Introductory segment of a video series on improving handwriting presented by Mary Kostka of Ohana OT. The speaker frames handwriting as a complex, integrated skill involving psychological, sensory, motor, cognitive, and language-development components and previews that the series will address common handwriting problems and practical solutions drawn from her nearly three decades of experience.
Aloha and welcome to how to Improve Handwriting. Mary Koska here with Ohana ot and I am so excited to get this video series going. So let's get started.
So handwriting is complicated. A lot of people just don't realize how complicated it is because we just develop the skill and it becomes automatic. But there is so much to it to make it an automatic skill. So I am thrilled to share with you nearly three decades of what is in my brain, what has worked, and to share it with you what has worked with children, adolescents, adults at all different skill levels. So why is it so complicated? Well, there are many different components to handwriting. We have a psychological component. It's an extension of ourselves. We have a sensory component. We have a motor component. We have a cognitive thinking component. We have a language development component. And it's an integrated skill. Everything has to come together and work together. And so when there is a lot of problems with developing handwriting, it's really usually more of a symptom of something underlying that's just not working right. So we are going to, in this video series, take some of the most common problems that I have seen that people struggle with with handwriting, and what solutions I have found that work the best. So let's just jump right in and get started. And I am so excited to be able to provide this for you. Aloha.
