Mark J. Kohler explains how a DBA lets you operate under a different business name without forming a separate company. File one with your county or state to lock down a name for marketing. Hi, Mark Kohler here with another two minute tax and legal tip. Let's talk about using a DBA or Doing Business as Now this is an important tool that many small business owners don't take advantage of. Now at the basic level, let's assume that you're a sole proprietorship and you've just started your business. Well, setting up a DBA is very common where you would go to the local county or state, file some simple paperwork, even do it online and you can register your name. That's called a DBA Doing Business as it's a great way to establish your mark and establish your name. You're not trademarking anything but at least locally in your state, even in particular, the name's locked down. No one else can use it. In fact, you may even align your URL or your website address to coincide with your dba. Now where it gets exciting is is let's set up your corporation, which is what you're going to graduate to, typically an S corporation. And then you could have multiple DBAs going into one parent company. Now I love this because now you can have the diversification of multiple business operations or fronts or even websites, but all the revenue is flowing into one entity and this is where we can do your tax planning and get your asset protection and do a lot of that fun stuff to take your business to the next level. So using a DBA is very common and again it's something that you'll use not for asset protection but for marketing purposes. Then later on we can trademark as you go global. So hope that helps you out and good luck and you can find out more about that and me@markjkohler.com thanks so much and keep living that American dream.
