What I Need to Understand Before Hiring a Business Coach?

Matt compares finding a business coach to medical training: you need someone who's already built what you want. He's been running cash-based practices since 2014 and teaches field-tested strategies for growing a seven-figure medical practice without insurance.

Hey everyone, I'm Matt, and I want to show you how to start injecting cash profits into your insurance practice starting today. Coaching. Some people think they need it. Some people think they don't. Some people can figure it out on their own. Well, I always like to use the analogy and the example of medical school. So when you decided that you were going to become a doctor, What did you do, right? Well, you started learning some things on your own. Maybe you, when you were 16 years old, you went and spent a day in a family practice, or maybe you shadowed a, you know, whatever, a pediatrician or whatever, just to kind of see what it was like. And your interest was piqued. And then back in those days, you would go to the library, maybe the internet was alive then, and you would learn some things about the human anatomy, and you would take your classes in high school. But you always had it with a bent. But what did you do? You decided to go to a school for undergraduate that would give you a leg up, that would give you the right kind of training for you to go to the right kind of medical school. And then you chose your medical school based on what you wanted to accomplish as a doctor. And then you chose your residency. You petitioned to go to your residency. You made your 2, 3, 4, 5 choices based on who you thought was going to be the right person to learn from. And then when you get done with residency, And you're an attending, you do the same thing. And then when you start your— you're really starting your practice, what do you do? You do fellowships. And why do you do fellowships? Because you identify somebody who has been there, done that. And so the whole conversation with coaching is this is exactly what you have done your entire life. In fact, you have found mentors, you have found coaches, you have found fellows who would show you the way and give you the easy button, if you will, or the shortcuts so that you didn't have to beat your head up against a wall. Now look, you can learn a lot of different ways, but hasn't learning how to treat patients and become an expert in your field been a lot easier by going to an event, signing up for webinars, going and investing money to go spend a couple of days with somebody who's an expert in your field, or doing a fellowship? Because that's exactly what you do. So the case for hiring a mentor, somebody who's going to show you the way is you want somebody who has done it before. I always say, look, if you were in the Marines and you were preparing to go to war, would you rather learn from the drill sergeant who has read about war or the one who has seen his buddies killed in the trenches next to him or her? Well, you'd want the second one because they're going to be truthful with you. They're going to be honest with you. And when you make one little mistake that might get your head blown off, they're going to be all over you like, you know, like ice on a Coke. Right? I mean, so the point is this, you want to work with people that have been there and done that. I believe that's what makes us— in fact, I know that's what makes us different and unique. While I'm not a physician, I know what it's like to own practices and start them from the ground up. We did that in 2014. I know what it's like to see a ton of patients throughout the day. I know the joy and the rush that you get from seeing a patient get well, right? While I was never quote unquote treating patients, I certainly was interacting with them every single day, and there was nothing better. My goodness, there was nothing better than when a patient comes in and says, you know, you fixed my Peyronie's, or you fixed my erectile dysfunction, or what, my ED, whatever it was. Or you, I have more energy now because I'm doing hormone replacement therapy. And you look at the blood work and you look at where they were and you see that light in their eyes. So I can only imagine what it's like for you. And it's the same reason why what we teach, we use in our practices today. We own practices today. Everything that we share and we teach with our clients, has been field-tested in the practices so that you know that it's going to work. Okay, so that's why you want— I mean, you've been doing this your whole life, right? So why stop now? Here's this that I want to leave with you. Just remember that in med school, they don't train you about business because they don't want you to know. They don't want to teach you business because they don't want you going out on your own. They want you to become part of the system. They're really just feeder schools for the system. That's all they are. But you can. You are the smartest people in the world. Don't ever say that you're just a dumb old doctor, that you can't learn anything about business, because you can. My gosh, you've learned the anatomy. You've made it through organic chemistry, for God's sake. Some of you excelled at it, and you certainly have learned how to do surgeries or whatever else. So you're very smart people. You just have to do a little bit of work. That's it. And you can do that with business, because here's the cool thing: medicine and business are based on science. And so every decision that we make from a business standpoint is based on data. It's based on science. It's based on what has worked before, what hasn't worked before, right? And we test. So everything that you're doing in your medical practice and what you've been taught to do about being a doctor works exactly for being in business. So you can do this. Don't ever say that you're a dumb doctor. Don't ever say somebody tell you that you're not any good at business. Prove them wrong, just like you did when you were 8 years old and you told your uncle that you wanted to be a doctor and he said, ah, you'll never make it. You're smart, you're intelligent, you're driven, and when you set your mind to it, you can do anything you want, including get rid of the insurance company and run a great cash practice.
