What’s the difference between the ERMI and EMMA?

EMMA tests 10 molds plus 16 mycotoxins in one panel. ERMI tests 36 molds and can add a separate mycotoxin test. Matt Kelly usually prefers ERMI for broader mold detection, but EMMA works if you want mycotoxins included.

Connie just asked a great question here about testing, and it is. Matt, can you please explain the difference between the EMMA and the ermi? These are weird names. If you don't know if this is your first day coming to this group and inquiring about mold, you'd be like, what in the world is Matt talking about? But those are just acronyms for mold tests in the home. Testing your home for mold. Now, the EMMA is the test that checks for both mold and mycotoxins, which is a toxic metabolite from mold, whereas the ERMI just checks for mold, but the EMMA is just checking for 10 molds and 16 mycotoxins, where the ERMI is checking for 36 molds. Now, the ERMI, anyone that does an URMI, a lab that does an URMI, or at least as far as I know, and with envirobiomics that I use, you can add on a separate mycotoxins test. So you're checking for mold and mycotoxins, but with the emma, you're kind of doing half and half, which is nice. But at the same time, I like to see all the mold. So most people that I'm dealing with come to me with an ERMI or I recommend an urmi. Some people add on the mycotoxins test, too. A lot of times, no one's testing the mycotoxins in their home or just looking at the molds that produce toxic mycotoxin. So if they have a house with a lot of stachybotrys in it and a lot of ketomium in it and a lot of Wollemia and trichoderma in it, we can make a safe assumption that with that many different molds and looking at their concentrations, if they're likely emitting toxic mycotoxins. Right. But sometimes it's nice to actually get the mycotoxins test done itself, which the EMMA does as well. So both tests are good. I don't have many people bring me an emma, and I don't ask them for an emma. We usually just do the ermi, but both are great. If you're not sure, flip a coin, you know, because getting both sets of data on mold and mycotoxins are great, but at the same time, I like seeing more data on the different molds and concentrations there. So, great question. They're different, but they're good. Don't feel if you got one and not the other, don't feel bad. Hope that helps. Connie, talk to you later. Bye. Bye.
