Welcome, dear listeners, to another episode of Living in Your Power, the podcast where we journey through self-empowerment and finding our authentic selves. I'm your host, Marleen Greenleaf, and today I want to delve briefly into another crucial topic: breaking free from a scarcity mindset. So let's explore how this mindset holds us back and how we can liberate ourselves from its grasp. Scarcity mindset. Now, this is a term we often hear, but what does it really mean? It's a belief that there is never enough, whether it's finances, resources, opportunities, or even happiness. Now, the term was originally coined to describe a specific type of anxiety and cognitive stress experienced by people whose incomes were below the federal poverty threshold. And in a 2017 experiment in the research article Poverty Impedes Cognitive Function, researchers found that the distress over not having enough money or resources to get by had a negative effect on people's mental state. And ultimately, they suggested that someone's hyperfixation or worry over what they lack could lead to poor decision-making and higher stress. So now, this mindset, it can lead to fear, stress, and a life of constant competition and comparison. So continuous thinking like this can convince someone that their life is truly empty. Now, there was a time when I too felt constantly overwhelmed by the fear of not having or being enough. And this fear was not just about material things. It extended to my self-worth and my capabilities. But the moment I recognized and acknowledged this mindset, it began my journey to overcome it. So now, in my opinion, the very first step in breaking free from a scarcity mindset is awareness. Recognize and accept that this mindset is influencing your thoughts and actions. Awareness is the key to change. Now let's discuss how we can shift from a— from scarcity to abundance. First and foremost, we need to practice gratitude. Focusing on what we have rather than what we lack will foster a sense of abundance. Next, we need to challenge that scarcity belief. You have to ask yourself, is this thought based on fact or is it based on fear? Then surround yourself with positive influences. Find people who embody an abundance mindset as they can inspire and motivate you to shift your own perspective. Another important aspect is to redefine what success and happiness means to you. Yes, scarcity often comes from societal definitions of success. So by creating our own definitions, we free ourselves from the constraints of comparison. So as we wrap up today's episode, I want you to reflect on areas in your life where a scarcity mindset might be lurking. Okay, how can you shift to a mindset of abundance in these areas? I want you to remember that the journey from scarcity to abundance is not just about changing your thoughts, it's about changing your life.
