Mike Hartman walks athletes through building their own written plan separate from what their coach gives them. Start with daily routines like making your bed and eating well, then write 30-day goals in a journal and adjust them as you go. The core is staying passionate about the game, whatever level you play at.

Welcome to another episode. We are still on the Ready to Play series for athletes. So if you haven't listened to the first one, please go back and listen to the last episode. That's where we talked about the Ready to Play assessment. This one is called the Plan. And no matter what you do in life, whether if it's in work or, you know, if it's in sports or anything you're doing, you need a plan. So the first thing I'm going to tell every athlete is they need a roadmap, which the assessment helps them create. And the second thing is a plan. Having that plan in place, the plan is as simple as, okay, I'm going to get up at 7am, I'm going to have a healthy breakfast. I'm then going to take care of my self care because we have to take care of ourselves. I mean, I'm sure we have a lot of moms and dads are listening and you have your young ones 13 years old and even, maybe even older sometimes, hey, you gotta, you have to brush your teeth. You have to take care of yourself. First thing you do is I tell them actually to make their bed. That's the first thing I do. So they start off on a positive note. Hey, you get up, you make your bed right away. But just having that plan in place all the way throughout the day, even when we're back in the school, okay, you have to go to school, you have to do your homework and then we're going to train after. So without getting into a real detailed plan, I tell every athlete that no matter what it is that their sport that they're in, you need to follow a structured plan different from the ones that your coaches give you or your athletic director or whoever's working with you, you need your own plan. Part of the plan is to listening to your coach, listening to people around you. Part of the plan is working on your skills to have a better skill set to become a better athlete, a better teammate. That could be all part of the plan and it's not a goal. People say, well, my plan is I want to play like a hockey player. For example, every kid I talk to that's playing Competitive hockey. My goal is to play Junior A in the ushl, the ohl, and then see what happens from there. Or if you're the American player would say, hey, my goal is to play in the ushl, the North American Hockey League, play college hockey, then maybe pro test it with your, with your young athlete at home and you'll get an answer like that most of the time. But that's, that's, that's not really the plan. That's like a vision goal and we'll get into some of those later. So it's very important to have a plan. And I like our young athletes not to put the plan. They can have it in their phone if they want. But I believe it's really important that the young athlete today writes it down in a journal and puts a little date next to it. Okay, my plan is for the next 30 days I'm going to do X, Y and Z. And then what we're going to do is go back into that journal. We're going to check it off. And did you accomplish that plan? Was that part of, you know, something that worked for you? Maybe it didn't work for you. Maybe we have to alter the plan. That's where the coaching comes in. So we're here to help you. We're here to help parents, families, weekend warriors, moms and dads. And that's, that's been my passion for years at working with, with athletes and, and doing everything I can to help and everyday people as well. I work with Fortune 50, Fortune 500 companies but when it comes to the athletes, it just puts a little bit, it's something that I, I just have passion and I just love it. We have many articles about getting ready to play. I'm going to continue to do this for the next three weeks. Monday through Thursday and on Friday we will have one of our subject matter professionals. Come on. We have a lot of great ones. Or go back into the podcast. Listen to some of our big leaguers on what they did. I remember we had a guy from the New York Yankees, Tanyan Sturts and he used to run every stairs in the stadiums just to get ahead. Nick Kyprios Never drafted and the adversity he went through. Todd Ellick NHL player, LA Kings played behind Wayne Gretzky, never drafted. He was told he's never going to do anything. And we're not here about it's not all about getting drafted. I don't care what level you play. My my goal is as a mindset coach is to make sure you have passion and you love the game because at the end of the day it's a game, it really is. And if you go to the next level, great. If you don't find some kids don't want to and that's fine. My kids did not want to. My kids did not want to play at a high level sports. My daughter did music and theater and I loved watching her. That was her thing. My son loved building computers from the ground up. He played lacrosse in school, sat on the bench as long as I said, hey, if you're going to play one minute, be the best one minute player. But at the end of the day, it's for the betterment of the athletes again. Hartman Academy no.com love to help you.
