Max Brun discusses why Thumbtack moved toward transactional services. The challenge: changing the platform fast enough to compete, but slow enough that small-business service providers can keep up with new integrations and still make money.

Kind of looking back though, do you, as far as like when it comes to the timing, do you feel like you kind of made that transition at the right time or?
You know, I mean, in some sense I tend to believe that if something's inevitable or required to your success, then you should just fix it now. Or it's sort of like part of the critical path and there's no way around it. So sooner is likely better. I think that's true. The flip side is, You know, we, we ultimately partner with these pros in service of this kind of common customer, the homeowner. And therefore, in as much as I would like to move this experience light years into the future, kind of tomorrow, I need to sort of bring along a key partner of mine, which is these, these pros, these small businesses, and, you know, their willingness to integrate to participate, to sort of, you know, have it fit their needs and their business is, yeah, a critical constraint and ultimately a big kind of design criteria that I think most people don't appreciate because they come at it from a pure kind of consumer lens and they're like, let me redesign this whole thing. It's going to be radically better and easier and there's going to be a magic button and you click it and then magic happens. And it's like, it's a great pitch. It's like, That magic is awesome. And then they go try and like fulfill that and the business fails and/or it is deeply unprofitable. And that's, I think, kind of the reality with these marketplaces. You gotta fulfill.
