Matt Britton explains why Google, Apple, Verizon, and AT&T dominate: they provide actual utility and access, not just brand preference. The brands winning today solve problems people use every day.
Utility is defining the everyday brand. When I look at the top 10 brands that most valuable that was recently announced, what really is fascinating to me is you don't see a Hershey's Chocolate or Ford Motors or a Coca Cola. You don't actually see brands where brand preference actually matters. You're not going to have Coke or Pepsi, because in reality, for consumers, it really doesn't have brands that are winning, or the brands actually provide access to the stuff that consumers want, whether it's data through Verizon or AT&T, or whether it's access to knowledge and information through a Google or access to the world through an Apple. Those are the brands that are actually winning. The utilitarian brands.
