Doctors once considered prescribing vitamin D malpractice. Now they test levels routinely and recognize it as a hormone crucial for immune function, not just bone health. Research completely reversed the medical consensus.

Vitamin D has really gone through a big transition in medicine, you know, not in reality because it's always been vitamin D, but over the years of medicine. Back when I was in medical school, if you gave somebody a supplement with vitamin D in it that had more than a tiny amount, it was considered medical malpractice, considered very dangerous. And then all of a sudden, all of this research starts coming out and people are giving bigger doses of vitamin D, they're checking vitamin D levels, or— Oh gee, everyone's too low and they're raising their vitamin D levels up. It turns out, if you look at vitamin D, it's not really a vitamin, it's a hormone, and it's a hormone that's involved in many more things than just your bone health. Now, we think of it for bone health, it's good for that. Nowadays, we hear about it a lot with immune health, and that's very true.
