What to do about mold growing around my window?

Matt Kelly explains that mold around windows means moisture is getting in somewhere, usually through bad seals or condensation. You need to find the source, remove the moldy materials, and keep indoor humidity below 50% with a dehumidifier. Sprays won't fix it.

Oh, Sandra, this doesn't sound good. You're asking. You want to know how to target mold and window casings and spreading to drywall. Also, how to find the right professionals to help me properly. All right, so I just did video number 130, and it's about how to qualify a mold inspector, how to choose a mold inspector, how to know that you're getting someone that's going to offer you value and do what they need to do to help find the sources. Okay, so search for video number 130. Okay. And that will help you with that. But your first part, how to. Want to know how to target molded window casings and spreading the drywall. So you. Obviously you have a moisture issue. Okay. Whether it's just coming, whether it's old wood windows in a farmhouse and the moisture is coming in around the window, or whether the house is just very damp or there's mold coming down that wall for some reason, that's what you need to find out. Why is it happening? Because as for dealing with it, that material all needs removed. Okay? Proper remediation is removal of affected material. It's not spraying a magic spray on there. And then the mold all just dies and mycotoxins disappear and everything's fine. It's about removing effective material. So you need to find out why. Like, go on Amazon, buy a hygrometer to check the humidity in your home. Get a couple of them, set them up in different areas of the home where what's. What moisture is feeding all this? Is it just condensation off the windows or is the. Is the moisture high? You may need a dehumidifier or multiple to get your moisture down below 50% in the home, but that is. That is a problem. And when things get really bad around windows, it can get worse. And because at that windowsill, if it's not cocked well up against the window and there's a slight crack there, sometimes you can see it like, you know, a 32nd of an inch or a 16th, and then you get condensation or moisture there. And if it drips off the edge of the window and goes down to hit the sill, but there's a crack there. People get water right there under their window going down into the wall. And when you get water down there and then there's going to be mold spores in there, you just can't. People can get this horrible mold growth under windows. It's a known spot because of the moisture that comes down. If your windows don't have good seals and they start sweating a lot, and it can create this horrible environment for mold. So check video number 130, get a good inspector in, check your own humidity in the home, get the humidifiers as needed, get down under 50%, and also do an URMI on the home and figure out is this a source or is there other mold colonies growing in the house whose spores are just landing on this moisture around the window? Okay, to feed that problem. So I'll put the link to the ERMI here as well. But you've got a lot of things going on here, a lot of steps you can do, and I hope this helps.
