A short interview-style YouTube video by Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim in which the host and a guest discuss the guest's early and long-term work in hospitality (starting at age 13 as a cleaner, later pubs, shops, restaurants, festivals) and themes of judgment about barista/hospitality work and burnout/career transitions.
Do you have like any pushback? Family, friends or even colleagues?
Yeah, to be fair, even now when I tell people that I'm a barista, like, I do get a bit of judgment and I think that is unfortunately like a downside of, of the job. But so I started working. I started working at 13, which is technically illegal, but that was my first job and I was a cleaner. And then after.
That, wow.
I worked in like pubs and shops and restaurants and festival and I worked all the way pretty much until the end of uni in hospitality. So I was working in hospitality for like nine, ten years.
Wow.
And then went into medicine and then after being incredibly burnt out in Australia, I had to come home because I couldn't work anymore and I had to take like a big chunk of time off. So I took like five, six months off work to try and recuperate in and feel better in myself.
