Autophagy is your cells' cleaning process for removing waste and toxins, but eating constantly keeps it switched off. You need about 12 to 14 hours without food to turn it back on, which is why fasting periods matter.

Autophagy is the natural way that our cells clean themselves out of metabolic junk and other toxic material. And it turns out that our body has these signaling mechanisms where if we're constantly putting calories into our body and it's going from the minute we wake up to the minute we go to bed and there's not enough of a break, we don't turn the switch on that turns this cell cleaning mechanism autophagy back on. And so you might say, okay, time restricted, I know I'm gonna be asleep for part of it, but how much more time do I have to not eat, right? Well, in order to get to autophagy, most of the research shows it's somewhere between 12 and 14 hours.
