ChatGPT Can Now Find Upwork Freelancers

In this video Michael Elliott demonstrates a new ChatGPT feature that lets users find Upwork freelancers instantly by typing a simple prompt (e.g., "find me a freelancer who can build a Shopify store"). He shows the AI returning a short list of qualified freelancers within seconds, proving the tool works in the UK without VPNs. Elliott explains that this shifts the traditional client‑driven search model—where freelancers had to climb rankings and pitch proposals—to an AI‑driven recommendation model where the AI acts as the search engine and presents only a handful of candidates. He argues that early adopters have a window to dominate the new discovery layer. To become the name the AI recommends, he outlines four concrete actions: (1) crystal‑clear niche definition, (2) profile copy that quantifies outcomes rather than vague adjectives, (3) reviews that explicitly mention the desired work, and (4) a fully completed profile with all fields filled. Elliott stresses that the AI reads profiles and reviews, not proposals, and that freelancers must optimize for recommendation rather than click‑through. He urges viewers to test the @Upwork prompt on their own profiles, share feedback, and subscribe for future deep‑dive content on AI‑optimized freelancing strategies.

Okay, I have to show you this because I didn't think that it would work. This morning I opened ChatGPT and I typed one sentence: find me a freelancer who can build a Shopify store. And it just did it. 3 people, 5 people, 10 people ready to hire, 4 seconds flat. No Upwork, no scrolling, no proposals, nothing. And right, stay with me, I'm in the UK. Everyone online swears that this is America only. No, seriously, I wish I was joking. They do. But if It works right here, and I'll prove it on my screen in a minute. But honestly, do you know what? Forget about the feature for a minute, because the bit that actually got me wasn't the 4 seconds. It wasn't the feature at all. It was what it means. The way clients find freelancers and connect, the whole thing just quietly flipped, and most people, they haven't even noticed. 15 years it worked one way. Client searches, client scrolls, you claw up the list and pray you get clicked or boost yourself there. That client this morning, they didn't play it. Never opened Upwork, never saw a proposal. The AI just picked before anybody got to pitch. So guys, here's the good news, and I mean genuinely, this is amazing news. Almost nobody is ready for this yet, which means right now, today, there's a window and it's open. The people who get it first win quietly for ages before anybody else notices the rules have changed. So there's really only one question that matters: when a client asks ChatGPT for someone like you, does your name come up? So guys, let me show you live now, and then let me show you how you can make sure that it's yours. Right, I can hear you all. Let me actually just show you instead of just talking about it. Michael Elliott, please. Okay, let's do it. My screen. UK account. No VPN, no trickery. This is literally just my UK ChatGPT account and I just type @Upwork and then say, find me someone who can build me a high quality Shopify store. Hit go. Watch this. There, look at that. I didn't browse. I didn't open a single profile. I asked and it went into a marketplace of 18 million people and handed me, what, 10 individuals with the reasons that it chose them. Look at this one. Like, I don't know, Artem here, Shopify developer, $35 an hour, 100% job success score, $600K earned nearly, right? That's it right there. There's a client's whole hiring decision. One answer, done. And every freelancer it didn't name, for this client at least, they may as well not exist. Never even in the room. Proving it works, that's the easy part. What it does for your chances, that's the part that I need you to get, so stay with me. Now here's what actually changed, and it's so much bigger than a new button or a new search bar. For 15 years, the client was the search engine. They typed, they filtered, they scrolled. Your whole job was to climb high enough to get noticed. Now there's a layer sitting in front of the client. The AI is the search engine now. The client just says what they want like a human, in a sentence, and the model does the searching for them. And this is the bit that people often miss. The client never sees the long list anymore. They see the AI's 3 main ones, and if they scroll, the 10 that are there. That is it. So the game stops being "rank higher" and it becomes "be the name the AI is confident enough to say out loud." Get this, it's not even reading your proposal when it decides. There is no proposal yet. It's reading your profile. It's reading your history. Your niche reviews the things that you can't see. The stuff you set up once and forgot about. That's the comfortable lie that's about to cost people work. We're all still polishing the pitch, but the pitch now happens after the AI's already decided if you're worth pitching. Miss that and you're writing a beautiful proposal for a room that you never got invited into. Actually, do you know what? Pause me a minute. Do this right now. 30 seconds it'll take and it'll tell you something real. Open ChatGPT and type @Upwork and describe yourself, your service, your niche, the client that you would kill for, and then look at who comes back. Be honest. Is it you? Is it people like you? That's fine. Or could be completely honest here, is it a totally different freelancer than the one that you think you are? Because if it's that, tell me in the comments one word. Found if someone like you showed up, invisible if they didn't. Because that one word is the most honest feedback on your profile that you will get all year. Tell me what you search for and what industry is and put your profile link below, and I'll tell you what I'd change. So not only does it give you those 3 and goes across and gives you those 10, gives you individuals of different earnings, different costs per hour, whatever it thinks best matches. So how do you become the name that it says out loud? How do you control the AI? Well, it's not magic, it's 4 things, and it's not the 4 things the gurus are flogging either. One, niche clarity. Vague profiles confuses the model. This is exactly the issue when they remove specialized profiles. Say you do everything and it matches you to nothing. I do one thing for one client, gets named. Jack of all trades, they get skipped every time. Number 2 is proof that it can read. You can see by what it puts below the individuals here, not only does it give you a list of individual users, but it also gives you a breakdown. I've pulled a shortlist, strong models, what they've got. Well, where does it pull this from? It's proof that it can read on people's profiles, their reviews and their individual profile optimization. They've got outcomes inside of their profiles, not adjectives. I increased X by Y beats hardworking and passionate, and it's not even close. One's a fact that it can repeat to a client. The other, well, it's just noise. So stay with me for number 3, because 4 is important. But 3: reviews that match the ask. Reviews naming the exact work you want more of to train it to recommend you for that exact work. Great to work with. Lovely, but it does absolutely nothing for you. If you look through this, you can see very clearly why. Job success score, consistent earnings, speed, performance. Where's it pulling this from? I've just told you. And 4, well, that's just a completed profile. And I know it's boring as hell, but boring earns money. A half-finished profile is a risk, and it won't risk its own credibility for you. And number 4, completedness. Complete a profile. And I know it sounds boring, it is boring, but a half-finished profile is a risk, and Upwork isn't going to risk its own credibility ability for you. That's not just going to show you just because you exist. Every empty box is a reason to pick someone else. Really, guys, here's the whole thing in one line: you used to optimize to win the click, now you optimize to win the recommendation. And that happens whether you're online, asleep, or you're on a beach on a sun lounger. Almost nobody's playing this game yet, which is exactly why I'm telling you now. Let me be dead straight about the timing. This is the whole point. Right now, this is relatively brand new. Most freelancers have no idea that it exists, and the Who do? They think it's America only. You just watched it work in the UK. That gap between what's true and what everyone believes, that is your window. When discovery runs through AI, the freelancers it trusts early become the default answer. Get recommended now, deliver now. You're teaching the system that you're the safe bet, you're the option they should choose. This is ranking a website in 2010. Boring, early. And those people own the top of the page now. The sad truth is this: most of you are gonna do nothing. You won't like the video, you won't comment, you won't subscribe, you won't take accountability until a client says, yeah, ChatGPT recommended someone else, or maybe even yourself by chance. And by then, the defaults are already set inside of ChatGPT. You don't have to be most people. So guys, look, you came here to find out how people are finding freelancers using LLMs like ChatGPT, and I've just shown you. It also works in the UK. You're leaving with something most freelancers won't figure out for over, over a year, probably. The client stopped being the search engine. The AI took the job. Your profile's out there pitching for you right now as you speak in rooms that are impossible to see. You're not chasing clients for a search bar anymore. You're building the thing an AI recommends on your behalf. That's the freelancer who finally stops grinding proposals at midnight. I've got a few options for my next video. I could rebuild a profile from scratch and optimize towards the AI, talk about how boosting affects it and the format that AI actually reads and repeats. Or we could maybe go on a journey together to make $1,000, $3,000, $5,000. Let me know in the comments which one of these you would prefer. Also subscribe, like the video, comment, save it. Do your boy a favor. It helps get me out there and other people to see it because this is important. You know, it's not really a favor to me, to be honest. It's because I'll get you the truth about this platform before everybody catches on. No gurus, no recycled nonsense, just what's working whilst it's still working. Catch you in the next one.
