Mike Andes tells home-service business owners to stop consuming content and start executing. Over-learning fragments attention across multiple marketing channels and service lines without mastering any. The real scarcity is not information but the ability to implement one high-impact constraint at a time, and AI cannot replace execution or pay salaries.

If you have a home service business, I implore you to stop learning and start doing. And if that means you need to stop watching this video, stop watching a podcast or a book or subscribing to a whole bunch of YouTube channels and digesting hours and hours of content every single day, I implore you to stop taking more inputs and just focus on doing what you already know you need to do in your business. I fell into this trap a lot in the first few years of business because when you're out in the field doing the work, you have plenty of time to plug in your earbuds and listen to copious amounts of books, podcasts, YouTube videos, and get so many ideas of what you should do in your business. And the bottom line is most of us only need to execute on one thing and maybe add one thing every few months to improve our business. If you're trying to figure out Facebook ads, That's the only thing you can think about. And if you're also trying to do some Google Ads and some yard signs, and you're also trying to figure out Every Door Direct Mail and building your website and wrapping your trucks, if you're trying to do all these other things at the same time, it's unlikely you're going to solve the constraint of learning Facebook Ads. And so I believe in the world of AI, in the world of copious amounts of content being created every single minute, we are not dying for a lack of instruction or education or knowing what to do. We are dying for the fact, our businesses are dying for the fact that we are not executing on what we know we should be doing. And because we are not executing on what we know we should be doing, we rather fill that time with the mental scratching that happens when we can learn all these other things. And we learn from people that have built hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue about what they're doing in their business. And that's so exciting. That's so cool. And we watch what someone does in a huge launch or a fantastic event or a huge conference. And we think, oh, that's amazing. I would love to do that. You see someone else doing a course or an online, some sort of a community, like, oh my goodness, I would love to do that. And we constantly are keeping our mind fragmented in terms of attention instead of putting all that focus on the one constraint in the business that we should be focused on. And here's the thing. A lot of times the reason we don't do that is because we're afraid we're focused on the wrong thing. We're afraid we're building the wrong business. We're afraid we're in the wrong service. We're afraid we should be doing a completely different industry. We're afraid we're on the wrong bus, the wrong vehicle, for our wealth. And because of that, we constantly are investigating other vehicles. Here's the problem. You can only choose one vehicle. And so if I have a Ferrari and a Corolla and a bus and a motorcycle, I'm like, oh man, I don't know which vehicle to operate in. OK, well, I'm just going to learn all about all 4 of them. Well, you can only choose one and you will get further on the motorcycle if you just get on the motorcycle and start implementing and executing and taking action versus pondering and thinking about how I could use the Ferrari and whether the bus is a better situation. And what about the Corolla? it's more dependable, it's cheaper, like instead of just taking action on one thing. And so, so many of us are thinking, well, should I have gotten HVAC? You know, should I have gotten electrical? I'm hearing private equity is getting into those industries. Maybe I shouldn't be doing this window cleaning thing. I shouldn't be doing mowing. I hear Mike talking about mowing, so maybe I should do recurring services. Instead of just taking what we're currently doing and putting all of our time, all of our attention on it. And this whole thing with AI is making this worse because now it feels like you're making progress when in reality you're just taking more information And you're like, oh no, no, AI can run my business. No, you need to execute on building the systems for the business to operate inside of. How do I know this? You go try to use AI to hire someone right now and grow your organization and get another technician. You're like, oh, I can do that. I can have an avatar and then I can have them go into this flow and ask them these questions and it'll take what they say and run it through this transcript and offer them a job. At the end of the day, they have to have evidence and proof that they're gonna get a paycheck. And that paycheck is not coming from AI or an agent. It's coming from the business. It's coming from you. And so right now, at least for now, it is not going to the person that knows the most information because AI ultimately knows all information. It has scraped every piece of data on the internet and has that knowledge, but yet it still can't hire one person because it can't pay the bill. It actually costs money to run those tokens. And so it is still going to come down to the person that can execute the best. It's not going to come to the person who knows the most information. This was a huge topic of discussion when I was thinking about building Home Service Boardroom, is I didn't want to make it a place where every single week there's new content and new courses and hours and Q&A, and then there's live calls and there's all this stuff and it's overwhelming with the amount of information because we already have so much of it. You can type in very quickly into AI, into any model, and immediately have copious amounts of data information of what you should do next in your business. It is not the person that knows the most information that will win now. It is the person that will execute. And instead of learning more information, they actually block all the noise out and just focus on 1 or 2 things and execute on them. So in the Home Service Boardroom, what we did instead is we just have 1 course every single month. It might be 2 to 4 hours, but it's about 1 topic. And then it's not just like, learn about these things. What did you learn? Awesome, great, let's go. No, execute. Go implement this inside of your business, inside of your life. And so like the first module, the first course is all about health. Okay. I want you to track your macros, track your calories, track your steps and your workouts for 30 days straight, every single day. Great. Module number 2, course number 2, month number 2, we are talking about marriage. Okay, I want you to actually go implement a budget, a profit and loss statement for your personal finances, create a marriage constitution with you and your spouse to be able to grow the business together and be on the same page. And that's all we're gonna talk about. We're not gonna also talk about marketing and systems and hiring and firing and putting dollars here and investing in real estate and stocks and crypto. We're not gonna talk about all that stuff. We're gonna talk about one thing at a time because it's very easy to get into this idea of feel like you're making progress when really all you're doing is receiving incoming information. And this is especially true for those out in the field 'cause you have so much time on your hands to listen. You just are constantly ingesting more information. And that's fine. I would rather you listen to that than just music all day long or some Listen to some talk radio or news, for goodness sake. But be very careful to think that learning more information is gonna be the solve for your business. It's gonna be taking one bit— piece of information and then likely putting huge amounts of effort and energy and time over the course of months to execute it in your business. In order to see a result, 3 things need to happen. I need to identify a problem, I need to identify a solution, and then I need to go execute. And most of us get caught in this loop of 1 and 2. We see problems in our business, we see solutions. We hear about it on a podcast, we see it in a book, Watching a video. I guess you wouldn't see it in a book. You would hear it or listen to it or read it in a book. And then we go right back to, oh, there's another problem I've been— oh my goodness, some huge influencer said this on their podcast. I should do that same thing. Okay, so problem, solution, problem, solution, problem, solution, problem, solution. But if you never execute, the loop is never completed and you never achieve progress. And so be very careful as we get into this world where more and more content will be made. AI will make it easier to get the input. It'll get— it'll become easier and easier to know what to do right in your business. It'll become easier and easier to input all of your information into an AI model. I literally created this thing for myself, mikeandes.com/ai. It's completely free for everyone. You can input all your financials. It'll go through 20 million words that I've said online and then tell you exactly what to do in your business. And it won't do you a single bit of good if you don't execute. And so if you constantly are getting, what's wrong with my business? Here's a solution. And then because of this, we think we're a good student. It's like, well, if I went and talked to this person, I'd ask them these 3 questions. And then if I talked This other person would ask these questions. And I just talked to someone the other day, like 30 questions for me. I'm like, you got to figure out which one of these questions actually are most important. Prioritize. We will get the answer and then you need to execute on it. Because I would rather have the wrong answer but with 100% execution than the right answer with 0% execution. And so instead of trying to get the perfect pick, instead of trying to make every single decision Perfect. Take action, massive action, on the current one constraint that you've identified inside the business. And don't spend all day long trying to figure out what that constraint is. 'Cause here's the thing, there's 100 problems with my business, your business, and every other business. The only job you have as the founder when you're growing is to identify which one should I be allocating my attention and resources towards? Which one should I be focused on? And complete the loop of— Problem, solution, execute, execute, execute. The person that executes the most grows the biggest business. There are plenty of people that become armchair quarterbacks for their business and for everyone else's business. And they've listened to every podcast, they know every influencer, they listen to every single book, they listen to any time an influencer is like doing tiers of books, they know every single one. They're like, oh yep, I've done the 7 Habits of Successful People, I know the Offers book, okay yeah, Dale Carnegie, I know that book, okay. And they know all this information, and yet they still have not built the business that serves them, their family, their team, and achieving their goals. But yet they know everything of what they should do, and they have the answer for everything, and they can break things apart, and they can analyze and overanalyze and just fail to execute. So I encourage you today, stop watching this video, stop watching the next 10 videos, stop doom scrolling, stop talking to AI and getting 100 different ideas of what you should change in your business. Take the one thing that you already know you got to figure out. If it's hiring more people, just focus on that. That's the only thing to focus on. You don't need to learn 20 different ways to get new employees. Take the one thing that's worked and just do more of it and get better at it. Get better at refining your interview questions. Get better at refining how your job ad looks. Get better at making sure that you follow up with an applicant before they show up to their interview so they actually show up. And once they actually get the job offer signed, that you follow up with them again to ensure they show up for day one. And then you refine your training process. You know, what to do. And so many times I know business owners know exactly what to do and the only thing that's holding them back is execution. And so the only help I want you to get, the only thing I want you to reach out externally and try to pull in towards you is someone that will keep you accountable to execution. Don't listen to what I'm saying, listen to what I'm doing. And right now in the Home Service Boardroom, the only thing we focus on is accountability. We literally track every single member as to whether or not they're completing each monthly challenge. Mm-hmm. And so if you need to go out and get a coach or a community or someone else to hold you accountable to taking execution on the thing you know you need to do in the business, In my opinion, that's the only help you need.
