Welcome back to another episode. Today we're going to get into a little short story again. I love telling stories. I've been known for telling stories. It's something I love to do. It's probably why I named the podcast stories Mindset and Champions. But I'm going to share a little baseball story with you. Talk about Trevor Hoffman. You can go to Wikipedia and learn more about him. But one of the best closers in baseball. He actually played for the University of Arizona initially and played short shortstop. But my, it was funny. Last week my father sent me a picture and he said, do you know this person? And kind of funny. And I said, of course I know him. It's Trevor Hoffman. He goes, I know I've been sitting next to him for four hours on the plane. And I, I feel bad for Trevor as much as I love my daddy probably, you know, Trevor probably wanted to get some sleep. They were going from San Diego, where my father lived. My father was going on to Tennessee. He was going to Atlanta. And my father was talking to him. And people started, you know, my father struck up a conversation with him. He was actually, they were sitting in first class and people were walking by and saying, hello, Trevor. You know, hello, Trevor. He was actually the face of the, of the Padres for many years, 18 years of pro baseball, I think 15 with the Padres. And people kept saying hello to him. So my father said, okay, who are you? You must be an athlete. He goes, Well, I played 18 years in the majors. My name is Trevor Hoff. And my father says, oh, wow. You know, they're talking about sports. And I guess my father, you know, probably mentioned my name and he laughed. He goes, of course I know Mike. I used to hang out with Mike. We trained together. In fact, Trevor's wife now is Tracy. They've been married for many years. She was in my wedding to my former wife Lauren, and then Lauren was in their wedding. I became good friends with Trevor. I don't know how much good friends. We haven't talked in many years, but at that time, and he used to train. We're talking about mindful. He was so mindful of things. He would focus. He was one of the Most focused individuals I have ever met in my life. I mean, when I mean focus. He would get up early. He had a routine. And the one thing I want to share with you about him, again, this is a very short story, but it's one of my favorites, is that he told me that he was a shortstop and that he was drafted really late, I think by the Cincinnati Reds. We actually had Leland Maddox from the Cincinnati Reds on the show. I've never talked about Trevor that much with Leland. Leland was the assistant gm, if you listen to one of our previous episodes, and he was a shortstop, but somehow, you know, he. He had a pitch. I don't know if he pitched for fun in high school, but he ended up making it as a pitcher. I think he was warming up and next thing you know, I think he was playing aaa. And I think he told me back then that he was a couple days away from packing it in and quitting. And sometimes we use the word quit. That doesn't mean they're just a quitter. Sometimes we get to a point where it's time to move on. No matter what it is. You're not a quitter, but you get frustrated. You realize, okay, you're in the minors, there's no chance for you to move up. Can you imagine being drafted by the New York Yankees and you're a shortstop back in the day and they had Jeter. Where are you going to play? You hope the Yankees trade you or they just keep you in the minors. You know, now we're getting off track a little bit, but there's so many good players in hockey that's in the minor leagues, baseball. Like, there's so many great players and you need a break. You need a break. You have to have your mind set in the right place. Everybody throws that word around. So much mindset, but it's true. You have to have that mindset in a place to say, okay, I'm going to do it. So I believe he was working out and training and I guess he just. He could throw. Trevor was throwing the ball 100 plus miles an hour back then and started pitching. Next thing you know, the pitching coaches started to work with him and he became a great closer. But prior to that, this is something that he told me and this is something that you could think about in your life. This is the purpose of these podcasts. I could tell sport stories, I could have another 50 athletes on, but we had athletes on the beginning. We don't really want to do it now as much, but I want you to Take this with you. So the one thing Trevor did was he told me, he said, you know, it's great to have goals. I train like a maniac. I stay in great shape, which he was unbelievable shape back then. I'm focused, I'm determined, I study the game. But the one thing I'm going to do is I take my glove home with me every night and I'm going to sleep with my glove until I get called up to the big leagues. Now, something I wish I knew at the time when my father sent me that picture with them on the plane, I said, I asked, I was going to joke and say, ask him if he still sleeps with his gloves. But he slept with his glove. And that was something that he did. You know, he had his glove. I don't know if he slept next to it and cuddled with it like I cuddle with my little dog, Puffins, but it's funny. And that's something that he used to help him. We still call that, if that helps your mindset to get in a great place, fine. We sometimes we do, in sports, we do whatever works for you, like what works best for you. And we're going to get more into mindset work within the next couple weeks. Just want to mention that I am coming out with two books, one for the athlete and one for the workplace athlete. And we would love to have you check out our book. I'll give you more information on that. You know, we have a lot of listeners and I get a lot of emails and they say, well, Mike, the first topic of your, of the title of the Mike Hartman show is stories. Can you please share more stories? So, yes, we're going to share stories, more and more stories. And please take a look at this book. I think it could help you. And then we, we love to help you as well. We have programs that direct you right to our site. So in the book, we have like a 50% off on all our programs. So if you're committed to the book, we love that. And if you could leave a review, that would be great. Hopefully it's a positive one. We want to be a positive influence in, in your life. But again, just think about what can you do that's going to help you. And athletes would do these crazy things. You hear sometimes the athlete, we call these little rituals that, okay, they're going to wear the same shirt every, you know, that they had underneath their equipment. Maybe they, of course they're going to wash it, but they're, they're, there's, they're Superstitious, getting off track again, which I. I have sometimes I do because I get. I get excited to share stories, but I remember one story I. I was playing with Dave Anderchuk, and it kind of relates to this. And, And Dave had a way of. I live with Dave. One of the guys, unbelievable hockey player. Guy was, like, strong, fantastic. I actually live with Dave in his house. But I remember when I was a rookie and I got called up the second time around. I played my first year, then this. I got. Went back to junior. Then my second year, I got called up, and actually that same season, I got called up for three more games and I actually took his tape. I thought I stole, like, his wallet and all this money. He looked at me, goes, don't ever do that again. I said, what did I do? He goes, you don't touch my tape. Okay? You see this tape here? He goes, I can't believe you touched the tape. And I'm making fun of Dave now. Love him, but it was funny, man. I just touched his tape. I'm a young guy. I didn't know. But we have these little things that we could do. What can you do that could help you? Is there anything that. That you could do, you know, within something? I, you know, if you're. If you're. If you're an athlete, what, what can you do? Bringing good energy in and you. And let's say it's a great game and you want to continuously bring that good energy in. That's something that we talk about. Energy. There's just many different things. You could reach out to us as well, and we could help you with things as well. So, like, part of one of our programs is you get this assessment, and we assess where you are. The second part is that we, you know, you use our workbook. We go through your workbook. And the third part is an app where we coach you through the app for 90 days, and we'll give you tips on some of these things that may help you either as an athlete or in the workplace. Athlete. Well, I hope you enjoy the show. Looking forward to sharing more stories with you. Got a lot of good things coming down the pike. And until now, have a fantastic rest of your day.
