About 300 U.S. doctors die by suicide each year. Male physicians kill themselves at 1.4 times the rate of men overall; female physicians at 2.2 times the rate of women. During medical residency, 28% experience major depression, compared to 7-8% of people the same age.
An estimated 300 physicians die by suicide every year in the United States. That number is up significantly, but the suicide rate among male physicians is 1.4 times higher than the general male population. And among female physicians, the relative risk is even more pronounced. It's 2.2 times greater than the general female population. And, and then the last, 28% of residents experience a major depressive episode during training versus 7 to 8% of similarly aged individuals than the U.S. general population.
