Michael Saylor turned MicroStrategy from a $500 million revenue business into a $50 billion company in five years by abandoning sales growth and buying Bitcoin instead. He used equity issuance and credit to accumulate assets, a strategy Mark Moss says could make Saylor the world's richest man.
Michael Saylor will be probably the richest man in the world. He ran a company called MicroStrategy, which was a software company. They compete against Microsoft. He went on Jordan Peterson and he said, I spent a decade, I did 10 trips around the world. I hired these people, I fired these people, I bought this business, I sold that business, I launched a new software, and nothing I could do could increase my revenue.
I had tried every conventional thing imaginable, and 10 years later, the company was still about a $500 million company.
So what he decided to do was rather than trying to continue to build his revenue, what I'm gonna do is try to build my asset base. In 2020, when he gave up trying to grow revenue, the company was valued at $3.6 billion. Within 5 years, it was worth $50 billion because he stopped trying to grow his revenue and instead he started to grow his assets. How did he grow his assets? Well, he used two different tools. He used equity and credit, the same two tools that every single person has access to.
