Some Justice for Phone Scammers

Hitesh Patel ran an Indian phone-scam operation that stole $60 million from Americans through fake IRS and immigration calls. He evaded U.S. authorities for years until Singapore arrested him. A federal court convicted him and sentenced him to 20 years in prison with $9 million in restitution ordered.

It's a good day for those who have been involved in phone scams. Well, not if your name's Hitesh Patel. Hitesh has been a naughty boy. In fact, he's been running one of these scam outfits based out of India, and they're the ones that are creating these calls and scamming people out of money. You know the ones I'm talking about, the ones that claim to be an agent from the Internal Revenue Service and you haven't paid your taxes and they're gonna come arrest you. Or from the immigration service and they're gonna deport you unless you pay money. All scams. And unfortunately, it's been fleecing Americans upwards of $60 million, this particular organization. Now, the US Department of Justice has been looking to get their hands on Hitesh for a while. In fact, they targeted about 60 people within that organization. They've already captured and sentenced over 20 of them to jail. But Hitesh, he's been tough to get a hold of. He's been hiding out in India and kind of protected there. And unfortunately for him, when he decided to go over to Singapore, our friends over in Singapore were more than happy to arrest him and extradite him back to the United States, where he's now been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in a US prison. So I hope that he spends some quality time with American felons in our prison system for the next 20 years. And also he will be having to pay out restitution, about $9 million to those victims. Now, it's little recourse. It's a lot too late, unfortunately, for many. But the fact is, it's a good day that this guy was captured and some justice was brought to bear. Now, the US Department of Justice has been really going after a lot of these phone scammers, um, and it's been one of the biggest complaints to the FTC from Americans. And this particular firm was targeting Americans with these types of scams. So this isn't the first, it won't be the last, and sadly, it probably won't even put a dent in them. Um, these type of calls are still happening, these type of scams are still prolific, and even by Hitesh's account, upwards of over $60 million potentially that his organization was able to pull in, and that's probably lowballing it. Criminals tend not to like to admit how much they've impacted victims. So again, this is really— it's a moral victory that some justice was made. So thank you, the US Department of Justice, for continuing to pursue him, and please, please continue to go after more of them. My phone continues to ring every single day with all manner of different scams, and Robocalls, all sorts of different things. Nobody likes this. We have to clean this up. This is horrible for Americans and people all over the world.
