Matt Kelly explains how antioxidants work together in your body. Vitamin E protects fats in cell membranes, while vitamin C and glutathione work as a team: vitamin C neutralizes radicals and gets oxidized, then glutathione reduces it back so it can work again.
Chapters
The base strata of redox in your body involves vitamin C, glutathione, and vitamin E molecules, so there's a family. Vitamin E takes care of your fat-soluble areas such as your cholesterol and your cell membranes and places where there's fat. Glutathione and vitamin C take care of the water-soluble areas, but here's the trick that they do. If an oxidant, a radical goes and it bumps into vitamin C, vitamin C will go from ascorbate, ascorbic acid, and it will become oxidized to dehydroascorbate, and it will take the radical, the danger away from that molecule, so that's great, but now it's oxidized, but then what happens is glutathione will come alongside and re-reduce the vitamin C, so they work with each other, and vitamin C in turn can do that for glutathione.
