Why Being An Underdog In Business Is Powerful

Michael Elliott explains why underdogs have an edge in business: they can take bigger risks without fear of losing much, they learn from rejection instead of being crushed by it, and persistence becomes their competitive advantage.
Being the underdog is a superpower, and I'm going to tell you why in the next 10 minutes. Being the underdog, you don't have a lot of stuff. You don't have a client base, you don't have cash flow, you don't have money in the bank, you don't have social proof, you don't have a lot of things. But there's one thing you don't have that you don't want, and that is the risk to lose something, something to lose. And that puts you in a very, very, very dangerous position for your competitors, other people out there who are already established. Because when you have nothing to lose, you're just a demon when it comes to actually being busy. If you take action as an underdog, that's when you are dangerous, because the action from the underdog is always going to far outweigh the action of 99% of the people that have something. There's a famous saying in boxing, and that's already in the UFC, if you like. It's hard to go for your 4am Jogging, your silk pajamas. And what that means is, like when you see major fighters get to the top, and they've. All of us, when they were training as. As fighters, they were in the gym, they were up 4am, they were training five times a day or whatever, the professional athletes would train to be a UFC fighter, right? They trained all that time. They ate perfectly, their diet was perfect. They had nothing to lose, they had everything to gain. So they pushed, they pressed. Those 4am runs were easy because they had the goal, the target in mind. Whereas now, if they are world champion and they have successfully beat five people and they've, you know, occurred X amount of income, it's a lot harder to do. It's not impossible, but it's a lot harder to keep that same regimented mentality of who wants it more and who wants it more is ultimately who wins in the long run. And that's why being an underdog is advantageous, and you should look at it as such. So without going into too much detail, we cover nothing to lose, but I wanted to talk about the shots on goal mentality. So you're here. I don't know if you, any of you are soccer fans, but let's make this a. It's a penalty kick, right? This is. This is the ball, this is the goal, and here's a goalkeeper. And that goalkeeper is called failure, okay? So that goalkeeper, this is your. Your shot. And every shot you take, straight at the keeper, wide off the post over the bar. I had to draw it that way because I didn't want to ruin the picture. So every shot you take that you miss has zero consequence. You have nothing to lose. There is zero consequence to you not getting a positive response from that application you made on upwork, or not getting a positive response from that individual that you cold called or the 10,000 emails you sent. There's. There is absolutely nothing that you have to lose. Therefore, you just look at this, continue to take shot after shot after shot, and then, as this one did right here, eventually you score. And if you were to compare that with somebody who has everything to lose. So inside of here, there's already 50 clients. Okay, this person taking this shot, this penalty, right? Oh, this is a good analogy. This penalty that he's about to take, right? He's already scored plenty of goals. How important is this shot on target to him? How important is it? Is it less or is it more important than this guy? The answer is that it's less important to him. Which means that this person will do whatever they can to make sure that this goes in. Whereas this person might overlook, might not deliver that order in time or to the right quality, or call back at the right time when they were meant to, or do X, Y and Z, whatever industry it is that you're in. If we're talking about the AI space, you know, scoping of the projects and then delivering it properly, you are extremely dangerous in this position to this person because as he takes this shot, he doesn't care where it goes because he's already got what he wants. But what he doesn't realize is if he doesn't keep taking the shots and scoring the goals, then he's going to slip. And that's your gap in the market. That is where you as an underdog have a superpower because you do not have to worry about taking the shot. You don't even have to worry about if the shot is good. You have nothing to worry about. The only thing you have to worry about is trying to take the shot in the first place. Whereas this guy, oops, this guy here, he. He's in a dangerous position. Everything could damage his, his cash flow. So his revenue could drop, his overheads could increase depending on different things in different industries. All of this, it could come into play. There are so many revenue, overheads, reputation, all of these things are on the line. Not when you're here, they're not. When you are here, doesn't matter. It ask the question, like, not. I don't know what we're trying to say to beg, but like no pride, no, no nothing. Just a desire that you're not going to fail is critical. So the absence of true loss makes an underdog a really, really, really fierce competitor and something that is very dangerous to challenge. Right? And that is something that you have to live with as a, as an entrepreneur. Because once you are successful, and you will be if you're persistent, as I've covered in other videos, you will be. If you take all these shots, you will be a success. No doubt about it. If you continue to take them, eventually laws of probability show you that it'll hit. But eventually you become this guy. Can you stay motivated still? Could you, could you have the same look whilst you are sat watching this video now, would you have the same motivation if I 10 extra income, would you? 1% of you will say yes, I fall into that 1% category. I want the most of everything in the world. And that's it. That's the way that I look at life in general. Addictive personality, it helps. But you don't have to have that to be a success. You don't. But what I'm saying is it is 99 of people when they get there. Let's say Your target is 10k a month, which is so easily obtainable in the AI arena. Scary, but 10k a month, you hit 10k, then you get to. Let's just say you're at like 18k a month. Let's say this is your goal. You've gone from it zero here, taking these, all these shots, you've gone from zero to 10k and then you're floating at 18k. Well, this was your original target. You. Some people go down, they're happy, quality of life, lifestyle, no problem with that if that's the way that you want to go. Some people see an opportunity and put their foot on the pedal. That's what I advise you do. That's what I try and do anyway. There's people a lot more successful than me out there. But I tell you something, I make the best out of everything that I've got. Like nobody. I look every time when my head hits the pillow at night, I know I gave everything that I physically possibly could to that day. And that means that like, whether win, lose or draw like I can, I can never be blamed for defeat or success. Like it's, it just comes as part and parcel of the job for me. It's like you try and if you fail, you fail, but you don't. Not Try. And the core about understanding the. The underdog advantage is exactly that. And if you take that mentality into, you know, like, when it comes down to the. The sort of rejection, right? If you take this mentality, rejection isn't failure. Rejection is feedback based off of what you've done. Are you doing something wrong? You try, you fail. Okay? That's information. Failure is feedback. Okay? You try again, you fail again. Okay, that's feedback. You try again, you fail. It's feedback. It's feedback. It's feedback. And then eventually you score and you see where you scored, and the doors and avenues and angles start to change. Like, things just start to change around you. And you'll feel it as you go through your entrepreneurial journey. You will feel the things change around you. But this video is designed to let you know that being the underdog is the biggest superpower that you have, and you should leverage it and let that energize you. Let the fact that you have nothing to lose be the energy, because 99% of the population have lost that energy. And the 1 percenters that you see everywhere, yeah, the Hormoses, all of these guys, the Gary Vees, they're the guys that smelt blood and followed it and haven't stopped to this day. And that is exactly where you could be if you followed that mentality. But the key is not to quit and understand that being an underdog is a. Is a positive thing. My name's Michael Elliott. I was once the underdog. Thanks for watching.
