Now let's dive headfirst into this episode of the Healthy Mindset App podcast. Here's your host, Mike Hartman.
Managing energy is essential for maintaining productivity, focus and overall well being. Here are some ways that I'm going to share with you on how to manage your energy. And one thing I always knew as an athlete that I always had to prioritize my task. I had to identify what was most important for me to maintain that energy. And the same thing in my coaching business. I had to prioritize, okay, what is the most important? What is the highest priority task during this week that I need to do just to keep my peak energy up and save a lot of time by wasting energy by doing other things? So prioritize what's most important to you. The second thing is that set boundaries for yourself. Establish clear boundaries to protect your energy levels. I know as a coach for me, I used to do so many strategy calls many years ago. I've done this coaching for almost 17 years now. I remember at a time I was taking on five or six calls a day in the beginning, just trying to get my business out. We're talking like many years ago. And what I did was I didn't set enough boundaries. So I was doing these calls. They were supposed to be for 20 minutes and they were for an hour long. So one thing I could share with you, if you're an athlete, a workplace athlete, set boundaries. The next thing is practice mindfulness. And you've heard me say that so many times. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your life. That's what we do with the healthy mindsetapp.com we would love to help you in any way there because that's a big part of what we do is we help with giving you meditations, we talk about deep breathing exercises. We believe in even taking a walk and adding different things to your routine so you could be on your game and you can manage that energy. Take regular breaks. You know, for me it's important even throughout the day to take a break. What could happen is if you don't take breaks, before you know it, you could experience burnout. I was talking to an athlete the other day they tell me that their season just ended. I don't want to go into the sport, but their season just ended and they're not taking any time off. You still need time off. You have to have that recovery which is so important. You have to take breaks, even little breaks in the afternoon. With the workplace athlete, and especially the athlete, you have to recharge and rejuvenate. You need that recovery. And there's so many things you could do as well. That doesn't mean do nothing, but you could do walking. You could do different things like some stretching and just doing light stretches, but take regular breaks. Whether you're the athlete or workplace athlete, it's extremely important. Another thing is manage your stress. Chronic stress can deplete your energy reserves. We've talked about this so many times. We do say manage your energy, but if you're not taking care of your stress, it's going to set you back. So do some relaxation techniques that will provide for you. We do some time management skills. We do little things and support you in your everyday life because we know it's important. What we also think is extremely important is get some sleep. For me, if I'm not sleeping seven to nine hours a night, I'm not going to be on my game the next day. So if you're an athlete, if a workplace athlete, you have to relax at bedtime. That's not the time to look at your emails or start watching sport videos. That's the time where you need your sleep. I remember at one time when I was living in Canada with my billets and I grew up, I. I didn't have a TV in my room until I think I was about 15. But then I moved away to Canada to play hockey and I thought it was okay to have a TV in my room. It's the first thing my billets did is they took the TV out of my room. And I didn't understand it then, but I understand it later in life and how important that is. The bedroom is for sleeping. Making sure you're properly fueling your body. That's the next thing I want to talk about. Eat meals that are good for you. Your body's like a machine and not properly fueled. It will break down. So you need that energy throughout the day. It's so important that you do that. We do have a dietitian, right in our community that could guide you. We have a lot of handouts that. Her name is Cheryl Buckley, our dietitian. She can give to you just to help you because if you don't take care of yourself, you're going to feel it. If you're eating sugary foods and snacks and, and lots of caffeine, it could lead to energy crashes. Another thing is to stay hydrated. Dehydration could lead to, you know, fatigue and decreased cognitive function. So it's very important that you stay hydrated. I remember as an athlete when we used to travel a lot or even going across country, even having two hour flights, even if we were going from, well, if you're going from New York to la, we, we always had to stay hydrate. You have to stay hydrated throughout the afternoon. So that's super important. Well, because you don't want that to take your energy away. So it's so important that you stay hydrated. One of my favorite things is, because I've been doing it for so long is you have to engage in physical activity. You have to exercise. Whether if it's just walking or a training program that you're on, it could be any type of exercise that you like. I know people love yoga, people do play sports and that's a form of exercising. But aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days a week. Now my athletes here and I have some professional and elite athletes, it's a different schedule because you're or even our world class athletes, you have to have a different type of set of rules for you and I understand that. But overall it's important for all of us to really aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise. You try to do it, at least for me, I try to do it six days a week with one day recovery. And even on that day recovery I find myself stretching. And the last thing I'm going to talk about is I said this so many times because I've learned this personally, cultivate positive relationships. So you make sure you surround yourself with supportive people, individuals who will uplift your energy. There are people out there that will steal that energy from you. I will never say names. I was working with an athlete and somebody kept telling this athlete, you're never going to make it, you're never going to play at this college sport. You're not good enough, you're too small. And really what it was doing is it was really not a positive relationship. And I've always even told my kids that life is built on relationships and you have to foster these connections that bring you joy and fulfillment in your life. And I personally have some of the best relationships with some even former teammates and friends and people that I, that I meet all the time. And I enjoy meeting people, but there's also people that want to bring you down and there are jealous people out there. So try to disengage as much as possible with them. And that's I'm going on about this because to me it's super important that life is built on relationships. We can help you in any way. You know. Please go to healthymindsetapp.com and within our community we have so many different things. We believe that healthy mindset is extremely important and we recognize the connection between the mind and body and how important that is. And we do have a self paced online program and we first want to help you and we give you an assessment. So if you are an athlete, world class athlete, weekend warrior, high school athlete, we give you the Ready to Play and Total Wellness assessment. And if you're the workplace professional, we give you the Change Readiness and Total Wellness assessment. And these assessments are pivotal in understanding your current mindset and values of where you are now, where you need to be and how are you going to get there. The next thing is we believe in educating. So we immerse you in this transformational program that we have. We get you to first start by taking our audio elearning course that has 14 crafted educational lessons and then we guide you through our community that has Q and A, that has accountability coaching and we're there for you, we're there to support you and it's being around a lot of like minded people. And the last thing we do is we want to self coach, meaning we want to teach you how to take this and what you've learned and you go on your own. So self coaching approach invites you to tailor the process to your unique needs and preferences, emphasizing resilience, pursuit and it sets you up for what we call as our smart goals. You may have heard them, but we have a different approach to this as well as we have over 300 self coaching tools and resources for you and on top of we have 25 personal development audio classes for you, accountability, coaching, group coaching, meditation, walking, meditation, guided meditation, goals meditation, gratitude, meditation, visualization, all of these things to help you become more self aware and it will help you in your personal growth. So I love this program we have. We're getting more and more people. I'm just so excited to bring this out. If we could help you in any way, please reach out to us. Until then, bye for now.
