A senior developer with 7 years of experience bombed an interview after relying too heavily on AI. A Microsoft study found measurable drops in cognitive abilities among knowledge workers using generative AI, raising questions about whether we're outsourcing our thinking.

A few days ago I was talking about me coming back from Florida and talking with someone who interviewed a senior developer with seven years of experience. The problem was that they completely bombed the interview because they couldn't think for themselves anymore. They used AI and LLMs so much recently that they lost the ability to think critically. A lot of people replied and talked about hey, this person has seven years of experience. There's no way that they can lose that amount of knowledge in such a short period of time. Or well guess what? A study just came out from Microsoft talking about the impact of generative AI on critical thinking and they noticed a significant reduction in cognitive abilities after using LLMs. Specifically with knowledge workers, recognizing or remembering facts, terms or even basic concepts and answers were lost in a very short period of time. So by using and relying on AI, your brain is essentially atrophying. So be extremely careful and critical of where you use AI and how often you use it.
