Thank you for listening to the Mike Hartman show and my name is Mike Hartman, the founder of hartman academy no.com and the book called the Healthy Mindset. It's a workbook for athletes and the workplace athletes that could be found on our website at Hartman Academy or it could be found on Amazon. And a lot of what we talk about now going forward is the mental side of sports. Your focus, your enthusiasm, your goals. But today I'm going to talk about mental health. And it's very important that right off the bat, I am not a psychologist. We do coaching. So it's very important that if you are suffering from your mental health that you take those steps and you go further with it. There's, there's different phone numbers you can call. I mean, I could even talk about the national suicide prevention line at 1-800-273-TALK and there's so many other resources that, that you could use as a young athlete, as an older athlete, middle aged athlete, doesn't matter, workplace athlete. It's so important that, that your mental health and some of the things that we talk about in our mental health is, you know, are we experiencing burnout? Do you feel that you're burnt out? I remember at times when, when I retired as an athlete, I felt, you know, I was working, I was working seven days a week. I didn't know how to take that time off and I felt burnt out. I got burnt out at what I was doing because I kept doing the same thing over and over and over. And what happens is you can hit a wall no matter what it is. It's the same as an athlete athletically. You can't over train, you're over training your body. So this does involve, in my opinion, this involves mental health. There's a lot of common obstacles that get in the way of your mental health. Feeling like self doubt, feeling bad about yourself. How many times have you gone into a, to a game or a practice or even into work where you are, where you just don't feel good about who you are. That's your mental health. These have to be addressed. You do have to talk to a professional, consult with your physician, consult with a psychologist, somebody that could help you in these areas. Now we do here at Hartman Academy we focus on your mindset and your mental toughness and a lot of these areas being mindful as an athlete. But, but when your mental health is in the way it has to be addressed, you have to take care of some of these what I call pain points and struggles that you are living with. One thing that I do believe in helps is I do meditation for my own mental health. So I take care of my mental. How does Mike Hartman do it? I'm not advising or giving out any advice to you on how to do this but for me I take care of my mental health by doing some different strategies like some deep breathing practices that I focus in on. I think that's important for me. Meditation, which is actually part of our, in our app that we have. So if anybody wants meditation, I can get it to you. Plus you go back into the previous episodes you'll find we have 12 of them. So look back into July and and we've done about 12 different meditations for you that you could use that may help you relax more for breathing. These are some of the strategies that I use. It's important too that we take care of ourself. Our self care is so important as it involves your mental health, your sleep, your eating. This is going to sound redundant. You've heard this but I'm glad because if I sound like a broken record I doing my job again to read it. If you just tuned in. It's important that by taking care of your mental health that you do talk to a mental health professional, somebody that's like a licensed psychologist, your doctor, a family member if you're struggling with things. I've talked to an athlete recently. Never share names. And I couldn't believe this story and I'm going to share it with you. This is where we're going with this. So I had a young athlete come to me and he's just a really, really good kid. He told me that he was being picked on on his team. He was a freshman and he was playing a varsity on the varsity sports team and he was working hard every day and they were and he was trying and he was one of the better players and this athlete was a darn good player. And one day in his voice I heard him on the phone. I was doing some coaching with him. I said sir, how are you? He goes, not good. My teammates don't like me. They, they cut. I'm not going to tell you what sport it is but let's say they cut his shoelaces. And so, so he was late getting to practice, beginning on the field. And I just felt, just, you know, no one deserves this. That affects your mental health, being bullied, being picked on. It really affects your mental, your mental health. And it just, I was saddened by it. And I asked him, I said, so what did you, did you go to the coach? Yeah. But he kind of laughed. He says, well, I'm a freshman. I just have to put up with it. And you don't have to put up with it. You know, you don't have to put up with it. So for some of our athletes out there being bullied, it's, it's, it's just not right. It doesn't feel good and it's not fair. All you're trying to do is show up, be a good teammate, and just because you work harder than some of the varsity players. And if you're a bully, shame on you. In fact, one of our athletes, Stephan Matteau, is known for scoring one of the biggest goals in Ranger history. Has a program actually that he does in the Bronx right now, all over New York City. About bully. He was bullied. He's 6 foot 4, 240 pounds, and he was a big hockey player. He was bullied as a kid. Told me he was a late bloomer. And, you know, he grew to be a big kid. First round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, later traded, played in different teams, but he was bullied. And now he talks about it, which we have long discussions about it. And people say, really? Gosh, he was a big kid. Doesn't matter. He was bullied. So we, we want to nip this bowling. It's a, I don't want to get too far off track. We're talking more on the, you know, how you know this. You can do certain things as it comes to your mental health. And for you young athletes out there, don't be afraid to speak up. Don't be afraid to share what's on your mind. Don't be afraid to talk to somebody and share this, please do not hold this in because there's many resources for you out there. I mentioned earlier. So what do we do again? If, if you are struggling with, with, with, with things in your life and it's to a point where you just, you can't take it. You, I, I, I, like I said one, if you got to a point where it's gone way too far, you have to talk to a family member ASAP or, or a doctor. It's Something that you have to do it right away because this will affect not only your performance, but your worse year after year. So anybody that need, that needs help here, we love to, to help you again the, you know, please check out some of the things that, that we have. I am promoting our book because I do zero advertising on this podcast. I do, I did not want to get into the advertising part. We are just obviously going to promote our book because we, we know this helps and I'm here to help you through it. And for whatever reason you can't afford the book, reach out to me. How about that? Honestly in your heart, if you cannot afford this, send me a private message. You can email me at the Hartman Academy website. Say, mike, I just can't afford this book. I'll take care of you on it. No matter who you are, no questions asked. I'm going to believe you. Now, if you could afford the book, then that's a different story. But from this episode here, I'm going to leave this for the next, you know, three weeks here. I can't, this can't be something forever. I can't do this forever. But for three weeks from the, from the date of this released episode, I will definitely send you out a book. If you can't afford it, I believe it will help you. We talk a lot about this type of things, the mental toughness and goals. We even talk about, like what we've been talking about today, you know, for your mental health. So I hope everybody's enjoying these episodes. We're going to keep adding these episodes along with stories and I just want to thank you for listening. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have a show. So until next time, have a fantastic day and looking forward to the next episode.
