Mark Moss lost Bitcoin three different ways: 27 BTC stolen from Bittrex, $40,000 worth from a compromised phone wallet in 2017, and access to funds on his Trezor after a firmware update when he couldn't find his backup seed. Each method of storage failed because of security lapses or lost backups.
I lost a lot of Bitcoin on exchanges. 27 Bitcoin got hacked off of Bittrex. I had $40,000 worth of Bitcoin USD in 2017, so that was 40 Bitcoin taken out of a hot wallet on my phone. I had a Trezor that updated, and when I plugged it in, I had to download the new firmware, but I couldn't find the backup seed phrase for it. So you can lose on a hot wallet, you can lose on exchange, and you can lose on a cold wallet, because I've done all three. Okay, I've done all three.
