077. How to Adapt, Grow and Keep Making Money in a Changing Economy
1 May 2023 · 13 min
Melissa Kellogg Lueck (Doing Business Like a Woman podcast) presents short coaching guidance for entrepreneurs on adapting to a changing economy. Drawing on 18+ years of experience (notably serving real estate and mortgage clients around 2008), she emphasizes that economic change is constant and recommends four concrete practices: (1) embrace change; (2) make regular evaluations a core habit (what’s working, what’s not, what to change); (3) stay tuned to clients’ desired results and the value you deliver; and (4) continually ask how to help clients get what they want. She frames adaptation as a learned skill that builds resilience, confidence, and continued revenue, and closes with an invitation to private coaching and a CTA to a free on-demand sales training.

Welcome. I am marketing expert and business coach Melissa Kellogg Lueck, and this is the Doing Business Like a Woman podcast, where we are exploring and teaching you how women are reinventing the way business is done and money is made to help you create greater impact and financial freedom one business at a time. Well, hello there, friends. How's it going? I hope you're having a fabulous day. I wanted to talk with you today about something that I've been hearing a lot about, and I thought it would be fun to have a chat about. And it really is all about the thing that I've been hearing, that something's wrong with the economy, Right? Or I hear a lot of people talk about how the economy is changing, and it's in this spirit of something's wrong. But I. What I want to say is that the truth is that the economy is always changing. Like, it's never the same. I've been in business and been studying the economy, the markets and business for over 20 years, right? And what has always been consistent is the economy is always changing. Customers, needs, clients, needs, services and products are always changing. So I think when we're feeling like that it's bad that the economy is changing, really what's happening is that it's a call for us to be adapting and changing ourselves. So when we feel like things are always staying the same, that should be the indication that something is wrong or that we are not tuned into something. Because the truth is the economy will always be changing. So. So if you're in a place where you're feeling fear or feeling uncertainty and feeling like you're not sure what the future is going to hold, I want you to just think about how you can maybe turn that a little bit and just realize that this is completely normal. It's completely normal for the economy to be shifting. And so what I want to offer you today is a few things to do and to think about when you feel like the economy is changing and how you can grow and adapt even if and even when the economy is changing. So the first thing I want to suggest is that we just need to be embracing the change, right? That we expect it. We know that the economy is going to be changing, and we're looking for it. We're just knowing that. That we are always going to be shifting and changing our businesses based on what is happening in the economy, what's happening with our clients, what they most want. And so I learned this very well, I should say, from working in and serving clients in the real estate and mortgage business in the early and 2000. So my primary load of clients was all in the mortgage and real estate industry in that 2008 time frame when real estate and the mortgage market were going through so much turmoil. And I had to really be able to adapt quickly, adapt to my own business, and also adapt and change in what I was teaching my clients and what I was doing for my clients and helping them to market themselves during that time. Because obviously there was so much change going on and there was so much upheaval. And so I. I learned a lot during that time about how to adapt my business. And so I had a lot of clients that fell off. And so, you know, I needed to change what. Who I was serving and what I was doing in order to keep my business going, in order to keep making money. Right. So I want to just encourage you, when you feel that change happening, just embrace it. Just know that it's. That it's happening and be aware of it. And then, number two, I want. I highly suggest that you make evaluation a core habit in your business. And what that means is that we're always looking at what is working, what is going right in the business, where is the growth that we're seeing, the areas that we're seeing clients and money come easier. Right. And what's working. And then we're also looking at what's not working. We're looking at where there is resistance or more obstacles. And then we're taking all of that knowledge, and then we're deciding what we want to do differently, how we want to grow and adapt and change our business. And if we're consistently doing this, I mean, it can even be on a daily basis. You can evaluate anything and everything in your business that you want to get better. And this doesn't have to mean we're writing term papers and, you know, shutting down our businesses for days in order to evaluate. No, this is something you can be doing at all times in your business. And it only takes a few minutes. You answer these three questions of, you know, what is working, what is not working, and what do I want to change? What do I want to adapt or do differently? What lessons am I learning? So it's those three basic questions. And I like to evaluate my business on a monthly basis, even on a weekly basis. Sometimes if I'm really going through growth, I do it on a daily basis, or I'll evaluate after I have sales conversations. Right, right. Or after campaigns where I'm launching a new thing. So when you're making evaluation a core habit in your business, you're always have your finger on the pulse of what's going on in your business and what's working and what's not. And then number three, I suggest you always stay in tune with the result that your clients want and know the value that you offer to them and how you help them get that. And that really helps to build your confidence right around your ability to always know what your clients want and how you serve them. Because even if the economy is in a downturn or an upturn or it's changing, people still need what you have to offer in some way, shape or form, right? And when you are really keeping your finger on the pulse of what that is and believing that you can serve those folks, however their needs shift and change as it results to your service, your product, right? Then that gives you the confidence to go out there, chat with your clients, know what they're wanting, how you help them, and just provide that to them. Right? And then fourth, I suggest that you're always asking yourself and your clients how you can help them to get what they want as it relates to your service, how you can help them get that 100% of the time. And this is not an opportunity to shame yourself or blame yourself. This is a challenge to you. Anytime the economy is changing, this is always a challenge for us and an invitation for us to go further, to go higher, to be more creative, right? So rather than using these challenges that we see in the market or in the economy as a reason to give up, shut down, go hide, I want you to think of it as a challenge. It's an opportunity, an invitation for you to grow and get better at what you do. And this is what I have had to learn over being. Over the years of being in business for 18 years, right. Is I always have been shifting and growing and changing things in my business in order to adapt to the skills that I have, you know, the time that I have, if I. In times where my. My responsibilities have grown or shrunk, you know, based on getting married, having kids, all that kind of stuff, right? Um, so there's always going to be change happening in our lives, in our businesses, with our clients, with our economy. So when you embrace this opportunity to grow and shift and change your business, you will continue to be a creator, an innovator, a leader, a leader in your industry, in your community, in your. In where your clients are, in the community of your clients, right? And so the result of embracing change and adapting to it is really you and your business becoming stronger, more resilient more creative, better at helping your clients, better at helping them get what they want more often. And you'll continue to make money always, right? You will build your confidence in your ability to always make money and always be able to support your family, to always be able to create profit in your business. And so the skill of adapting and growing is. And always being able to make money and believing in your ability and trusting yourself is all something that I love teaching my clients and work on with them. Right? And they all often say I have a calming effect because I've been through this for 18 years. Like change is the only thing that's constant. I mean, we've all heard that, right? So it's always helpful to have someone in your corner. And whether it is a group of people or, you know, a co. A private coach like myself, we can help you to see when you're just freaking out or if there's actually something we need to be paying attention to that is inviting us to adapt and iterate our business. Right? And then we make a plan and we take action from there. And so this process of adapting and changing continually in our businesses is a learned skill. This is not something we're born to know how to do. Right? And so it's something I've continually worked on throughout my career, throughout my having my business growing, my business over the last 18 years. And so it's something I want to be teaching as much as possible. I'm teaching you here today. And also I can teach you privately and specifically on what you are experiencing in your business. So I do in fact have private coaching slots, one on one slots open right now. So if that's something that is of interest to you, I would love to serve you in this way. And so you can always reach out to me and schedule a call. And I would love to talk about how this could help you and what it would look like. Right. So I wanted to just pop on and talk with you about this today because I've been hearing about it so much. And I'll continue to talk about it and continue to teach about it because I know that and believe in you and I believe that we are all capable of making as much money and impact and influence as we want in the world as entrepreneurs and achieving that financial freedom on our terms. So if I can serve you in that, I would love that. And I hope you have a fabulous day and I will see you soon. Take care. Bye.
