Mike Hartman uses a junior-hockey story to show how one bad choice can derail a career. College recruiters rank character first, grades second, ability third. The same applies to business: treat employees well and avoid shortcuts.

Welcome back to another episode. We're still on what I call as our little mini courses. And in this section I want to talk about how you're going to make good choices. I don't care if you're the business athlete, which I explained in the last episode that we did, or you're an athlete that competes in sports, you have to choose to make the right choices. Especially it has to come from your heart because one bad choice within business, within your sport can really set you back. And the reason I want to add the business part here because we have a lot of moms and dads that ask me that, hey, can you do some podcasting around business? Well, it's hard to do that. A lot of what we do is the sports. But like I said, we work with the business athlete as well. So making good choices are really important. You have to choose to make a good decision. I'm not going to use names here. I could remember I was playing junior hockey and one of the top rated players that I have ever played with. He was going to be a first round draft pick to the NHL. His choices were horrendous. He would go out, we had a curfew, he would miss curfew, he would get in trouble, he would take shortcuts. He made terrible choices. And what he did is he ended up watching a lot of his fellow teammates and people that he knew and people that he's trained with and played with and go on and play at the highest level where he never got a game in, played a little bit in the minors. He was fortunate just enough to do that. I like to be direct. So the example is he made horrific choices at a young age. He thought he was invincible. He thought, well, I'm not going to get caught. I'm going to sneak the odd drink. So some of you young athletes remember that one bad choice could end everything for you. I tell people, if you're a young athlete, you want to play a college sport. Do you know the first thing a college will ask about a player? You're thinking, what can he play? Can I score? Am I a good baseball player? Can I hit the ball? No. What kind of a person Are you. Do they make good choices? What kind of a person are you? Do you have good character? We want to bring good character into our school. The second part is of course, do they have good grades? Do they have the ability to really study and make good choices in the classroom? And the third thing of course is they could play. So that's just a little example of the athlete. Let's talk about the business athlete. Making good choices at work. Not taking shortcuts Treating your if you're. If you're an owner of a company, you're a CEO, do you choose to treat your employees, co workers with respect? Because that will haunt you later. People are not going to want to work with you. Making good choices in your life will go a long way. Giving back is a good choice. Being real about it. I talked about it in the last podcast where we were talking about our story about being authentic. One thing I'm tired of with the podcast is like blabbing and going on and on and on with things that are insignificant. I decided to make these really short for you to grasp what we're trying to do. These are all going to be up on the website. We have an app as well, Hartman Academy. And what I want you to do is you could listen five good choices that you're going to make on a daily basis that's going to help you succeed. We talk about making good choices within your life. I talked about it earlier. Make sure it's from your heart. Doing all of these things and choosing to make good decisions is going to help you in the long run. I said it again. I'm going to be redundant. Don't take shortcuts. Too many people do. Choose to make good decisions from your heart and good things will happen. Go to Hartman Academy. I want you to list those good choices that you're going to make and we're here to help you and we'll respond to you to help further along your athletic career or the business athlete career.
