This chapter introduces a framework for understanding habits by categorising them into three primary types based on activity nature: habits of character (emotional/behavioural traits such as honesty, time‑management, friendliness), intellectual habits (cognitive processes like reasoning, logical thinking, observation) and motor habits (physical postures and movements such as walking, running, exercising). It then distinguishes between conscious habits—those we can readily notice and that disappear when the cue is removed (e.g., smoking after a meal, daily workouts, alarm‑waking)—and hidden habits, which operate on autopilot, are hard to detect, and often require external feedback to become visible. The chapter provides a systematic self‑identification method for uncovering hidden habits through targeted questions across five domains: Physical (water intake, posture, gait), Social (repetitive phrases, gestures, eye‑contact), Energy (snacking patterns, morning routine, bedtime routine), Mental (reactions to negative news, envy, criticism) and Productivity (phone‑checking frequency, task‑prioritisation, work approach). It encourages asking close others for additional insight, emphasizing that revealing hidden habits can lead to surprising self‑awareness and personal growth.

Topics

Three Core Habit Categories: Character, Intellectual, and Motor

Defines and exemplifies the three habit types based on the nature of the activity—emotional/behavioural, cognitive, and physical/muscular.

Conscious vs Hidden Habits: Awareness Levels and Persistence

Contrasts habits that are easily recognised and fade when cues are removed (conscious) with those that run on autopilot and are difficult to notice without external feedback (hidden).

Self‑Assessment Framework for Uncovering Hidden Habits

Presents a structured set of probing questions across Physical, Social, Energy, Mental, and Productivity domains to help individuals surface hidden habits.

Leveraging External Feedback to Reveal Hidden Behaviours

Suggests asking trusted friends, family, or partners for observations to complement self‑reflection and increase habit awareness.
