Matt Britton Talks About The Xbox Launch on The Daily Show 12/14/05

Dimitri Martin satirizes holiday shopping culture by framing the Xbox 360 as the season's must-have gift. Marketing executives and Best Buy employees explain its appeal: it's the only next-gen console available, and it's positioned as family entertainment, despite the dark humor about in-game violence that undercuts the pitch.
The program. Once again, the holidays are upon us. And with them come the season's hottest trends. For more we turn to the Daily Show's own resident trend spotter, Dimitri Martin. Every year one hot product heats up the holiday hot list to become the hottest hot gift for young people. Which is hot. The first Christmas it was frankincense. That was basically just like a glorified scented candle situation. During the dark ages, nonviolent death was the hot gift. The it gift during the Renaissance was the puffy gay shirt. So what's this year's must have gift? Check this out. The new Xbox360 is the must have. An Xbox360 which is the hot toy. One of the holiday season's hottest items. The Buz around. Xbox 360. Xbox 360. The most anticipated new product a holiday must have. The Xbox 360 is the hottest gift this year. That last guy is me, a professional trend spotter. And after finding out what from the news, I went to find out why from the experts at Mr. Youth Marketing. The Xbox is so popular because it's the only next generation gaming console available on retail this holiday season. Can you do that in a more useful way? You gotta get this new jam. The Xbox. Awesome. There can only be one it gift. It is kind of it. It's the number one gift. Right. There could be many must have gifts and even more hot gifts. So all its are must haves. But in order to be a hot gift, it must be it. Correct. Sweet. So youthy. So what is the Xbox 360? Well, it's a box made out of plastic and metal and wires. And people really want it because it's part of a hot cycle, a term we commonly use in the industry. I'm not really familiar with the term hot cycle. It's not really commonly used in our industry. Mr. Youth was being a dick. It was time to move on. So I went to the best place to investigate. Buying Best Buy. Do you think the Xbox 360 can bridge the gap between parents that don't pay attention to their kids and the kids they don't pay attention to? Well, I don't know if they don't pay attention to them, but yes, it will. There's a lot of family functions and family game that is becoming the hot hot night right now for families. Awesome. If you're mad at your kids, you can kill them without really killing them. Kill your kids. If mom and dad want to do that. Mom and dad have to buy the games in our stores because we do check ID on M rated games. Do you ever check ID for older people? So you're like, hey, dude, you're 40. You know what? Time to get a girlfriend. That's when I realized the Xbox 360 isn't just another video game system that's being released to force consumers into buying a whole new system when they just bought one over the summer. It's actually a way to bring people together. Game on my system, I have a game where you can kill hookers. You'd be able to kill hotter hookers, you think with the system. How's that feel? Boom. So do you work here often? Is that it? Come on. I want to kill a South American hooker. You think maybe I can just get one of those shirts? That seems pretty nice cotton. They are nice, but you know, you have to have certain values to be able to wear a blue shirt at Best Buy. Yeah, you just need a torso. If only I had a torso. I needed a minute to cool off, gather my thoughts, and re spot the heart of this trend. It is definitely the it gift for every family. He's right. This year, Christmas is all about the Xbox 360 and family.
