Ep50: 2024 Reflection & A Step By Step Process To Set Goals And Achieve Them In 2025
1 Jan 2025 · 20 min
Matt Dart closed his gym and moved coaching online in 2024, scaling to six figures while helping other PTs do the same. For 2025 he's targeting 50k a month revenue with 56 clients, 10k Instagram followers, and three family holidays. He walks through his goal-setting framework: 12-month targets broken into quarterly and monthly milestones, tracked and rewarded along the way.
What is going on, everyone? Matt here from the PT Profit, Leverage and Lifestyle show. Hope everyone had an amazing Christmas at the time of this recording. It's currently New Year's Eve. So I hope everyone is super pumped for a new year. And I thought I would start this podcast with a little bit of reflection on how 2024 went for me in my business and my family. Show some of the lessons and the wins, and I'm going to, I'm going to show you how I plan my year in advance so you guys can do the same thing. So let's start with a little bit of. Oh, actually, let's start with hope you guys had an amazing Christmas with family and friends and hope you had some time off and not hope you didn't have to work through the entire month of December. But let's get into some reflection on my end. So I actually took a little bit of time and went through my social media for the last 12 months and picked out a few of the, the highlights. Not that I don't remember, but it's just good to do a little bit more reflection. So I've got about five or six big, big things that happened. Like there was. It was a huge year for me in terms of pivoting, transitioning, and you guys would have all seen that unfold. I pretty much share everything that happens in my life, or most of it. At least a couple of highlights for me. Obviously, my son was born, born in June, so he's. He's six months old now, little Archie. So, you know, Winter's two and a half now and Archie's six months old. So one of our goals was to have a healthy, healthy baby. We've had a couple of hospital trips actually with, with little Archie, but overall pretty good. And by the way, I hope this is insightful because I'll go through all my kind of reflections and just, just to show you kind of what's possible in such a short amount of time. I know obviously 12 months is a long time, but in reality it's actually, it's a long time and a short time at the same time. Depends on your perspective. So Archer was born. I launched my podcast last year. Oh, sorry. This year, at the start of the year I've done. This will be episode 50 today. Today is episode 50. Oh, how good. Episode 50 today. So I've done a podcast pretty much every single week since the start of the year without failed, connecting with amazing people all across Australia, all across the world, and super pumped to take that to the next level. Next year I closed down my gym or sold everything in my gym and I closed it down. You guys would have already known. I've talked a fair bit about the reasons why I closed down the gym. Obviously wasn't fulfilled anymore having I didn't really need it anymore and I wasn't even, I wasn't even there really. In fact, I pretty much just opened the gym for spite. If you guys haven't watched that episode, I opened the gym right beside Anytime Fitness, the gym that I got kicked out of because I basically terminated one of my staff members. But that's. Go back and watch that episode if you haven't watched it already. So yeah, close everything down or sold everything in the. In the gym. Close it down. In March, I moved my face to face business entirely to online in the month of October. I believe I wanted to do it by the end of the year so the deadline was today, but I managed to get it done in October thanks to my mentors Jake and Jade for pushing me to do it earlier, which enabled me to go all in on business coaching. Business coaching is doing really, really well. Growing that to a six figure business myself, which is awesome. And I've also helped multiple personal trainers hit a six figure income as well, which is the most important part. I got into business coaching to help other PTs experience what I've been able to experience. Next year it's all going to be around hybrid coaching and creating more leverage and time back for people. One of the biggest things that I wanted to do this year is have more time with my family. I used to do, you know, 40, 50 sessions a week with PT, you know, doing the early mornings, doing the late nights, you know, working Saturdays as well sometimes and don't do that anymore. I'm home every single morning, I'm home every single night. I don't have any late nights, I don't work weekends. I have a very leveraged business model which I'm super, super proud of. Like even yesterday everyone knows I'm a massive cricket fan. You didn't watch the Boxing Day test match the day five, Australia got to win, got to pretty much watch that the entire day. Like if I was still doing pt, I wouldn't be down a. Sorry. If I was still doing face to face sessions or even working another job, I wouldn't be able to do that. It's little things, little things in life. So yeah, a lot of pivoting, a lot of big changes this year which I'm super proud of. As I said, it's all been around leverage time back doing the stuff that I like doing. The next step for me is going to be about growing my business coaching the business coaching business to. And I'll share some of my goals as well for, for this year after next year, sorry, but it's to, it's to grow that, that income to where I had my personal training business, which was about 60k a month. I want to do that with the business coaching side of things now, but of course having having more of a leveraged model. So that's a little bit of reflection on my end. A couple of key lessons that I learned from this year is it's completely fine to pivot in a different direction and you're only one step away from a completely different life. I made a decision at the start of last year that I wanted to have more time at home with the family now that I had the Archie come along, our son. And yeah, I made a very clear plan really the last 18 months, to be honest, ever since winter was born two and a half years ago, I wanted to spend more time at home and not have to go into the, go into the gym, spending most of the day at the gym and having to come home late at night sometimes when the kids are asleep. So yeah, big lesson was just you're one decision away from a completely different life. And then the biggest lessons throughout the whole year is around leverage hybrid coaching, using AI to your advantage to be more productive with your time, delegating tasks and then also hiring a va. All my social media content is done by my va, so shout out to her. But on la, I know you'd be listening, so that's been a massive breath of fresh air on my end. And yeah, let's get into some goals for this year. I did write down my goals just before I wanted to share a couple of them with you and then I'm going to show you how I plan for next year as well. And by the way, I wrote all my goals down here and you can see there's, there's some ticks, but there's also some things that we didn't get done, which is completely fine as well, by the way. You don't need to be too hard on yourself, but it's always good to reflect on what you've done for the year and just see what works, what didn't work and reevaluate what you need to improve on. The big mistake that I made is I didn't really read this stuff consistently and I'll show you a way that you guys can fix that for next year for 20, 25. So a couple of things that we set out to do is obviously close down the gym, close down the face to face pt. Jess had some awesome wins with making profit in her ass salon when she wasn't even there, which is awesome. Archie's now in daycare from three months old, which is awesome. And we had a couple of family holidays as well. And we upgraded Jess's car. Beautiful. Happy days. All right, let's get into some new goals that I'm going to achieve this year. Now these are, I haven't expanded on these too much. I'm not going to share too much of the financial ones apart from the business. Keep that one private for now. But 50k per month is, is the goal. I need to get 56 clients, which is I need to get 10, 10 new clients. Let me work this out. 39 new clients. I need an extra three and a half new clients per month. So basically four new clients a month is what I need to do to achieve that. So couple other goals. I want to get my Instagram account to 10k followers. I want to use more AI and more leverage in my. More AI to achieve more leverage in my business. I want to become a master at marketing. I want to master Facebook ads or meta ads or even ads in general. Haven't quite cracked it just yet. I've been doing it for a couple of months now, but it's one of the biggest challenges that I've faced right now is I still haven't been able to get a good amount of return on investment from my ads and it just takes a bit of time. Like I'm working with some mentors that are helping help me with this type of stuff now. But it's one thing that I still haven't been able to quite crack yet. Once I crack the code for that, I think the business is going to explode. Three family holidays this year. We've already got Fiji booked in and Queenstown, Japan is going to be in January 2026. And then it looks like we're going to be having a cricket trip over to England which is going to be pretty cool. So we'll probably spend a bit of extra time in, in, in Europe. Investments in self development. Of course I, I've got a, another mentor now which is just going really, really well. So I'm super keen to keep crushing that. Date nights every single month. I did have that on our plan for this year. Didn't really achieve that that well, to be honest. We did Some date nights. But these, these to be better. That's a, that's a big lesson. We need to prioritize, prioritize that and then just reducing my screen time a little bit more as well by an extra 10%. So there are a couple of goals that I've kind of set in stone. Like there'll be more goals that I go into a bit more detail on, but that's kind of what I've. That's my first draft. But let's go into how to actually make your goals. So what I want you guys to do, I want you to do this on Google Doc or even put it in your notes and I want you to. Most of you guys are obviously running businesses so we want to have some business goals and personal goals separated out. I want you guys to write down the following headings. This is going to be 12 month goals and then we're going to break them down into three month and six month goals. You always want to break them down. Okay, so you're going to have financial, you're going to have business, you're going to have personal, you have relationship or relationships and then you're going to have family if you've got kids. They're the categories that I want you to have separate things for in each one. This is just the stuff that I focus on. Okay, so there's plenty of different ways that you can do this. This is just the one that works for me. So I want you to go through financial goals whether you have property, shares or whatever investments you have. What do you want that to look like at the end of 2025? Write that down. Or if you want to buy a certain amount of shares or buy a certain amount of property, the business, business goals and client goals. So how much income per month do you want to be doing by the end of the year? How many clients you want to have by the end of the year? And just a couple of other things. I did one on social media and I did one on the area of focus that I want to focus on for this year. So you could have like sales, you could have marketing, you could have retention, have systems have like a theme that you want to really focus on for the year. For me it's marketing and specifically around ads, personal stuff. This is around holidays and could also be in the family part of it. So we've got three international holidays this year, which is friggin epic by the way. You know, have some goals around spending time out of the business as well. You guys know I'm all about leverage and spend spending time doing the things that you love. And I love my business by the way. I love working, but I also love holidays. I also love spending time with my family. I also love and soon to be, hopefully this year. Want to buy like a jet Ski or something. I want to, want to go out on the water a little bit more. And then relationships. What does that look like? Is it date nights? Is it, is it weekends away? Is it quarterly domestic holidays, for example, what does that look like? And then for the family, like how much time you want to spend with the family? Like I got a lot of my clients at the moment that want to have Fridays off. Heck, you could even have Mondays off and Fridays off. Or even you might even have Mondays off. Everyone else, everyone else has to go to work on Monday. But you know what? I'm going to take Mondays off. You have that control on your business. So whatever you want to do, this is the time to set the goal and then we reverse engineer with how to actually make that work. I've got heaps of clients that we've been able to have Fridays off now every single, every single week to have a three day weekend without fail. Because we have the systems and the structure in place to be able to do that. Now once you've done those things, we're going to break them down into six month goals and three month goals. So you can also do this with your clients as well. I'm doing this with all my online clients is I'm booking out a call and going through their 12 month goals. So I'm going to set them up for success for the next 12 months, break down the six months, break down the three months. Okay, so you got the 12 month goals now. Now I want you to make basically especially the financial ones, break that down into what you need to be at in six months time. Then the same thing for three months. Same thing with clients, same thing with, for example, my followers. If I want to be at 10k followers, what do I need to be at in June, July? And then you can actually measure that and track that throughout the year. And this is the part where most people go wrong. They don't actually track the progress throughout the year. Realistically, your goals, you should be setting goals no more than three months. You set goals just for 12 months. You're not going to look at them like if I said goals at the start of January this year, I would have still been talking about face to face pt. I wouldn't even be talking much about the Business coaching and I pivoted in March. So make sure you just do three months at a time. So because a lot of things can happen in three months. So where are we at? So if you've done 12 months, break them down to six months, break them down to three months and then your three month goal. Three month goals, sorry. I suggest putting that into a vision board that you have as a screenshot, as your screensaver. My vision board is my screensaver every single day, multiple times per day. I'm looking at, whoops if you can't see that. There it is. Every single day. I'm looking at that. To give you some context, if you want me to send you through my template, let me know. Actually I'll quickly show you here. Just made this up in Canva. So it's just for the family be present. I've got some goals financially in there, like 50k a month for the business, 56 clients share portfolio. I've got holidays that I've put some images from those destinations in there and then the personal growth, the master mastering, master of marketing, I've put that in there, I've put in leverage in there and AI robot and I put a picture of me and my wife relationship for the date nights monthly. So I've got that as my screensaver. So I'm looking at that every single day. So it's going to consistently remind me what I need to do. This is how you're going to stay focused on your goals. So I want you to do that, the three month goals. So whatever that is, you know, if you want to get to 2k per week within three months, put that on the goal. And then what do you do when you hit the goal? You reward yourself. Make sure you reward yourself when you hit the goal, otherwise you just, you just move the goal to a different goal post and there's no reward. And you don't really get the happiness that you, that you wanted or that you, that you strive for. So that's essentially how I do my planning for, for each year. Yeah. At the end of every three months you reassess, you reassess where you're at. After the three months you go, cool. Tick or cross, Done, not done or in progress. Then you reevaluate. Okay, cool. I actually really need to really focus on this now because this hasn't really worked very well. Or let's say for example, for me, I think I've got like 1800 followers on Instagram, like not very much. Just say I'm at 2,200, which is slow if I want to get to 10k, so I need to double down on the Instagram stuff. I'm only going to identify that if I'm tracking the metrics every quarter, every three months. You can even do it every month if you really want. Like at the moment, our VA does this every single month for us. You might do the same thing. You might do it every quarter. Up to you guys. The key, the key part is you need to track the metrics. If you don't track the metrics, you don't know what's going on in your personal life, in your business and your finances, etc, you need to track the stuff. So hope that was valuable. If it was valuable, send me a message. Send me a dm. I always like to see what takeaways are and it's always good feedback as well. But I hope you have an amazing New Year's. At the time of this recording is New Year's Eve, so enjoy. This should come out on New Year's Day. So cheers to the best 2025 and I wish you all the best with your business. And as always, if you do need a hand with anything, just reach out. I am actually doing a a case study with a couple of people, probably five people, for the month of January. So if you are interested in the case study about getting three to five new clients in January, testing out a couple of different strategies, then send me a message and we'll see if we can tease something up together. Apart from that, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Peace out. I'll see you in the next training episode or podcast episode rather.
