This podcast episode from the Mike Hartman Show (Healthy Mindset App Coach AI) explains a quick heuristic for judging character in business and sports: observe how people treat service staff ("you can tell in 30 seconds"). The host shares a mentor's hiring tip—watch how someone treats a waiter/waitress—and a personal Starbucks anecdote where a customer's rude behavior illustrated the point. The episode connects this heuristic to team-building and athlete recruitment, emphasizes character over pure performance, and closes with a call-to-action to visit healthymindsetapp.com for a workbook and more resources.

Welcome back to the Mike Hartman Show. And I've been getting used to doing these podcasts right from my car and boy, I enjoy it here. I'm here, I'm doing them early in the morning. I've said this last time I come to Starbucks here and before I go in, I want to make sure that I'm answering all these questions. This week I'm doing something for the workplace athletes. And as I mentioned last time on the last show that I did, the new website is the healthymindsetapp.com Healthy Mindset App.com is our website and the book that you can get we mentioned this, that we have our book right on the site called the Healthy Mindset. It's a workbook for athletes and the workplace athlete. And today I'm going to share something that, that I, that was given to me. This, I don't call it advice, but I, I, I consider this person a mentor and I would never, never say his name. Let's just say he's a very senior leader at a major company. He had over 650 people that not necessarily reported to him, but let's say he was responsible for, he recently retired. So some of my good friends may know who I'm talking about, but I promise I would not use his name. And I actually worked with him and did some, you know, I did some of the fitness things that we did for years and the work and also the, you know, the work life balance things that I did in my day. But this is a very senior leader. And I was talking to him, we were just talking business and we were sitting down and he said to me that I asked him, how do you, how do you know when somebody's the right fit for your company? How would you know? Because you'd had so many people apply for the job. I'm sure you had everybody's, you know, maybe you worked with said, hey, I want you to, can you, can you take a look? I have a family member that is, that might want to apply in this company, very large company, one of the largest companies in the world. I said, what made you find that special person, that special employee, that special co worker, like what did you look for? And he said to me something that I couldn't believe. He said, you know, I could find something out about somebody in 30 seconds. I go, 30 seconds. I said, well, I use an assessment tool. I have an assessment. I want to see their values and I want to see how they are. He goes, well, that stuff is good, too. But I, I, I. It's very simple for me to, to really get to know somebody. And what I do is, and you could use this within, within your business and, and get to see if it, it may work for you, but if this person's going to be a good fit or fit on his team. He told me this very simple thing. He says, I know that everyone's going to kiss my butt when I'm out for dinner with them or out for lunch, and they're going to kiss my butt and they're going to be nice to me and we're going to talk. But really what I want to see is how do they treat the waitress or waiter? How do they treat people around them? Like I said, they're going to be nice to me. I'm talking in the third person. And I said, ooh, I never looked at it like that. And he's been around people that just aren't very good to the waitress or waiter, like they were talking down on them. And it really resonated with me. And I'll share with you why, I'll tell you this quick story. And I mean, that was something that, you know, it caught my attention. And we just went out yesterday, so we were together yesterday together here in Charlotte. And I love this person. He's to me, one of the finest, nicest, real straight shooter. Oh, he'll tell you how it is right to your face. In fact, I did some work, life balance work for 10 years for him, and I was late once, and he let me have it. It was not a good day, maybe in his office or for the company that he was with. And I didn't even. He might remember this. He may not. I had never been late, but I was on the other side of town. I got caught in traffic, and the one time I was late, he let me have it. But he's really like a true friend. I look at him like a mentor and a best friend. But the story I'm going to share with you that goes along with this is, you know, they had the big golf tournament here not too long ago, and it was like, right. I mean, I live right across the street from the golf course, so the Starbucks That I go to quite a bit is, you know, it was a different one than I'm at right now. But it, it's right by my, it's right next to my house. The reason I go to this other one because it's not as busy. But during the golf tournament they were so backed up and so busy. So I, I ended up going there that day. It was convenient. I didn't feel like driving an extra 10 minutes to go to my other Starbucks. And I go into the Starbucks, it's packed. And I usually get, I like to have it. I have my yogurt, I have a bagel. I know it's not the healthiest thing and I have my coffee and it gives me time to get myself, my rituals going. But that morning they were really behind. I mean, it was taking them a long time. Everybody was in their family member, brother, cousin. I saw all the golf hats on, golf shirts. It was at the Quail Howl Country Club right down the street and it was packed. You couldn't even imagine. It was like almost like a 20 minute wait. And it was frustrating, but it was nobody's fault. And this lady walked in, she walked in front of everybody. First of all, she parked in handicap number one and she looked pretty fit actually. And she walked in almost, she was jogging in to get her coffee and she realized it was going to be a long wait. And then she had the audacity to, to say to the person behind the counter this exactly word for word. She said, you know, what's going on? It's taken forever. Wow. We're just so backed up because we have drive through. We just can't handle all this traffic at once. It's going to be about like 15 minutes. She goes, that's why you do what you do for a living. And I don't usually say anything, but that touched my nerve. She told the lady, the nice girl behind the, the desk now she had this gorgeous Mercedes. And I'm not judging her car. And you know, she one number one. She parked in handicap. And I never, I mean I'm one that I avoid any sort of controversy, drama. I don't like it. It's not me at all. I don't, I avoid it. I don't want it. I don't even like it in my own personal life, let alone this. And I had to say something. I said to the lady, excuse me, what did you just say to this person behind the counter? Just none of your business. That's why they work here. They can't even get their crap together. And I said, this is actually, these people are great people here. They're doing everything they can to get this, to get the orders out. As you know, there's a golf, a national golf tournament right down the street. I mean, you know, sometimes you have to look beyond to see really what's going on. She goes, why don't you mind your own business? And I kind of let it go there. I didn't want to let it go anywhere. But, you know, just after what my friend told me and what to look for, I'm going to start using that even within my business. I want to see how people treat others. And I could tell you that person would never play on one of my teams. If I ran a team, whether if it's in sports or in business or within my company, I don't care how good they were, I don't care how much they could bring to the table. Eventually they're going to be talking to customers like that, clients like that, teammates like that. So I had to mix these two stories together because I believe they went hand in hand. And I just wanted to share that tip with you. It was a great friend that shared that, you know, how he could find somebody within 30 seconds now 30 seconds most of the time. But they have to be qualified. They have to be qualified for the job, of course. But. And I'm going to throw one more thing. That's why I like shooting off the cuff here today. But I tell for the athlete, if you're an athlete, listening. And I worked when I did the development camps for USA Hockey, the 14 camp. I love working with the top 14 year olds in the country. There was 6 of head coaches and I was a head coach. Same thing working with the women's Olympic team. When I did this mentoring type of work I was telling we would do, I would go up and I would be on stage and I would tell the young athletes the first thing. These are young players working their way up to play. They want to play college hockey and a lot of them beyond. And the first thing I would say is, I want you to tell me what does the first thing that a college scout or a college would ask about a player and they would raise their hand and one would say, well, they're gonna ask, you know, you know, do I have good grades? And I'm saying that's, that's, you're pretty close, but let's leave that how many goals that I have last year. And now they want to know, of course, if you could play and I said, I'm gonna tell you what it is. The first thing they want to know was what kind of a person are they? What kind of a person is this person going to bring to our school? The character within a person. And I believe the same thing that goes in sports, that goes in business. So you young athletes, it's being that good person from deep down. And boy, I could talk here for, I could ramble for about another half hour, but this is a topic that really means a lot to me. So maybe you could think about these. You could use these tips. I thought I would throw that out there today. Again, our business is based around stories, mindsets and champions. And I thought it was a good time for this. Again, if anyone wants to go to the healthymindsetapp.com go there. We love that. You know, have you asked some questions? It's that little blue icon at the bottom right corner of the, of the website and you could ask a question and we would love to to answer them for you. Have a great day. And again, I hope this helped you.
