In this episode of the Future You podcast, hosts Michael Horn and Jeff Selingo interview Mallory Dwindle Palisch, Chancellor of Reach University and co‑founder of the Oxford Teachers Academy. The conversation opens with a stark picture of the rural education crisis: about one‑fifth of U.S. students attend rural schools, and roughly a million of them learn in classrooms without a permanent teacher. Mallory explains how her personal background in a small farming community and her doctoral research on rural teacher shortages revealed that traditional pathways—sending rural residents to urban universities—fail because of debt, relocation, and low return rates. She describes her “experience is the best teacher” philosophy, shaped by her time as a Teach for America Spanish teacher and founder of the experiential charter school Oxford Day Academy. Building on that, Reach University offers a regionally accredited, nonprofit apprenticeship model that converts existing school staff (paraprofessionals, bus drivers, lunch staff) into teacher candidates. The university braids federal higher‑education aid with apprenticeship funding, delivering a degree at roughly $900 per student per year with no cost to districts. Faculty are active K‑12 teachers or former teachers, delivering courses evenings and weekends. Competency‑based learning is tracked through a proprietary platform called Craft, which aligns on‑the‑job performance with academic credit, re‑imagining the Carnegie credit’s “homework” component. The hosts discuss accreditation, the role of state certification requirements, and the broader policy implication that focusing on outcomes rather than input credentials could unlock more innovative rural talent pipelines. The episode ends with a teaser for part two, which will explore quality, scalability, and other rural workforce applications.
