Mark Moss argues that asking how many bitcoins you need to retire is the wrong question. The problem isn't which asset to hold, but that you're planning to sell a volatile, non-cash-generating investment to pay living expenses. Bitcoin's future value is too uncertain to make any fixed target reliable.
How much Bitcoin do I need to retire? Do I need 10 Bitcoin? Will 1 Bitcoin be enough? 6.15 Bitcoin? But the problem with that question is it assumes that you're going to have to sell your Bitcoin in order to live. So what would the valuation of that Bitcoin be by the time I'm ready to retire? And will it be enough to fund my lifestyle? And I cross my fingers and I hope that I die before I run out of money. The problem is that what you did is you just swapped the asset. Instead of the mutual fund, you got Bitcoin. You got the right asset, but it's the wrong system.
