How do you remove mold from fabrics?

Matt Kelly, the Mold Man, walks through ways to clean moldy fabrics: borax, vinegar, ammonia, EC3, or dry cleaning. Success depends on how contaminated the item is and how sensitive you are to mold. Some things can't be saved no matter what you try.

Lisa's asking, is there a way to remove mold mildew from fabrics? So mildew is a fungus. Mold is fungus. So from fabrics, if you're, if you're talking about clothes, I mean, yes, you can remove mold from clothes, but it's dependent on how toxic, how mold laden they are. And then it comes down to how sensitive you are. So some people can clean their clothes enough that they can wear them. Other people can't get them clean enough that they can wear them no matter what they do, no matter how many loads with Borax and EC3 and ammonia and vinegar they do, or even dry cleaner. Dry cleaning can help some, but. But for some people it's not enough. Plus dry cleaning adds new toxic chemicals as well, which could be part of the problem. So if you, but if it's something small, like say you had something that wasn't clothes, I guess you could still do it with clothes. I mean, you can literally soak them in ammonia. Okay. I mean, you could submerse it and leave it for a period of time and then put it out in the sun to dry and to air out. So there's a lot of things you can do. But like I mentioned earlier, borax, vinegar, EC3, ammonia in the wash for fabrics is a good option for clothes. Or, you know, if you really need to get something singular, just dialed in and really focus on it, then you could submerse it right in ammonia for a period of time. But like I said, it works for some people, it doesn't for others. It comes down to your own sliding scale of sensitivity. As I cover in my mold proof Your Home Masterclass moldproofyourhome.com what works for one person may not be working for another person because their molds may be different, their mycotoxins may be different. One person may have histamine, a mast cell, multiple chemical sensitivity. Another person may not. There's a lot of variables in here, but those are your best options when dealing with fabrics.
