark, I don't have enough money to invest. Well, what I do is I, I pool my money, I take some of my kids, my friends, we have taken multiple IRAs and put them in an LLC and then go invest in a rental property. So if you're like, Well I need 80 grand to go do a down payment and buy that rental, we'll get together four friends that have 20 grand each. So each of you have 20 grand in an old IRA or 401k, take those four, form an LLC, go buy your rental so you can pool your money, you can invest in what you know. And if you make an appointment with one of my lawyers, they, they will help design it for you. Our LLC is A multi member LLC with all these IRAs is 1500 bucks. It's that simple. It's that affordable. And a real lawyer walks you through it. Another podcast that you've got to check out is Directed IRA Podcast. The Directed IRA Podcast. And that's a podcast I'm a co host on. We've got over a hundred shows. It's one of the best, if not the the best in this space on the podcast platforms. All right, I want to give you 11 and 12 and then I'll come back to Tristan. Any of you have questions, type them up. Tristan's going to choose what we're going to cover and I'll reread these 12. But 11 and 12 are the side door 401k. This is one a lot of people don't know about. Let's say you just have rental property. I was thinking of the person that asked the question that said, well, all I have is capital gains. I don't have a small business, I don't have a day job, I've just got capital gain. Well, you normally can't put money into a 401k if all you have is rental income or capital gains. But if you can take that, that rental property business and pay a sister company to manage your rentals, which you would never do because you don't need to, you can still have asset protection with an LLC in your rentals. But now I'm going to pay a sister company to manage your own rentals, which is going to hire you and give you a 401k. So now I'm getting a bigger write off in your rental business. Maybe as a real estate professional, you're getting bigger write offs. You're paying yourself to manage your own freaking rentals, getting a write off for it, and then you're putting all the money into Roth and investing in what you know. You could buy more rentals with your Roth people. This is a machine that rich people use all the time. It's insane. This is mind blowing. Because you don't want to be still working your ass off 20 years from now. I want you living on 2 million, $3 million in the bank because you start investing now in real assets, not in stocks, bonds and mutual funds, people. That's the beauty of the mind blowing 401k strategy that's called a side door where we're going to let your rental business hire you through a side company and get you a 401K. Number 12, the one that I love is getting your family involved. For those of you that have children, for those of you who are married now, we can add them to your solo 401k. We can use their Roth IRAs to invest with you. So now you can pool your money to invest. You can fund their Roth IRAs and 401ks. And on this, a big misnomer is a lot of people think, well, I need to put my spouse on payroll because he or she needs Social Security. No, they don't. They're going to get Social Security anyway. It's called the spousal benefit rule. So even if it's a stay at home mom or a stay at home dad, they're going to get Social Security. You don't want to pay into this freaking Social Security hole that you're going to get payments. But it's not, it's barely poverty level. So don't put all this money into salary and paying FICA and Social Security when you're barely going to get maybe two or three grand a month at best. You got to put in money for 30 years to maybe get 2,500amonth. Now, I love the fact Social Security is there, but it's got to be the gravy, the cream on top after you've built a real retirement. So my point is, don't put your spouse on payroll just to build Social Security. Put your spouse on payroll to fund his or her 401k, put the kids on payroll and fund their 401k. Then take the 401k as a family and go invest it in the crap. You know that you're going to get great rates of return, 10, 15 or 20% because you're going to invest in small business and venture capital, syndications, real estate notes, and get greater rates of return than Robin frickin Hood. All right, so that's my 12. I think you'll, we'll list these down in the description. So, so powerful. Tristan, any final questions from our listeners today?
I mean, you just have so many people just praising you right now. You know, you are just contagious. The passion is contagious, Mark.
Oh, thank you people. Oh my gosh, I'm glad you're watching and listening. When this is over, please share it with your friends and family. Family. This is not fringe strategies. This is not high risk strategies. This is Main Street America freaking strategies. And I'm sick of the government trying to treat us like sheep and tell us to do what they want us to do and get follow in line and just invest in Wall street and whatever your employer gives you People you can take control of your own freaking retirement. You can invest in what you know and you can put money away and you can build wealth so you're not relying on crappy Social Security and government assistance and Medicaid and all that people control of your life. So you can do this with a 401k strategy that fits your situation and invest the money and what freaking rocks your world.
Love it. All right, and one last good question here I got from Joe. He's asking a question on chunking. He has a self directed traditional IRA and it's invested in some properties. Can he chunk that but in smaller amounts?
Absolutely. So one thing that I have here, and you'll see that in the, in the video on YouTube on chunking as I go through the different tables of your tax brackets, that's number one. Because you want to know, if you say, mark, I want a chunk, I'm going to go, what tax bracket are you in now? Meaning how much are you going to make this year, married or single? And I'm going to find your bracket. Okay, that's number one. Number two, I'm going to ask you, what state do you live in? Because I need to know what your state tax level is going to be. There's nine states that have no state tax and Arizona is the lowest now of all the states that have tax at 2.5%. So I need to know where you live, what tax rate you have, federal and state. Then we're going to say, okay, you've got say two or three rental properties in a self directed ira. I need to determine what the equity is after loans. So let's say you've got three rentals that are worth 200 grand each. That's 600 grand in fair market value. But you've got a $100,000 loan against each one of them. So 300,000 in loans, 600 in fair market value. So you subtract the loans out because if you sold the properties tomorrow, what would your real net worth be? So you take the fair market value minus all the loans in, your net worth in that LLC owned by your IRAs might be 300,000. And then what we do is we call up your custodian, hopefully directed ira, because we love to take care of you and keep it simple and say I want to convert 10%. So we open up a Roth IRA, you get an appraisal or even a broker opinion, a bpo. And I'd like to do it near the end of the year like do a, do a Roth conversion in December and then turn around and do it in January because we can use your appraisal at the end of the year. And so let's say your net worth or your equity in that LLC owned by your IRAs is 300 grand. You want to chunk 30,000 in December, 30,000 in January. So what we would do is transfer 10% of the LLC to another Roth IRA you own, and then in January, transfer another 10% to a Roth IRA. So at the end of the day, you have an LLC owned by two IRAs come next February. Then we do the same thing next year. Ooh, how much can you chunk this year? Oh, I can chunk 30 and 40 or 50. And then we wait till the end of the year, we do another BPO appraisal, find out what your equity is, and we chunk again. Now we're up to maybe 40% Roth. And if we do that for over four or five years, pretty soon all those rental properties are tax free. Still socking away money into your Roth IRAs along the way. Our goal is to have you with millions of dollars at the end of the process. And it's not a get rich quick scheme, people. It's just being smart and sticking with it. In summary, the American dream is real. Main Street America is the backbone of this country. Capitalism is what's going to provide for your retirement. Not someone else, not Robinhood, not some BS, stock, bond or mutual fund. You can take control of your retirement and invest in what you know best. And you can start building wealth. Now. Take that side hustle and fund your future. Take that little rental property and fund your future and pool your money as a family, as friends, and create LLCs owned by your retirement accounts and freaking change America and take control of Main Street. And let's make this country great. And we can do it all together. Building wealth at the same time, everybody. I'll be here next week. Keep rocking, keep working hard, and I'll be there right alongside you.
