A short transcript excerpt of Joel Gascoigne reflecting on adopting a long-term approach in building Buffer. He contrasts finite versus infinite games and explains that an early desire for long-term thinking helps make decisions that position a company differently over time.

The long term approach can develop over time. I've certainly become more emboldened in taking the very long term path. At the same time, it probably needs to have some element of that desire early on to enable you to just make some of the decisions and have a little bit of that foresight. The reason that I enjoy taking the long term view is that I think it kind of changes the game. I think there's that concept of the finite versus the infinite game, where the finite game is there's a goal, there's an end to it. On the infinite game is the game is about continuing. And I think that part of the arc of Buffer is also, for me, realizing what are some of those differences in terms of the choices I can make that are very long term, that will put us in a different kind of category.
