Chapters
Ransomware is a rising threat to organizations connected to the internet and all the products, services, and critical infrastructures that depend on those organizations. And it can and will eventually impact everyone. The upcoming Ransomware Explained video series will help shed light on the aspect of cybercrime and hopefully spur some interesting discussions. We have witnessed a A growing menace that has stopped national fuel distribution, shut down entire city governments, it's disrupted transportation systems, and it's shown no mercy by attacking hospitals, schools, food supply chains. Attackers have been bold enough to demand ransoms from government and even law enforcement agencies. And this is only the beginning. To defeat ransomware, we all need a better understanding of the threat. Communication is the first step that can lead to collaboration. In the coming weeks, I will be developing the Ransomware Explained video series that discusses many of the strategic aspects of ransomware. Um, I'll be covering topics like the the increasing costs and impacts, uh, understanding the attackers, the three fundamental ways of stopping cyberattacks, ransomware's criminal advantage, uh, the adapting tools and tactics, how attribution of ransomware attacks is often pretty flawed and incorrect, why ransomware is targeting critical infrastructures, and perhaps most importantly, that it is time that we all choose a path to either protect ourselves individually or to work to end ransomware collectively. And let me know if there's a specific ransomware topic you're interested in and would like to see me cover. Now, ransomware is often oversimplified. These attacks have been around for decades and only increased even in the face of evolving security controls. They continue to thrive. Attackers are creative and adaptive, and many are absolute professionals. The most successful ransomware outfits are operated with a clear business model and structure, possessing engineering, marketing, operations, customer support, billing, and even attracting affiliates to grow their market. These digital extortionists are persistent, resilient, and have the threat that they are representing— the threat that they bring to the table is growing. I will be posting the Ransomware Explained videos on the Cybersecurity Insights channel. I'll put the link in the, description below, and everyone is welcome to watch, comment, and discuss the topic. We are all stronger when we work together. That will be the key in how we defeat ransomware. It'll be through cooperation, or without it, it'll be our Achilles heel that will allow us to be continually victimized. So join me, and I look forward to our collaborative discussions.
