In this interview, Michael Horn talks with Matt Kramer, CEO and co‑founder of Wildflower Schools, about the decade‑long evolution of the Wildflower network. Kramer recounts his personal journey from a Montessori‑educated child with ADHD, through a decade leading Teach for America, to co‑creating a decentralized microschool model inspired by Montessori and entrepreneurial principles. He explains Montessori’s core ideas—developmentally‑responsive environments, meaningful child choice, and scripted yet flexible materials—and how Wildflower adopts these while allowing each school to reflect the founder‑teacher’s culture, community, and mission. The organizational model is a nonprofit, teacher‑owned network where each tiny school (20‑50 students, 2‑4 teachers) is its own nonprofit and the teachers serve as co‑executive directors, eliminating the principal‑teacher translation gap. Wildflower provides a “School Startup Journey” with structured guidance, mentorship panels, financial tools, and a shared brand, while keeping operational control (budget, staffing) in teachers’ hands. The network has grown to 72 schools, including pre‑K, K‑12, and micro‑charters across multiple states, leveraging child‑care subsidies, ESA/voucher programs, and culturally‑specific themes (Afrocentric, neuro‑diverse, outdoor). Kramer discusses their experimental ed‑tech effort—computer‑vision and ultra‑wideband sensors—to automate Montessori observation, noting technical and funding challenges and a current pause. On assessment, they rely on limited state tests, executive‑function scales, and parent net‑promoter scores (80s) while acknowledging the lack of robust, individualized metrics. Finally, Kramer projects continued 20% annual growth, envisioning tens of thousands of small, teacher‑led schools in the U.S. over the next two decades, with Wildflower’s role being to supply tools, mentorship, and a supportive network.
