The Future of CEO Performance Depends on One Thing: Energy

Mark MacLeod argues a CEO's real asset is personal energy, not time or talent. He's worked with hundreds of CEOs through over $1 billion in exits and says depleted energy leads to poor decisions and company failure. Protect your peak mental hours, cut energy vampires, sleep 7-8 hours, and move daily.

Have you noticed that when your energy is high, you have a good day, and when your energy is low, you have a bad day? This is a universal truth, and yet we don't use it to design our roles, our companies, and our lives. Here's what nobody tells you about being a CEO: you're not actually in the business of building products or managing people or raising capital. You're in the energy business. Every decision you make, every strategy you set, every hard conversation you have with your team All of it costs energy. You're creating, building, growing a thing that didn't exist before. All of this takes energy. And when you run out, your company stops growing. As Naval Ravikant, founder of AngelList, says, "Startups die when founders run out of energy." Check out the link below this video to take my Founder Energy Assessment. See exactly where your energy is today. I'm Mark MacLeod. Since 1999, I've worked with hundreds of CEOs And I can tell you with certainty, the difference between CEOs who scale and CEOs who sell early isn't talent, it's energy management. If this helps you, hit subscribe. I share videos every week on how to scale without burning out. Let me give you something you can use today. Pull out your calendar right now. Look at this week. Notice when you felt most sharp, most creative, most clear. For many people, it's the first 2 to 3 hours after waking up. This is when we're most alert, focused, and creative. Now look at what you schedule during those hours. Is it emails, Slack, back-to-back meetings? You just gave away your most valuable asset. Here's what I want you to do. Block those peak hours. Protect them. Use them for your hardest decisions, your most important strategy work, the thing that only you can do. When I ran an investment bank, I did this. I had no meetings in the mornings. This was my time for deep strategic work. Even when I was working on 6 deals at a time, I kept my morning sacred. If I can do this while running 6 deals, you can too. Keeping those deep work blocks to match your energy, that's energy architecture, and it's the first step to becoming limitless. Now, here's why this matters more than you think. Most CEOs are optimizing for time. They try to pack more into their days, more meetings, more tasks, more productivity hacks. But time's fixed. You get 24 hours, that's it. Everyone has the same amount of time. Energy is variable. You control it. You can have a 12-hour workday and create zero value if your energy is depleted. Or you can have a 6-hour workday and make breakthrough decisions if your energy is high. The math is simple. High energy equals better decisions. Better decisions equal better results. Better results equal compounding growth. Also, as CEO, you set the energetic tone for your company. When your energy is high, everyone feels it. You raise or lower the energy of your company. Low energy equals poor decisions. Poor decisions equals firefighting. And firefighting equals a death spiral. One depleted week can cost you months of momentum. Think about your worst decisions as CEO. The hire you regretted. The strategy pivot that failed. The investor term sheet that you should have walked away from. I guarantee you those decisions were made when you were tired and stressed and running on empty. Here's the truth: you can't outsource CEO decisions. You can't delegate vision setting. You can't hire someone else to make the hard calls. These require your highest energy state. Everything else in your life needs to be designed around protecting that. But here's what most founders do instead. They sacrifice sleep first. I'll sleep when I'm dead. Then they skip exercise. I have no time for the gym. Then they start using caffeine to compensate. Multiple cups a day just to function. This is a losing battle. Each week gets harder. It takes more effort to accomplish the same things. Your clarity drops. Your creativity disappears. Your patience with your team evaporates. And here's the thing that nobody talks about. Your energy sets the tone for the entire company. A depleted CEO creates a depleted culture. Your stress becomes their stress. Your burnout becomes their burnout. Your low energy becomes their low energy. But an energized CEO, that creates an energized team. Faster execution, better results, compounding momentum. Your energy ripples through Everything. Now, let's talk about what actually gives you energy. Sleep is non-negotiable. 7 to 8 hours minimum. Not because it's healthy, but because your brain literally can't make good decisions without it. Movement creates energy. It doesn't deplete it. 30 minutes of exercise gives you more capacity for the day, not less. And recovery isn't a reward for hard work. It's the foundation of high performance. This is the opposite of hustle culture. Hustle culture worships hours worked. Energy culture worships impact created. You are not paid for the time spent. You're paid for the problem solved and energy created. And solving problems requires energy. Here's your energy audit for this week. Track when you're most sharp versus most drained. Notice the patterns. What meetings leave you energized? What tasks deplete you? Identify your energy vampires: certain people, certain types of work, certain environments. Redesign your calendar around this data. Protect your peak hours. Delegate or eliminate the energy vampires. Create space for recovery. This isn't about working less, it's about creating more value with the energy you have. Because here's the reality: startups die when founders run out of energy. I've closed over $1 billion in exits. The number one reason my founders sell isn't because they found a great buyer, it's because they They've burnt out. They hit their limit. They can't go on. Your business grows when you grow. The company can't outpace your energy, your clarity, or your capacity. And so the real work begins with you. Design your life around energy. Protect it. Optimize it. Treat it like the competitive advantage it is. Because when you run out of energy, everything stops. When you master energy, you become limitless.
