Mark Kohler explains why firearms need special attention in estate planning. He recommends setting up a gun trust or adding a firearms provision to your living trust, and registering high-scrutiny guns directly in the trust's name. This lets family members legally inherit the weapons after your death without breaking federal law.

Firearms can be tricky. What a lot of estate planners will recommend is a gun trust, a trust set up specifically for guns, or having a section in your revocable living trust that designates who receives these guns. And when you go to purchase guns or, and especially firearms that are registered at a higher level of scrutiny, you're going to put them in the name of the trust, register in the name of the trust. This could help your family a lot when they go to transfer firearms after your passing.
