How long to wait after remediation to do an ERMI?

Matt Kelly explains when to test for mold after remediation. You need at least 5 milligrams of dust for an ERMI, which typically takes 2 to 3 months to accumulate after cleaning. He recommends hot fog over cold fog for a final treatment because it penetrates deeper.

Hey, Dominica. Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you're appreciating the group. And you wanted to ask two things. We're currently remediating our new home. We have studied, read books, how to remediate. You're taking it on yourselves. Be careful. I hope if you're handy people and you do the research, you can do it. But most people that DIY make it worse. But it sounds like you guys are confident and I hope you're confident for the right reason that you are handy and can do this stuff. We're being meticulous. How long after fogging and small particle cleaning can we do an ERMI to see if it's safe? All right, well, it comes down to how long is it going to take to get enough dust for the ermi. So you need at least 5 milligrams of dust on your ermi. So on average, like when I did our house here when we moved in is two months. Okay, so in about 60 days I had enough dust. Just make sure you don't send in one without enough dust. We want at least the 5 milligrams. You want it to look really dusty and dirty. And for anybody watching, try to remember, put a link to my ERMI page because I have a video on how to do an ermi, what not to do, what to do, how to collect. And then I show me collecting in our house on how to do an ermi. Sounds like you already know though, so that's good. But it just comes down to dust. So, you know, check on top of your windows and door frames and on top of the picture frames and mirrors and stuff. And when it looks like you've got enough, then do a collection. But on average, two to three months is how long it takes to get fresh dust after you've done a complete cleaning of everything. Okay, make sure you clean your H Vac. Have your H Vac cleaned as well. You want everything cleaned all at once. So that's number one. Also, is decon the best stuff to fog the house with? Well, it can be good for some people. Some people that are very sensitive can't use decon 30 because of how strong it is. It's also a cold fog, not a hot fog. Hot fog, in my opinion, is going to do a little more. It's going to go deeper and clean more. But a cold fog is easier and cheaper to do and you can keep up with them. But if you're doing a final fogging after remediation, I would do a hot fog and I'll put a link here for that because it literally just hangs in the air for hours as opposed to a cold fog which is bigger droplets and they just fall quickly. All right. So good luck on your remediation. I hope you nail this and you don't have any problems and you follow all the guidelines. I'm glad you're reading lots of books and I'm sure you'll nail this alright. Hope that helps.
