In this March 29 2022 podcast, Michael Horn interviews Mallory Dwinnell, founder and chancellor of Reach University, about her mission to solve the chronic K‑12 teacher shortage through a disruptive, apprenticeship‑based higher‑education model. Drawing on her PhD research on rural teacher shortages and Clayton Christensen’s disruption theory, Mallory explains how traditional four‑year teacher‑education programs overshoot the needs of paraprofessionals who want to become teachers but cannot afford full‑time study. Reach University partners directly with school districts (a B2B model) to identify paraprofessionals, counts their on‑the‑job work as half of the degree, and supplements it with online evening/weekend “Oxford‑style” tutorial seminars that turn workplace tasks into homework. Financing comes from district‑paid $75 monthly subscriptions, FAFSA/Pell grants, and registered‑apprenticeship funds, eliminating student debt. Quality is ensured through an internal CRAFT tool that aligns work assignments with learning outcomes and external audits via the Workforce Talent Educators Association (WTEA). Accreditation was achieved quickly through an incubation process with an existing accredited institution, leading to regional accreditation by WSCUC/WASC. Reach aims to graduate 10,000 teachers in five years, with a broader goal of 300,000 new teachers across partner institutions, and is piloting replication with Dallas College. The model is positioned as a three‑sided market (students‑employees, employers, university) and is being explored for other high‑wage sectors such as healthcare, IT, supply‑chain, and manufacturing, as well as international expansion.
