A physician explains why doctors need to embrace social media. She argues that platforms are essential for building thought leadership and connecting with patients, and that doctors stepping up online is key to fixing healthcare's problems.
I recognized that social media was such an incredible tool, and I saw it as just such an amazing way to market yourself and to build up what I call thought leadership. I want to see medicine be in a better place.
So what prompted you to create and start trying to communicate to doctors about social media?
Well, I recognized that social media was such an incredible tool that doctors are shying away from, much as I did. I knew from firsthand experience that tackling social media, that creating accounts on there the right way, can really impact your career positively. And I saw it as just such an amazing way to market yourself and to build up what I call thought leadership. And so to me, having done that, I felt like it was something I wanted to share with my colleagues because I want to see medicine be in a better place. And I believe that doctors are the ones to help it get that way. And I do believe that there's a lot in healthcare that is broken and that doctors need to step up to the plate and actually play a more leading role in shaping the future of healthcare. And this is how we do it. We do it through, you know, using social media to connect, marketing ourselves, et cetera.
