I want to thank everybody for listening to the Mike Hartman Show. I'm Mike Hartman, the founder of hartman.academy and the book the Healthy Mindset. It's a workbook for athletes and the workplace athletes. My name is Mike Hartman. I'm a performance coach. I want to thank many of you has been following this show for, for quite a long time. Now. We, we, we're in our third season of this show and we talk about many different things. We talk about stories and mindsets and champions and today we're going to talk about setting goals. Now I talked about goal setting before but I'm going to try to simplify this to the best I can. Whether you're the athlete or the workplace athlete, everybody's talked about goals, goals, goals. I mean I use this old cliche. What happens if you're a soccer player and you take the goals, the goals away like the nets? Well, you have nothing to shoot for, meaning there's no goals. You have to always have a why and something to shoot for. So when you set goals, whether you're an athlete or no matter what you do, it's something that you have to work towards. You have to keep improving. We could write all the great goals down we want but there it has to be organized. The importance of learning what a goal is. And I've talked about this before, you know, goals could be related to something, something that, that you're going to do and you got to categorize your goals. Sometimes we have goals that we call like short term goals, things that are in the very short term and we have to accomplish those. Or sometimes we talk about medium term goals and then we talk about long term goals. I also mentioned the word vision goal and the vision goals. That dream at the end, that's that dream. Like you could I talk about having a vision board and putting in that dream. My, my goal is to play major league baseball, my play college baseball, play high school baseball, whatever your your vision dream is. My vision dream is to own a company. How am I going to do that? That's the goal. That's the long, that's like the big goal. It could take three or five or longer years to to accomplish. But it's important that, that you focus on the, on the short term initially, goals that are measurable. And we're going to talk a little bit about that as well. So when we're talking about goals, like medium term goals, it could take between, you know, sometimes it could take between, you know, a month to accomplish some of these goals. For example is if you're gonna, you know, want to win a, let's say you're doing a race, you're running and within that race your goal is to run a 10k race. But you just, you're just not going to go out and train like a maniac. You want to maybe improve each week by 10 or 15%. You'll set that, that goal, something that's achievable to make sure that you're, that you're going to, to reach that medium term goal. It has to be met. It could be anything. So you know, when we're talking about goals, no matter what it is, you have those medium term goals, that's something that's very achievable. I talk a lot about having those long term goals, which is very important gradually. Those are things that you work over in the course of the long term. Some people view long term goals differently. You know, the long term goal could be to, you know, to really work on things that I'm not good at. That's the long term goal. And how are we going to do that? There has to be action behind those long term goals. You know, developing your skills and working on those skills by developing them. Being a better leader, no matter what it is, I can't, I'm not going to sit here and define your goals because we're all different. Some of us have business goals. But in order to achieve that, you have to have that healthy mindset. And some people say what does that have anything to do with goals? Well, it does. We talked about taking care of your mind, body and how important that is because it's, it's crucial that you take care of yourself. You don't just achieve goals if you're running a race. Sleep is so important. Nutrition is so important. That's all part of the healthy mindset. If you want further more details on that, that's right through our book the Healthy Mindset for Athletes and the Workplace Athlete. So setting goals is so important. It's good like we talked about the assessments before, that you have a baseline and I use things that are, you know, that we look at the goal to be, you know, there's all These acronyms, but I'm sure you've heard of it before. Like, you know, these smart goals that, that you could set the smart methods, like being very specific and what that goal is. Things have to be measurable. Like it can't be all. My goal is to, you know, lose all this weight. My goal. It has to be. There has to be a number to it. I want to lose £30 this month. Well, that's. That's not really. How achievable is that? That may not be achiev. Realistic. So sometimes we have to be really smart in this. In this method. And that's why we call it smart goals. More specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time based. And you break these down and then what happens is that they become attainable. They could happen. And then if. Let's say you. We have setbacks sometimes within. Let's start with the workplace athlete. We're gonna. Everyone says Covid. I'm even. I'm tired of that name. And I'm. I'm sure there's a lot of people that have been through Covid and family members and in a very sad way, as well as other things. But Covid has set many people back. I don't think they planned. It maybe wasn't part of their goals. But you have to plan for adversity happening. And sometimes we get stronger through adversity. I really believe in that as well. But it's very important that you set goals for the future. And sometimes we have to realize that things are going to get in the way of our goals. Felt bad for so many athletes that we're going through the time when some of these high school athletes, that's. You play four years of a sport or even in college or even junior junior hockey or basketball, whatever. Whatever it may be, it's a short time. And we didn't plan on Covid holding us back during that time. Now I'm using Covid again as another example. But we didn't plan on that and it hurt a lot of people. So going back, you have to. Sometimes things get in the way of our goals and that's where you're going to have to become stronger. You're going to have to become a little bit more understanding. You have to change your dream and we have dreams and you're going to keep dreaming big. But we might have to figure out a way to make it attainable, make it more realistic. Okay, now that I can't do these certain things because our goals have been interrupted and things. Life has Been. Sometimes life just gets in the way. So it's important that you stay focused, you stay motivated. You do whatever you can to achieve those goals and you do whatever you can to make it work. And then it's okay to celebrate. Good example is I knew somebody in corporate America and their company just did this amazing thing and I said to one of my clients, boy, I called them the workplace athlete. We're doing all these things like sleeping, eating well, taking care of ourselves, exercising, going for walks, meditation, and they reached the goal. And I said, now it's time to celebrate. You celebrate it? Why not? But what happens is you get right back into it. How many times have you watched the super bowl and I watched Tom Brady. I know you might not be a Brady fan. Maybe you are. I am. I'm a, I'm a sports fan in general. I just love watching highly competitive, elite, world class athletes and the things that they do. And if you look as soon as after the super bowl, they say, okay, what's next? Well, we want to win next year. Wait a sec. You have to celebrate this one. I'm not telling Brady how to celebrate, but that's how those champions think. They're always thinking, okay, we won this one, we're going to win another one. I watched the Stanley cup this year and a few days after the team had their big press conference and then I think they had a parade. And I was so happy for the coach, young coach who was a career minor leaguer. He thanked everybody and celebrated with tears in his eyes. He thanked the organization for sticking by him. Took him six years. And sometimes teams don't stick by their coaches. But what really caught my attention was, you know what? Now we want to win next year. So it's time to enjoy the win. Celebrate your wins, work on your smart goals, work on things that work for you and I promise you good things will happen. Thank you again for listening. If I could help you out in any way. I mention this all the time because I think it's important. We don't advertise on our show purposely, but we do share what we're doing. At Hartman Dodd Academy, we have an accountability program that, that we help people with as long as our, we have our book, Healthy Mindset. It's a workbook for athletes and the workplace athletes and we even lead you through the book if needed. That, that's all part of our accountability program. Thank you again for listening. It really means a lot because without you, we don't have a whole lot. We don't have anybody listening. So. So thank you and have a fantastic rest of your day.
