A short conversational excerpt from a YouTube interview titled "From Doctor to Cereal Entrepreneur" (host: Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim) in which a former doctor describes leaving a medical partnership to start a granola/cereal brand. The speaker recounts early commercial success (Amazon interest, national distribution), resistance from partners, and a personal motivation rooted in proving a teacher wrong.
So I created an amazing product, an amazing brand with great potential. Amazon wanted to stock it. I was stocking it all over the country. Brilliant product. Everyone wanted more of it.
I can't imagine how hard must have been running the granola business. It must have been like trying to push a rock up a hill. It would just be fueled by your passion, your energy.
I think it was passion energy, because when I was leaving the partnership, which was a really difficult decision, one of the partners that was retiring basically came into my room and said, you're making a massive mistake. Like, you're a great doctor, you're a great partner. This is the best partnership you could possibly have. And go and make breakfast cereal. Like, what the hell are you doing?
From doctor to breakfast cereal maker.
Essentially, I did medicine because somebody told me I couldn't. So I went to my chemistry teacher. I said to him, I'm going to do medicine. And he kind of fell about laughing and said, that's never going to happen.
