In this March 2022 podcast, Michael Horn interviews Mallory Dwinnell, founder and chancellor of Reach University, about the creation and operation of a novel apprenticeship‑based teacher‑education model. Dwinnell explains how her PhD research on rural teacher shortages, combined with Clayton Christensen’s disruption theory, led to the founding of the Oxford Teachers Academy, later incorporated into Reach University. The core problem addressed is the structural K‑12 teacher shortage and the hidden “non‑consumption” of paraprofessionals who want to become teachers but cannot afford traditional four‑year degrees. Reach’s solution is a job‑embedded bachelor’s program where the student’s work as a paraprofessional counts for half the credit, funded through Pell grants, registered‑apprenticeship dollars and a modest $75‑per‑month student contribution. Curriculum is delivered via Oxford‑style tutorials that connect classroom theory to on‑the‑job assignments, avoiding traditional lecture‑based credit‑for‑prior‑learning hurdles. Quality is ensured through an internal CRAFT tool that aligns work tasks with learning outcomes and external audits by the Workforce Talent Educators Association (WTEA). Accreditation was achieved via an incubation model under an existing accredited institution, then gaining regional accreditation from WSCUC. The university aims to graduate 10,000 teachers in five years, with 90 % from under‑represented backgrounds, and to scale the apprenticeship model to other states, community colleges, and industries such as healthcare, IT, supply‑chain, and manufacturing, as well as internationally. The conversation also touches on the three‑sided market (students‑employees, employers, university) and future collaborative expansion.
